    TROLLING LONG RANGE

I’m not sure I know what is best but I use a boat length of mono. Stuff happens on the troll. When lots of folks toss out in the slide and you are hooked up you can get seriously tangled. If you just have spectra it can not only take a long time to get out of it and can be expensive when they...

Dealing with small cuts on your fingers/hands

I’ve read and had a few years of practical experiences. It works. I’ve also seen infections that became far worse in just a 6 or 8 day. The Star has a large bottle of hydrogen peroxide right near to the deck head, crew only but sometimes they share. It saves a trip to the forward staterooms.

Dealing with small cuts on your fingers/hands

I keep a tiny bottle of hydrogen peroxide in the top of my tackle box. When time permits I wash my hands well - 20 seconds and them put a drop or two in the cut. It bubbles and that’s good. After that a band aid, neosporin and perhaps flex wrap. Wahoo time my bottle If H2O2 was quite the hit.

Anybody know if anybody who's gone on a LR trip got infected by Covid while on a trip?

I went on a recent 8 day on the Star, we were fine before, during and after the trip. If someone got sick, I’d know - they DID NOT. Be careful, don’t go if you even think you’ve be exposed, use your brain while on the trip, relax and catch fish.

    MXJ raptor question

My MXJ Raptor is my new go to 40# reel with a Phoenix 870 HAX rod. It casts, in my hands, better than my JX 6/3 or my JX Raptor. I would not hesitate to tie 50# to this reel too, it has plenty of strength, but not infinite line capacity. My feeble casting distance is now more respectable and I...

    Eating Fish on LR Trips?

When folks don’t want the fish, they get steak. I think everyone wins when fish is donated to the galley. I do this every trip and have yet to hear a complaint from the chef or fishermen or crew. Even the non fish folks are happy with their steaks. You have to tell the chef and not surprise...

Try this service video, I hope it helps. Be careful with the screws in the outside as they screw into plastic. Don’t horse them too tight as they just hold the cover in place. If you used the reel even once at sea salt could have entered the two bearings. Clean and oil them and expect the...

Avet HX 5/2 versas JX6/3-MC Rator for 60#

This is a large YFT caught on a regular, non Raptor, JX 6/3. Fish like this are not unusual to catch without ruining the pinion bearing. I DO service my reels after every trip so if one waits until the reel acts funny to service it their mileage may vary.

Wahoo crimps - these really hold tightly!

My hope in this thread is to start some folks like you thinking about their rigs, not to brag. By testing what we use and modifying to yield stronger connections, we may beat that big wahoo. Royal Star and others...?

I fish the Royal Star and Vagabond and I like them both. I get to the landing very early so I have a chance to watch all of the boats unload their fish - the Royal Star seems to take more care than the other boats mentioned. I am sure they are just as capable of catching fish, yet at the dock...

    Avet freespool

Where NOT to grease an Avet

The function of the dog requires a free movement or a lack of excess grease. Nothing or a very light oil is best. Grease impedes normal dog function sometimes. Avet Reels Do the Job at Alijos Rocks

A quote from the American Angler: "At times they were biting heavy string, but the rig of choice would be a castable sized 2-speed reel with spectra and a flourocarbon 50lb topshot with a choice 7-8 foot rod for fishability." My Avets and those of my fishing club "The Barking Spiders" earned their keep. My friend Bill and I managed to boat 20 tuna from 40 - 80 pounds...

    Last boat to Alijos Rocks

I guess you get bit with whatever you fish and stick with. When I threw out a 30# rig during a very dry spell I got bit in 10 seconds. Thank God it was not one over 140 pounds. You guys really did well as always.

    Last boat to Alijos Rocks

As I found out with you Tim, Chris is the real deal and can catch fish. He may have caught the most fish on the boat as he was always on a fish. Ask him the next time you see him about the joys of casting out 30# test at the rocks. His reward was a 94 pound baby with an attitude. He landed...

VAGABOND - Mike is the best skipper and the best guy to hang with. He actually likes his passengers and he does everything to get you fish and make you happy. I am sure the Holiday is a great boat with a good skipper and crew, but MIKE is the man to fish with in this case.

To Dunk or not to dunk?

I think to dunk a reel would be foolish. I open all reels after a trip, remove salt inside, clean everything and oil the bearings. I see salt evidence inside of all reels ever those that just came on the boat and stayed in the rack. Bearings do not like water salt or fresh unless it is...

    Avet jx 1speed or 2speed

50 - 60# Rig for Long Range fishing.

I would think an Avet HX 5/2 would be a great choice too. The amount of drag is equal to handle both 50# and 60# line (20+ pounds). A TLD20II or TLD30II is a great buy if it has had some work to increase freespool, frame strength and makes them topless - a Willfish frame is great. I have...

On the Star they weigh the fish when you catch it before RSW. Tim was saying that the weight they got on the boat exactly equaled the weight they measured at the dock. NO loss due to RSW. This not agree with Wahoodad, but both sources of information are VERY credible. One is a skipper with...

FHS Hi End Wood Tackle Box Information

Mine are a bit more down to earth. I saw these and I guess they are folks with even more money to spend than guys that buy mine, Most of mine have been gifts to my friends in the Barking Spiders Fishing Club. There will be 8 of my boxes on the Royal Star in the July 4th trip. Click on the...

