Awesome little boat. Word to the wise on these old boats is the prep work will be key on filling in those old holes. Otherwise the gel coat will look great for a year then halo all over the place once it goes through a couple expand/contract cycles.

You replacing all the thru hulls as well?

My filled holes did just that. All my carefully color matched gel coat cracked around every filled hole.

These boats take an amazing amount of labor to make good again.

Been there done that, its so much fun! Uses a black plastic puddy knife to scrape the bottom paint (HF). Use the paint/lacquer stripper the one in the gold can from HD. Don't get any of it on you! Use heavy gloves! Eye protection! When you get done, you will not do it again! That stuff will strip paint, skin, and gel coat! Don't let it dry on you.

Now go back and replace the thru holes!

Concur. I’m refitting my 16’ nauset and replaced the brass drain tubes with glass tubes......never have to screw with em again.

You glass them over or use actual glass tubes. If you used the glass tubes what did you use?

Replacing thru hulls is just about mandatory on these builds. Easy and cheap insurance to make sure you won't have tiny continuous water intrusion.

I ordered fiberglass tubes from McMaster Carr. On the install I puttied (cabosil and resin) the glass tubes in and then glassed over the ends so it’s all flush.

Hmm, maybe I should consider glas tubes too. Although I already bought the flaring tool for the brass tubes.

Thanks, I didn't know they made glass tubes. I already have the brass ones but good to know for next project.

I have done both. On the boat I replace the drain with brass. For the outrage, I made glass ones from scratch. My thought is that is the best way to get the right size. Install them with thick epoxy. If you are not going to paint it, I would use brass with the gel-coat. If you are going to paint it them there is no reason not to go with glass.
