Alarm went off at 2am, Nerlie and I head down to the Kai'Nana ready to try our luck with the Akule. After some minor GPS issue (had to lube up all the connectors) pushed off, right outside the harbor we set up. Good steady bite, almost filled a bucket in an hour; 95% were halalu, still grind just fine.

Ran out to R but it was inundated with jiggers, so said screw that and ran out to just beyond the 1000. Headed west from there, no signs of life other than some scattered birds, after a couple of hours thought about heading towards the middle, so made a left turn. See a Ko'olina boat heading towards us, then notced he turned out, scoped the horizon and saw some whites, oh boy!!!

Nerlie was down below, so went down let her know about the birds, got everything ready, got back up in the tower. Sure enough, porpoise and they are active with plenty birds. We are probably 1/4 mile ahead of the other boat, so I'm pretty pumped, sometimes its the first boat and first boat only that gets the bite.

Just as we got in them the stbd corner went, Nerlie runs the boat like a champ, the crew (me) gets lines cleared, battle gear on and get down to the labor of love.

Not a difficult fish, get him to the boat Nerlie helps out we get our ahi on the deck.

Look over and see the other boat stopped, interesting how the coconut wireless works on the water, by the time we were set back up, there were about 10 boats in the pile.

Make another pass, the stbd corner goes, get down on the deck and it comes off but then the port corner goes, this sticks, same drill, this one has some shoulders but still not too tough. Nerlie helps out, this time she is impressed when we pull this one thru the door.

About an hour later the port rigger goes then comes off. We don't have an endless supply of ice so decide to head the Kai'Nana towards the barn, about 45 minutes later the stbd corner goes, a good marlin takes off, after dumping about half spool she breaks line, my bad, not sure what happened.

We secure the Kai'Nana and give our thanks.

Thanks Nerlie for a great day on the water.

    Aloha

Pat and Nerlie, good job on the ahis and halalu! Sorry to hear about the others the didn"t stick and the marlin breaking off but lots of action and lots of fresh fish for sure. Did the marlin happen to break off on the shimano that you had problems with the drag plate a couple months ago?

The sickles on that bigger model are incredible. Congrats on a successful day on the water.

Obviously the title should have read Halalu and beyond...

Thanks Robert, equipments good, JSI's worked well when we found the otarus a few months ago, haven't been bit lately.

    Thanks Brian.

Thanks Darren, it was on a shimano but not the one I had an issue with awhile back. As far as breaking line, I am perplexed over this issue and probably worth another thread in and of itself.

Thanks Kyle, interesting how some of the ahis grow monster sickles and others not so much. I've caught some almost thought were Big Eyes.

    Thanks Steven.

Thanks Dean, as far as stand up, just make sure you get the right belt and harness then its OK, if not, pretty tough.

    Thanks Paul.

Thanks Jonny, we sure feel very lucky and Blessed.

    Thanks Brandon.

Thanks Jimmy, stand up is a hoot.

    Thanks Donald.

    Thanks Robert, lucky we were.

Yep, same lure (moved it from stbd to port corner after the first fish), same lure manufacturer as the fish I caught last week and broke off 3 weeks ago.

    Much Mahalos and Aloha,
    Pat
