I'm on the Phenix rods 10 day trip Sept 28 - Oct 8, 2014. From what I've read
for that time of year, a boat could run into some bigger size fish compared to
a summer time trip. My two largest rigs are a 30VSX and 50VSX on Calstar's
760H and 7460H. If I was going on a cow trip I wouldn't hesitate sending the
reels to Cal's for hotrodding. For this 10 day trip, do I really need to have these
reels hotrodded? They will probably stay in the rack, but I'd rather have them with
me vs not having them and crying the blues wishin I did.

In my dreams!
The VSX are good to go right out of the box----and likely to be overkill for a trip in that time-frame, except as a trolling rig for wahoo.

you may need those rigs on the 10 day but you dont need to hotrod em to fish cows. as stated above they are good to go out of the box and could handle the job no problem.

Use the 50 for a trolling outfit and string up the 30 with a 25' topshot of 100 lb Seaguar Premier. Keep it in the rack, rigged and ready to fish. Ya just never know. Sometimes that trip time frame fishes Alijos and there are some 100+ lb Yellowfin there sometimes. We go 'em there in early October '05. Kite fish, 135. That's a "Stone" off my right thigh. ;)