    LX 6/3 rod clamp

I think the aluminum clamps I have are much better. I will replace my stock Avet graphite clamp with one that will last. It would seen that a reel that costs $300-$400 by a company that machines aluminum could make a clamp. PS I took an old metal clamp from Pro Gear drilled it out slightly...

    Torium/Trinidad 16/20/30 Service Tutorial

    Cow hooks

I always wonder how much of what is said on boats is fact and how much relates to sponsorship. The Royal Star strongly advocates Izorline and I hve to agree with them on that, but they are rumored to have Izor sponsorship. They used to like the Mutus and super Mutus, but no more. Now they...

    Most knowledgable longrange tackleshop

I guess Noah's must be in the SD area, but if you are ever in the Long Beach/Los Alamitos area - go to Performance Tackle. Mark helped me a ton with my knots connecting spectra to mono. He made sure I knew how to do it and checked them after each was made. I have had no spectra knot-related...

Out of the box Reel Lubing?

I have been talking about this for a while. Avet reels, unlike any of my other two speed reels, are very sensitive to drag setting. The more drag the tougher it gets to turn the handle. I have three other Shimano two speeds and a Penn 30S - NONE OF WHICH get tougher to turn the crank as you...

HIgh Gear Better then low Gear??

I have a number of ProGear reels with 4:1 gear ratios. I use these for tuna and yelowtail when I do not need a fast retrieve. They allow me to put more pressure on the fish. I also have a couple of Toriums that have 6:1 gear ratios - they are for cranking iron quickly. The same logic applies to...

    Pro Gear 545/541 Tutorial

The yellowtail special or 454 is much like the 541. The bridge is alike with only the jack assembly slightly different. I will try to make a tutorial of the 454 when I service one. Unlike Alan Tani - I do it for free for friends so I don't get as many. Watch for it.

    Removing Grease From Bearings

I like contact cleaner because it does not leave a residue. I seems less dangerous that carb cleaner too. I buy it at n auto parts store.

    Pro Gear 545/541 Tutorial

Pro Gears of the classic variety like the 541 and 545 have been favorites of our fishing group. We collectivley own 3-4 each and they are the first reel we grab when the bite is on. We have caught tons of 25-45 pound albacore, 30-75 pound bluefin tuna and up to 97 pound yellowfin tuna on these...

    More drag for SX

I guess I wonder if you really want that much drag on an SX? The SX gets 9 pounds with free spool and is a reel I want NOW. That means you get to fish up to 36 pound line (I know 30# is the closest standart line test). I like to fish small reels for big fish, but hey I do not want to use ax SX...

Can you fish a MXJ 6/4 with 40# test?

Fish Processing: Side by Side results WFSM vs. 5 Star

I have used Mario, Anthony's and now Five Star. Five star is MUCH BETTER than either of the others. We were amazed at how much more fillets we got from Five Star compared to Mario. Anthony's is very clean and professional. I think Mario regularly might have "lost" a few pounds per fish. I...

    Long Range Tipping

I regularly see people giving small tips. I suggest as others have that you always tip 15-20% and then give 50% of the jackpot if you win it. Those guys work very hard and earn every penny. The amazing deckhands I have seen on the Royal Star and the latest group of great deckhands on the...

I think I may be able to handle that one. I service avout 50 Pro Gears a year and love Alan Tani's tutorials. I only hope the one I do will be even close to his great work so far. I will get to work soon.

Can you fish a MXJ 6/4 with 40# test?

I have an Avet LX 6/4 and plan to use it to fish 40# test at Alijos rocks next year. A friend went to a tackle store and they convinced him that he needed an MXJ 6/4 instead and it could fish 40 or 50# test. I think he screwed up when he bought this smaller reel.

    40lb Bait Rod

The 610 is an underrated stick that I love. If I had only one stick on a long range trip - it would be my 610. Fishes 40 well and 50 great too. Better stick that my 700H IMO. I usually fish it with Pro Gear 541 upgraded to a five stack of HT100 wet drags. I guess is will get my new Avet LX...

    fluro to mono

I have used all three knots mentioned and ALL WORK equally well. The key is to learn one well and stick with it. I can tie the Seaguard knot well and caught several tough 50-60 YFT at Alijos with no problems. Another angler was a uni-uni fan so I asked him to tie it twice - again no problems...

What can I expect at Alijos in June?

Our group, the Barking Spiders, fishes each year in late June or early July on the Star. We caught 268 YFT to 100 pounds last year and caught about 10 wahoo. We had yellowtail for an entire day at a local island too. We have had great luck with bluefin with one trip where we each spider (all...

    Star gets a few!

Brian Cook is back and Moses is great. If you go to the baittank and Moses offers you a bait from his net - TAKE IT. He is a master of bait selection. The crew of the Star are all top of the line - especially the king of the Star JOEY.

    This years gig

This year on the Royal Star 8 day I did as the deckhands suggested, try a simple, unringed 94150 in 4/0 size and 16 - 50#-60# yellowfin tuna were the result. Alijos rocks was a good bet for 3 days (268 YFT) for the boat. I have a complete supply of Mutu and EC118H ringed hooks, but the simple...
