Launched out of FBC Huntington Harbor at 6:45 and opted to head to Catalina rather than drive around looking for bluefin found thousands of birds mid-channel eating small 2-3" chovies on the way to the East End. metered some fish but no boils or breaking fish. could only snag large macs on small anchovy jigs.

Hit the island just above Frog Rock and trolled that zone down to the casino Point MPA for nothing. metered some fish here and there over the usual spots but no biters. ran down past Avalon and trolled the East End around past Church Rock for nothing. metered better marks near the Quarry and continued to troll back up that way.

Caught several 3lb bonito right in front of the quarry crane after the tug pulled the 2 barges over to the Huntington harbor project.

Metered lots of fish all around the east end. And, metered tons of bait. The bones were caught over scattered bait.

Ride over in the morning was sloppy choppy with mixed Seas and wind against swell, 7am whitecaps, but was absolutely gorgeous at the island and we were Full Throttle on the way back until we hit the shelf and normal afternoon local winds.

Couldn't find anything in their bellies so not sure what they're foraging on but they ate the xrap 10s.

Fresh pelagic poke, sashimi, and jalapeno poppers were delicious...not much different than yellowfin when bled and iced immediately!

We'll take it for February!

That frigg'n poke stack looks out of this world. I'm clearly doing something wrong.

Thanks for the report. Catalina is just itching to bust open as she normally does.

Nice report Doug!! Heading to Cat 02/29. This is useful info. Did you see or hear the Carnage having squid by chance?

The poppers and poke look delicious!!

"Poppers and Poke" sounds like something fun to do back in the 80's.

Damn..... you guys are smart. Like the guy on the bait barge. ....find out who and what. You won't believe how many of those commercial guys will help you out....or work with you.... If you "call them in" a few times, when you find squid. "Full circle". Commercial "stick boats" too.

THOSE "CONNECTs" are priceless! Sometimes it takes years to establish.... but time we'll spent...I think!!

Thx. It was! I don't use recipies, but it was something like:

Diced jalapeno, spring onion, cilantro and avocado
Smoked sea salt, cracked black pepper, dash of sesame oil, small squirt of sriracha mayo and a dab of wasabi. Fold together with cubed very cold bonito and 5-6 costco seaweed crackers. Coat the inside of a ramekin with sesame oil and wipe clean so not too oily. Back poke in ramekin til firmly packed. Put in freezer for 10-15 minutes. Run a knife around inside edge of ramekin. Invert on a large spatula and tap ramekin. Remove ramekin by twisting while lifting. Use knife to slide off spatula onto avocado puree (avo+lime juice+blender) and garnish with cilantro, eel sauce and sesame seeds.

The margherita sashimi was just as delicious...bonito marinated for 10 minutes in lemon & lime juice and tequila and salt and pepper plated on avo puree with jalapeno, cilantro smoked sea salt, cracked pepper and a touch of lime juice.

I did not see any squid boats at all. I heard nacho was out of sardines but has squid but we opted not to buy any bait. Based on what i saw on the meter on the east end and back side, i will buy squid or take fresh frozen with me next time

Man... you should do a cooking show or write a cookbook with pictures. I'm craving sushi! Bonita can be pretty tasty when treated right.

Bleed it out quick.... and put on ice immediately. It also is excellent smoked properly.... blood line removed. As kids.... All we could catch from the pier.
Didn't taste great tuna BFT / YFT smoked until TUNASLAM showed me. Thank you Brother!

Great report! Bonita is a such a tasty fish. Perfect for private boaters like us bc you have to bleed it and ice it well immediately. Just goes to show that you don't have to have glamorous fish to make great food! Pics look awesome!

Yup! I rip a couple of gills on each side as soon as it comes out of the water. I hold it head down grabbing it by the tail and run my raw water hose on full blast mode alternating gills until it flushes clean. it goes instantly in the Ice chest. comes out sashimi grade and the color is always very light compared to tuna. it is absolutely delicious raw, smoked, fried, however i cook it. Vac seals well that way too.

Today I smoked the collars and a couple of fillets and made lettuce wraps out of it. Smoked it at 180 for 25 minutes after coating it with old bay, then honey. Put a little corn aioli (pureed corn and mayonnaise...you can jack it up however you like) in the bottom of a butter lettuce leaf, top with a chunk of smoked collar, belly or filet, then hit it with some Sriracha mayo and top it with fried onions...my go to move...

Squid was all over on the front side. I was there for 3 days and each day the volume was getting better. Here are pictures from the front side west end. Having a back up plan is always good. On return Monday, Nacho was out of all bait...both squid and sardines...completely empty. I have never seen that before.

I posted a similar question in the offshore forum...but it got derailed. Has anyone tried the Shimano SP-Orca Baby? It is 90mm and 42g, so should match the anchovies perfectly. Hook looks good too.

Ive got a few, havent used them yet, also have a few laser minnows rigged up. never hurts, my thought is that when they are dialed in and actively feeding they will hit anything similar to the "hatch" thats why the cut bait was a ringer a few years back, it looks like wounded chovie falling. and same with flat falls ect. ect.
