Spent the winter considering a 45’ sailing cat... slow, but what a world they open up.

Arrived here in Panama last night and there is one down here, talked with the owners this morning. Very deep keel, they are going on their 12th year cruising this thing.... 120 HP, chugging along, they go for 22 days before needing fuel.... Not all are used for decorating docks..... After our last few fuel bills, I wish I had one of these!

Badass boats for sure. If we came into stupid money, we’d go with the Nordhavn 55. Seaworthy, economical, and comfortable on the water.

Yes, they are slow- but after a decade plus living on and cruising trawlers, it’s pretty damn nice to head somewhere and not feel beat up after a day long run.

It’s just a change of mindset. I do like the idea of heading offshore a couple of hundred miles to fish, and at the end of the day not worry about rushing back to port- just take a shower, fire up the BBQ, and enjoy the evening.

Talked a little more with the guy this morning, his 45’ boat weighs in at 85k! Holy shit! He has 7k of lead ballast in his keel..... those who are concerned with the amount of boat above the waterline must understand the engineering and design that went into these boats! Pretty amazing! There’s two others down here as well.... obviously a popular boat for cruisers....

By way of comparison, our 52' boat (57' LOA) hit the scales at just a hair under 70k lbs at last haulout!

PAE (Pacific Asian Enterprises) does a great job designing and manufacturing the Nordhavn line.

And that’s heavy for a 52’..... many 52’ Boats are only 50K lbs.....Depending on the style... The 53’ Hatteras Sportfish Convertable that we just bought weighed in at 61K without fuel, water, and equipment. Loaded we push just of 70K lbs and Hatteras is one of the heavy weights!

Of course a cruiser style weighs more as they have more fuel, space, water and state rooms to cover.
