I was on the pier last night doing a little a hooping and discovered some people poaching lobster!!!! I waited until they had about 3-4 shorts in the bucket and then sprung into action...I called the hotline and reported the violation. After about 2.5 hours nothing was happening except more shorts in the bucket. So I had my buddy call so there would be two calls for the violation.

After 3.5 hours we left feeling depressed that no one was going to show. On the way home I receive a call from the WARDEN he stated he was in route!!!! I asked for a follow-up phone call on the result but did not get a call back:finger:

This morning I called the WARDEN on his personal cell and asked what happened, he stated that he watched them until 3 or 4am before he bent them over and stuck it in balls deep.

    HERE ARE THE RESULTS:

    4 POACHERS
    +6 HOOP NETS
    +1 BUCKET
    +9 SHORT LOBSTERS
    +2 CALLS TO 1-888-DFG-CALTIP
    -----------------------------------
    = $7200 IN FINES AND 4 :hali_parkutuli: POACHERS

Nice job. It's lawful fishermen and hunters that protect our resources.

Ironically, that's why wardens refer to MPAs as "marine poaching areas"- when you kick everyone out, there's no good guys to turn in the bad guys. Only bad guys.

As soon as those guys showed up in knew they were going to keep everything they caught.. especially after they were acting all shady when they pulled in their first extremely short lobster and put it in their bucket. The part that pisses me off the most is the fact that they had guages to execute legal take and didn't use them at all. I am not a "snitch", However I am a avid fisherman that would like to keep the right to fish and LEGALLY hoop for crab and lobster. After talking to several friends that are CAL DFG and taking tips from them on how to help protect our resources from A**HOLES like this and using the CALTIP hotline and see it works, makes me feel like if every real legal fishman helped we can make a dent in the ILLEGAL poaching of our land, sea, and air resources.

    Fish on!

Thank you for making that call.......how long would that go on and how many shorts would have been taken night after night if they weren't cited........

Good on helping catch the poachers. We need to be vigilant on poacing so that the powers that be don't use them as a reason to deny access to the rest of us.

And it's not the DFG anymore. Our governor has officially changed the name to the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Me thinks that is a precurser to the direction the state is going to take that department. Enviro control.

I understand they have limited resources, but a shorter response time would help tremendously, as most poachers dont stay very long.

I still think some sort of Volunteer patrol for piers and shore lines could be part of a solution for these activities. San Diego has what they call the RSVP (Retired Seniors Volunteer Patrol) program. A city program where volunteers working with the police department patrol neighborhoods and report problems etc. It should be possible to have the same thing with piers and shores. I think the poaching would drop way off if there were more eyes out there and with a patrol or two up and down piers a few night every week.

They cruise the pier here in SM.

Michelle Budish who is one of the local Agents told me some crazy stories. A lot of the people poaching on the piers have "look outs" at the beginning of the pier. If they see a DFG Agent they call out to the poachers via cell phone and warn them. Makes it hard to catch the poachers when in uniform.

Funniest story she told me was some guy had shoved a lobster in his pants and walked off the pier. They weren't sure so they followed him. He got in a friends car and then went a few blocks before he got out. No knowing he was being followed, the lobster came out of his pants and he was busted. Tool. LOL

Duh, bcuz everyone knows Asians are really smart and do very well in school and therefore....

the Asian poachers probably have really good jobs.....

that pay a lot of money.....

so they can afford their $7200 fine.

    :)
