I thought I would give the BF a shot last Sunday a shot on the San Diego. Not a great day but we were all pumped the be on the water. I have never seen so many popper and jig setups. We headed to the latest zone and it was dead. And so went the day. I have to say the skipper gave it a shot but no one landed a fish. We found one school at the end of the day where there was a hookup on a stick bait. It was lost at gaff and we headed home shortly thereafter. It was a slow day in general but there is the next time.

Ive been on 3 days as a youngster that chased BFT for the whole trip with a goose egg. What an awesome deal to be able to even have a chance so close to home and back in a warm bed that night.

Keep at it! Thanks for sharing

They bounced back yesterday with a good trip. 9 landed for 15 anglers.

    Some days you're the "hammer".
    Some days you're the "nail".
That's why we call it "fishing", not "catching".

50 anglers throwing poppers simultaneously sounds like a cluster f*#k. "you'll put your eye out!"

Yes it was a bit of a cluster on the bow. But it made me think about tactics for next time too.

can you elaborate im doing a 2.5day on the chief leaving thursday the 9th
which I believe is an excellent moonphase.

ive been on plenty boats with 6-8 guys on the bow throwing iron, but cant imagine if all 32 people try to throw poppers from the bow yikes!

From the wheel house forward around the bow it was shoulder and some even throwing over the top. The rods banging around was kinda stupid. The skipper did say jigs one side bait on the other side. There were spots up the side where a good cast can be made. I think poppers and stick baits are the latest hot thing. If I was to see that again I might give a heavy jig or bait a try until some burn out tangling and grumbling and take a shot. BMaybe give a pendulum cast off the stern a shot too.

I just did a 2.5 and yes the bow was a danger zone. Need to do a 2-3 body rotation at the bow IMHO. . Let those folks get a couple casts in until the Twofin Bluna sink out then rotate. More productive for a few ,making good casts and putting poppers on target than having 6 or 7 folks jammed up in the bow getting wrapped on gaffs and each other. Oh yeah, and if I were to fish these schools in a Sporty again, I would bring a 14' surf rod for slinging poppers and get my ass kicked fighting fish on said rod...

Or get a few friends and charter a 6 pack boat loaded with the right gear. Your odds are better.

the san diego is a great boat, but I was on it last month with enough people throwing poppers/irons next to the bait tank to wonder if you were going to get a new piercing...

That's so sketch. You notice how few people call out "going out" or "low bridge" when they cast, or better yet, they don't watch their jig all the way through?
I holler it out, so loud that I sometimes frighten other anglers. But, I haven't pierced anyone yet (except myself with a fly rod fishing trout, hahaha).

It is for this exact reason that I just broke down and bought my own boat.

I was fishing on the San Diego about 2 years ago and the Yellowfin bite was going off. I had 4 fish on board by 11am, all on bait, and decided to switch to an Iron. After fighting the crowd on the Bow a few casts, this newbie with a rental rod gets up there and starts trying to throw a jig his buddy lent him. He just kinda tossed it out, over the top of our lines and let it just sink out of sight. Tied everyone on that side of the bow up. The worst part was that he wasn't paying attention, like the jig would magically swim around or something, and was just chatting with his friend. I reached past 2 other guys to tap him on the shoulder and tell him to fix his sh*t, and he lost it on me, like I was ruining his day. Needless to say I lost half the line on my reel and had to hand wind my iron back in. I put my rod in the holder and swore I would never get on a cattle boat again.

Since then I have been restoring my 21ft Fiberform and have boated only 1 fish in 4 trips. but that 1 fish was worth more than any other fish I have caught. Why? because I didn't have some ass hat tourist wasting my time or money. I'm good at doing that on my own.
