Dr Bob and I went bassing today in my sled. Launched later than usual so we could see the lobster buoys out of HH. Good God there are a lot! ...and near Nacho too.

We hit spots in the middle shoe pretty hard. 60-80’ only produced 10 or so sand bass. Once we got to around 100’, we found calicos (at least half legal) in the column and it was a flurry here and there—most on the drop. Kinda slow for us overall though.

Totals: 48 bass 70/30 calico/sandy. Calicos to almost 4#, sandies to almost 3. Silver tube baits kept up with Kman Specials, but they don’t last very long and dang they are expensive, especially since my baits are free when I’m fishing with you. We also got calicos on Snipers, Sniper clones and spoons. Big mackerel were a nuisance, bloodying my sled several times. Damn tomato cans. No bycatch at all today. We could have caught more fish with a spot lock trolling motor, but mine is off (along with the heavy batteries) to lighten the boat for tuna fishing—which I think is done.

Wind was as advertised (almost none), and we could not discern a current. You could run any direction at any speed most of the day.

We ended the day at Izor’s, which was DEAD.

Oh the rain. We had a wicked sunrise, but when you looked southeast, there was this short thunderhead with visible rain coming from it. It rained on us briefly. WTF?

Anyways, we didn’t sink the boat or get arrested or towed. It was a great day on the water with very good company.

If I was going to fish tomorrow, I would bounce from rock to rock in 100’ of water till you find hungry, suspended bass, and enjoy getting bit on the drop.

See ya.

You forgot to mention all tackle lost to rocks and kelp yesterday. I lost at least a dozen leadheads/lures, and those expensive(but effective!) Hookup tube baits only last a couple bass before they are shredded. At least they now sell replacement tubes, but still at $3 each. You probably lost more due to the double rig. But we did prove that there is kelp at 80'!

Lots of time spent retying. I've got to find a quicker braid-to-flouro knot.

Thanks for a great day!

We were both paying our dues to the fish gods that day. Man we went through a lot of gear.

A good way to almost guarantee a break off at the hook is to tie a perfection loop at the hook and something like a SD jam knot at the swivel. The hook end knot breaks first 90% of the time.

I swear that if I ever get back down there, and get a chance to fish with you, I will bring plenty of plastic, and jigheads ;-) That was all I fished when I lived down there. The only time I made an exception is if we were drifting for flatties with anchovies, or we had live squid.

Very nice. Tuna fishing was/is not done though. It was wide open that same day not far from where you were fishing.

Jonathan: I meant tuna fishing for us mere mortals was done. Or tuna fishing on my sled was done. I’m happy to ho on tuna trips.

Will someone please put a GPS tracker on Jonathan’s rig?
