2019 INDEPENDENCE 10 DAY SHOOTOUT – ALL ABOUT TIMING, AVAILABILITY, AND FISHING WITH FRIENDS

Been side by side with most of them at one time or another. Personally I like big boats, not concerned with typical loads...given the choice I will be ahead of the tank or in the bow jig stick or popper rod in hand. We all find what work for us, for you ultra-limited loads, for me a big boat...

2019 INDEPENDENCE 10 DAY SHOOTOUT – ALL ABOUT TIMING, AVAILABILITY, AND FISHING WITH FRIENDS

Looking forward to the reports on that trip. We fished a 7 day with Hi's in 2017, which was lucky as I got wiped out by a hurricane just a couple months later, and would have had to cancel our traditional fall 10 day.

2019 INDEPENDENCE 10 DAY SHOOTOUT – ALL ABOUT TIMING, AVAILABILITY, AND FISHING WITH FRIENDS

Jeff, our #1 factor is it has to one of the big boats. I would say the only downside of the entire operation is the three man staterooms, though my buddy and I were lucky and had a cool 3rd. Other than that it was a great operation...food was off the hook, and a solid crew!

LUPE - STRAIGHT BRAID W/ FLORO OR LONG MONO TOPSHOT W/ SHORT FLORO

Good points all, pretty sure I have the quiver that will allow multiple options, including the dreaded stealth 40, smaller hook and the hoped for 50/60/80 and 100. Always curious to hear multiple preference.

    What To Leave Home?

Replying to our GOMEX YFT on poppers and Frenzy Flyers...PB on the Tranx is right at 100, and bigger model (150+) same night the result of a poorly timed gaff shot w/out a speedy backup.

  63. NaplesJohn

    What if the worst happens?

Texas is challenging, more because of weather issues, as the tuna bite here unfortunately coincides with the beginning of the cold fronts in October and through the winter. We end up cancelling a lot of trips. When they bite...it's pretty fun, and we are roughing it big time with boats that...

    Advancements in gear and technology

Thinking back to my two or three years on the Q105, working with Don and Grabowski...gear in general, RSW, two speeds and the rail. PELICAN DARK-O-THE-MOON FLOATER TRIP---HEARTBREAKER

The GOMEX bite is strange, in that Louisiana fishery seems to be a day time bite; or at least focused on the daylight fishery, maybe because they don't have to fish the night bite. Our fishery is all in proximity to the offshore platforms, though there are fish caught on the troll in daylight...

Remember the day you got your first hypalon handled rod?

I too made a first LR trip on the Q, back in 75-76, along with a bunch of guys from Port Hueneme, I was working on the Pursuit, and would have been in my early teens. In that trip, I distinctly remember my sabre 665H that I wrapped...blue Hypalon foregrip and cord rear grip, and a couple other...

Seeker 8 Day 6/24-7/2 Independence Report

Always appreciate a good report. Thanks again, I will live vicariously until my...

A question for those who fly into SD.

I carry a pretty hefty AVET bag, that I put 13-14 reels in. No problems, oh and I bought a small folding luggage dolly that makes the gate to gate transfers a breeze. Rods are shipped in advance.

Received the best call I could have asked for few minutes ago, phone rings, and it's Mike. He sounded good, clearly excited about the incredible progress he has made. Pretty funny, he did mention that he wouldn't be able to take care of my fall trip. I gave him a pass on that! God Bless Mike...

Most fish caught on a single day and an entire trip of long range fishing?

Luckily many of the crews (and now processors) work hard to reduce the overkill, by enforcing some ethical limits. Keeping mini YT or YFT is a waste...yield is so poor that the juice isn't worth the squeeze. Often now the boats are practicing time management when they leave biting fish, and...

Nice job, remember a few mid grade fish on wahoo tackle in the early 80's when I worked on the Q105. This was pre spectra and pre two speed reels. We were a "Newell" boat then on all of the 50 and lighter gear.

