Went on a friend's boat to rock fish at SCI Friday. Left Dana Point at 0400. Ride was a little bumpy, wind and whitecaps out of the north all the way. Fished a couple of spots and limited out on some real cows. Played around in different areas to c&r a bunch of bass, bonito and sheep head. The run back was a lot nicer and watched a beautiful sunset as we pulled into the harbor. The fish bit dead sardines and squid. Saw a bunch of big dolphin with larger than normal dorsal fins, I was too busy winding up fish to take pictures, anyone know of some unusual dolphins in the area?

You realize those 3 larger ones are actual Cow Cod that are a protected species and may not be taken.

    Thanks for the report.

For reference, this is a cow cod, from pictures taken by our own members:

This is a vermillion rock fish - "red":

Cow cod have distinctive spines and are usually orange looking with three dark lines. Vermillion rock fish have black scratch all over the top of their body.

The big fish in the picture all look like vermillion rock fish to me.

    Wrong...

You better bone up on your rockfish species The DFW website has nice color charts on ground fish and shelf rockfish you can look at.

That is because they deleted the pictures on the post. You are ALL correct that the new picture are just great quality reds and such. But, if you didn't see the first pictures posted you would not understand.
