My son was in town for a 10 day leave from the Coast Guard and we had planned to fish all week but our boat took a shit, so we decided to rent a 21' center console from Harbor Boat Rentals in Dana Point so all wouldn't be lost.
Anyways, took him and a couple friends and we left the harbor around 7:30am with some really big deans from the bait barge and headed to the east end. Weather was really cloudy, overcast, light wind and somewhat cold. The ride over was a little bumpy, but not too bad. However, it did make me think about what the ride back may be like. So we made it across safely and started out at the east end rock quarry. Lots of bait and some really nice marks on the finder got us really excited. We made a few drifts and only managed to get one short cuda and one short calico. All others had lock jaw. So we decided to start working our way up the coastline to see if things would get any better. We made our way just past Avalon and finally things started to get a little better. Some legal calico bass along with some shorts, more cuda, one bonito and a yellow. The yellow was a force fed fish, my son decided to jump in and do a little spearfishing. After about an hour of fun the seals started to be a pain in the ass. They seemed pretty desperate, kept chewing the deans off right at the head, lol. Tough day on the water fishing, but it's always an awesome time with my #1 fishing partner, my oldest son TJ!!

OH and yeah, the ride back!!! Well, we heard the small craft warning around 1pm and decided to pull into Avalon to get a little more fuel just in case this becomes a long process. Started the trip back around 1:30pm and somewhere around 5 miles into the ride we saw some birds working the water, so we just couldn't resist going to take a look. There were dolphin feeding and birds dive bombing like crazy. So after chasing our tails for a little while we noticed more chop and more swell. Uh oh, time to get out of here. It was one hell of a wet and bumpy ride back. We got tossed around like we were in a washing machine, we were soaked from head to toe. Thanks to God and my Coastie, Tj, we arrived back at approx. 4 pm completely worn out and happy as can be. The Ocean is nothing to play with, respect!!

    Tim

A tough ride across the channel certainly makes you appreciate the dry rides back when you get them.

Good on you for making the best out of a situation where your boat took a shit.

Glad you had a nice day. Catalina crossing can sometimes be an E-ticket ride, but worth the effort and white knuckles.

Harbor Boat Rentals has really nice, clean Maritime boats...And the people are nice. And the price is reasonable. Another thumbs up for HBR.
