Boat
Mackerel Magnet (Sailfish 21' CC)
Friday morning pointed the Mackerel Magnet straight west and leapfrogged the fleet by 10-15 miles. Found a few puddlers and jumpers and short foamers… had several perfect popper casts right over the foam and came right through it with no luck.

Ended up going 1.75/2 on the troll. First fish at 11:45am and second at 12:45. Called it a day and headed home. It was roughly a 25 mile ride in and we were stopped regularly due to distractions of jumpers and small foam spots. Fish are everywhere.

Fish #1 was probably 55#. Rushed a gaff into the meat as he made his way to the prop. Bled, spiked/Ike-Jime, shinke-jime, cored, then iced. (check out Ike Jime Federation for the tools of the trade)

Fish #2 started off closer to 40# but after an 8’ mako got a hold of it, came to the boat closer to 35#. At least the bleeding was 50% complete.

Both came on 100# hollow core on the Daiwa Proteus PRTB76XH (super strong and light!) so not much of a fight. The rod shakes once the mako got hold of it were pretty intense!

Came across a giant pod of Risso’s dolphins that put on a great show.

Get out there!

here is what the Ike Jime process looks like. Simplest way is to open the tail and run the wire up and down the spinal cord.
This photo was taken a few weeks ago.