Every Dog Has its Day - An Island Tale

The dreaded snake bite, the skunk...the just can't get bit. Yup, been there, and two years ago, I really let it get me down. Funny how it can put you in a self perpetuating funk. Ready to sell all tackle, and take up a new hobby...luckily those feelings don't last! Can't wait for the next...

THE PACKING HAS BEGUN....EXCEL PHENIX RODS TRIP SEPT 27

With 22 days, 12 hours and 13 minutes to go, the packing has begun. The quiver is padded and in the "Plano Jumbo Airliner"...13 rods with an Ulua and a 90J in foster care in Ventura, CA. The reels are ready to go, just need fresh top-shots, but that can wait. I have been talking to Mike, and...

    NEW TORIUMS----AND AN ULUA

I am adding an Ulua to go with my 90J. I have a Daiwa Saltist 40H, an older Torium 20, and a Newell 533 narrow, and am looking at various options for a new reel, and was interested in the new Toriums, and without both in hand, I am thinking about the 20 and 30 Toriums...thoughts?

New 2015 Shimano Torium A model

OK, added an Ulua for my Fall trip...recommend a 20 or 30? I currently have an older Diawa Saltist 40H, a Narrowed Newell 533, and an old model Torium 20 that make the jig stick lineup...

What have you wished you didn't forget to bring?

I don't worry too much, my buddy Ed will have spares and extras of everything. Spectra connection knots

What are the collective thoughts on the improved albright. I have used it on everything from the real light stuff, up through 100 JB to 80 top shots, with no failure. Easy to tie, easy to tighten, and pretty stealthy. Biggest fish was 115 yft on 65 JB to 50 lb mono top shot.

Mine just came in the mail, and is now assembled. It is just OK, I kinda feel like a kid who ordered the life-like soldiers from a magazine in the 60's....looked real cool and much bigger, and "stouter" in the ad. If you leave reels on. Yummy /frenzy flyer for big tuna

We do pitch downwind on the drift, and pop them. Not the most aerodynamic toy in the box, but our night time yft's really like them. Our grade of fish is mostly 50-100 pound, so fishing them on a 700H with a AvetLX with 50 topshot works well. Leaving in 24 hours with a good weather window....

PORT ARANSAS GULF EAGLE TUNA "EL MUNDO PERDIDO" (12-27-13)

Actually a newbie to the floater TX fishing. I did this trip as it was available. My next time will be on the Scat Cat simply as it is a bigger platform. Sounds the Dolphin docks may be stepping up their game with work being done on their new(?) Dolphin Express. Seems Scat Cat has a loyal...

    Texas Tuna Party Boats

I got to Texas in 2006,, after living and working in Naples, Italy for 8+ years. I really like it here, and even more since moving 30 miles from Corpus Christi to Port Aransas. This will be my final resting place with out a doubt! West Coast fishery; all multi-day boats are 75-125' (most...

    Texas Tuna Party Boats

Here is my last 8 day on the Intrepid. Though many of the SD trips are full on carnage, as is always the case it is fishing...fish have fins, weather/conditions change etc. Regardless the trips are a blast. For more on these check out the San Diego Long Range Forum on BD...

Very different than west coast fishery. Trips that target yft are 56 hour or "floater" trips. Sucess is somewhat weather dependent, with many trips cancelled due to weather The yft bite is centered around off shore oil rigs up to 160 miles from Port Aransas with best bite in the dark...

    FRENZY FLYER....

Not going to happen tonight but I'll post a few photos of how it was rigged. I fished it with a 700H and an Avet LX Raptor with a 100 yard top shot of 50. May try it with the 800H and a JX and 40 but was one of three people that put 5 fish on the boat to 65lbs. Fun stuff and explosive and...

    FRENZY FLYER....

Just fished a GOMEX trip and the hot ticket on 50-85 YFT's was fishing the frenzy flyer much like a popper. See LR reports talking about using then on the kite and baloon, though no reference to cast and retrieve. Would like to try on an upcoming fall 10 day. Any experience or thoughts?
