Knew the weather wasn’t going to be ideal but opted to go anyhow. Suited up in full Deadliest Catch orange Grundens and hit the Mission Bay harbor mouth by 5:20. Macs aplenty and had 20 small ones with a few big ones mixed in.

Worked La Jolla for a few hours on the dropper loop and yo-yo to no avail. Drift was fast and lines were hard to get down fast enough even with 16 oz weight. Looked at my rockfish waypoints and decided 20 miles was doable. About 10 miles in I wasn’t sure it was a good idea. Continued on and found my spot.

Even with a fast drift the spot produced exceptionally. Didn’t take long to have what I came for, with a final sanddab (or was that a 40# Halibut?) for good measure. Forgot my fresh squid but had a long dead bonito that the reds couldn’t get enough of. Thick skin and a little meat, the same chunks caught all the fish. I didn’t have to change bait at all. Nothing caught on the live mini macs.

Ride home was equally wet and wild. Picked up one big old Mylar balloon. Back to the ramp by 1:30 exhausted and caked in salt. Gutted and scaled and called it a day.

Checked by DFW at the ramp. Was satisfied with Mexican licenses. Didn’t care to see chart plotter. Did suggest next time we fill out the import report (said he isn’t a stickler for it, but some guys are).

In the past I would filet but I’ll be damned if filleting rockfish isn’t a pain in the ass, wasted meat and occasionally dangerous (those spines are mean!!).

Recently bought a Traeger and found this super easy recipe that turns out amazing. So now I just gut, scale and as of last night, trim off the dorsal, anal and pectoral fins (those have the sharpest spikes). If I’m bored I even cut off the spikes on the gill plate.

The only thing I like less than filleting rockfish, are cats.
