Hi, gang. I hadn't been out for a while due to work and some rough fishing weather, so I was looking forward to my first trip of the year. As I pulled into the Waianae Harbor I was a little disappointed to see just a few trailers in the parking lot. Woops....not biting, I guess. Headed out at 7:00 AM, straight to R where the north wind was still blowing strong. I ran down southwest to escape the white water. Trolled down to the 1500 pocket outside Nanakuli where I saw a big boat making multiple turns and stopping, then more turns and stopping again. Headed that way and found Magic Sportfishing and its impressive 52' Pacifica. As I got close I took an immediate 4 banger, caught 3, lost 1. Setup again and started moving....bang, fish on. Slowed the boat and 2 more hit. Wow! The weirdest thing was that there were no birds in the area, none. Setup again and trolled around some more. I knew there had to be some rubbish in the water nearby, but I couldn't see anything. Soon another boat made its was in and started baiting with live opelu. He caught a couple of mahi right away, and kept baiting. I trolled a couple of more minutes until a light green spot in the water caught my eye -- a big cargo net. Okay, that explained it. Just as I passed by that net I took a 5 banger. It took a while, having to keep the boat moving to keep the lines tight and having to run back and forth to the helm to steer, but I eventually got all 5. Yeah! What a treat! After a couple of hours I ended up with 14 shibi, 10 to 40 lbs, and one small aku. It was fun with the smaller gear I was running today, Newell 4/0s and Penn 6/0s. I'm stoked!

    Aloha,
    Pupule

    Pupule,
Off to a nice start in 2013! WTG on a nice catch of tunas! Lots of poki/sashimi/spicey tuna. I haven't gone out on my boat since early November.....sure miss hitting the water! If I am lucky, I might be able to get out this Friday.

Thanks, all. It was a fun day on the water, and what a stroke of good luck it was to find Magic while he was on the fish!
