The drag lever is the key. When you get the pickup put the reel in strip drag and let the fish settle in/run then slowy engage the drag until you reach strike or something close to strike where the drag is working actively.

I detest fish. Everything about it - the texture, the taste, smell. Dont eat fish of any kind. People eat very good with the fish I give them on the trip and the fish I bring home. None of it is wasted.

    Foamer Rig Options

Several unique problems with the original question. 1, Wanting to use a harness. Spinning reels can be used with a plate and harness but there are limitations. 2. Longer rods for casting - if the fish are bigger longer rods are a distinct disadvantage for the angler. 3. Conventional setups...

    Calstar vs U/Composites

Hi Gary, I should have clarified something in my prior post. UC has changed the ratings on some of the CP blanks. The 60HP is now rated at 30-60# 60XH is rated at 50-80# The HP will fish 40 and 50 no problem. The blank is so forgiving that we have customers fishing 60 and even 80 with zero...

    Which Reel Would You Buy??

I love chunking as it is a primary way we Tunafish here on the East Coast. I use 25' of 200 mono. 3' of 200 fluro to a swivel. 9/0 Trokar or Super Mutu. Skin off. Hook buried. Long or short soak depends on current.

Is There a Reason Most LR Captains Tell Everyone to Fish 130?

Never been on any other boat but Excel - Mike and Justin make it clear when they want you fishing what leaders. Its based on many factors. Bait size, time of day. More importantly - size of fish.

Crimping 100lb & 130 Single barrel or Double

Single aluminum sleeves test better than double copper sleeves. The compression of the thicker walled aluminum sleeve spreads the load over the line in the sleeve more efficiently making a better connection. Night fishing for the big guys

I always have one or two of these with me. They fish like a flat fall. Can use assist hooks, J hooks, Circles or Trebles on them. Cant even describe how many BFT and YFT have been caught on the Pink Sardine.

Night fishing for the big guys

Here is a video of a Pink Sardine Jig - (#1 Tuna Jig on the East Coast) with a treble hook on. It looks like a squid fleeing. Notice you can tell the color in this lighting. This jig is bright pink with white and mirrored sides. The jig is really beat up from catching multiple fish as well...

Not an engineer. But for our purposes it doesnt matter. As long as its the same sample for all tests right?
  442. JohnTFT

Is There a Reason Most LR Captains Tell Everyone to Fish 130?

Matt, I think its done with sand paper over a cylinder. You need a machine to cycle the line over the sandpaper. A weight (same for all tests) is attached to the line to keep constant repeatable tension. I believe the sandpaper has to be changed for every sample. More cycles more abrasion...

Is There a Reason Most LR Captains Tell Everyone to Fish 130?

Makai is made by Toray as is Blackwater. The abrasion resistance is extremely high on both products. We have been using 130 and 150 Makai to catch GBFT here in the north east. Almost never use circle hooks as well. I am amazed when I see the line after a big one is landed. It looks perfect...

Night fishing for the big guys

Joe, Those little Duralites. They are super bright and you can rubber band them in line. I am not so sold on glow jigs but I know what lights can do on the line. Sheepshead bay style!!
  445. JohnTFT

Night fishing for the big guys

What can make a huge difference is a glow source on the line. Duralite or glow stick. On a full moon bright moon, put the light source close to the jig or bait. Dark night further away from the bait or jig. Its more about silhouette than glow.

Bingo! You cant break the 130 until the catenary of the line in the water creates additional drag. Have 1/2 the spool in the water, the boat, the drag and the fish pulling on it. Hi Steve, The Quick Rig Charlie Brown hooks have a very different shape than the Owners and the hook that use to be made in Norway. They are more angular in the turn going back to the shank. A 5/0 Charlie Brown is close to a 5/0 Super Mutu. The 6/0 Charlie Brown (my favorite) is smaller than a...

I get that David. My Super VSX's have very light spools. I have timed my Super Cal VSX reels against the Makaira's and the free spool was equal to or exceeded them. The older Penn's have great free spool but not the same as the heavily modified VSX. In fact Cal tried to get the spool blanks...

    mk 30 vs 20

Still dont get it but I appreciate your reply. All of my Cal sheets modified reels have excellent free spool. I could use anyone of them with any size type of bait in any situation. I use reels differently based on line capacity. Bigger baits, kite more line. Free spool not even a consideration...

First time long Ranger gets super cow on the RP

I agree with BHP. Go buy a set of Golf Clubs. Its all down hill and really expensive from here on. Main thing I gained out of this once again is Wind ons by Basil just work. Never fail. Of all the tackle nonsense that gets talked about on these boards the one absolute is how well made BHP...

    mk 30 vs 20

I get it. You can adapt. I am still confused as to what the reel choice has to do with what bait and hook choice you are using as per your initial post?

    mk 30 vs 20

Im so confused? What does a reel have to do with the bait or hook used?

Roller guides or Titanium boat guides

Not long range related but trolling for Tuna, Marlin etc.... When the rod in the rod holder and the line is going up to the outrigger release clip, on roller guide rods most of the time the line is rubbing on the frame and not on the roller guide. I have replaced several roller tops in the shop...

Garry, Punisher and Xtra-Hard are 6/12 nylon. The number has to do with the ratio of carbon atoms in the nylon resins which gives nylon different properties. Way above my pay grade. What 6/12 allows for is low water absorption. Since it doesnt absorb water the line remains stable as far as...

More Water Wolf Kite & Troll Videos

Awesome footage Justin!! I was on both Garry's Team Hoo Trip and mine and Basil's BHP/Trophy Tackle trip. What I got from all of these video is the following - All of our trailing hooks are probably too long. Whether its caught on the dorsal fin or almost caught on the tail it tells me that...

    United Composite 50 - 60lb blank recomenation

I have the CP70HP. I was fishing 50 on it. You could fish 80. Its a bad ass blank. I used it for Wahoo and small Tuna. The blank is also very industrial high tech looking. I can recommend this one as well. The CP is the rod on top. The next is a Viper 7 and an Invictus.

    new mak 30 and 20

I dont think a fishing reel or any gear choice make you a better angler. If you look at past trips we have all been on, how many times has a first timer gone cow crazy on boat gear? Or the largest Yellowfin ever caught on a stock Tiagara and a stock old school E glass Seeker rod. As far as...

    Excel Yellowfin Tuna Videos

This was an awesome thing to be a part of. Garry is the mad scientist. The design team was impressive. A PHd in Math. A guy who designed missiles for a living giving advice on how to stabilize the camera! You can learn a great deal about Tuna behavior from watching the videos. How they try to...

CXViper76 Rail Rod - A game changer from UC

I was at the United Composite plant in January. Watched a blank being built with the dual helix process. Went through the whole build process on a rod. It is impressive to see. The state of the art oven, the helix rolling machine, helix cutting machine. Awesome process. Wahoodad framed out...

CXViper76 Rail Rod - A game changer from UC

Tim - Its been a few years! If you come lets hope the weather is better than our last trip. If the weather does suck it sounds like the UC 7'6" Viper has the right tip for that bad weather. It wont happen right away but there will be a 7'6" Invictus shortly. David - I know I know. But, I have...

OH MY GOD!!! I have a dimemma! What reel to use?

Thats the thing with the Vipers - they are 100 pound rods but you could easily fish 130. Mak 20 or 30. Super Cals - 30 or 50VSX. I have fished both on my Viper with no issues.
