Great news for Area 3A Charters

Hey Doug! Yeah, that was me. Fish wasn't quite that big and GW ate 15 lbs off its tail. But, yeah, that was a fun trip. Really enjoyed talking with your dad. Give me a shout when you get a chance, I lived in Anchorage for 10 years before coming back to ABQ, have done tons of charters out of...

Great news for Area 3A Charters

I stand corrected! Good deal. I just always thought of "SE" as anything below Cordova. Maybe I should look at a map more often. :imdumb:Still, that second baby fish is a bummer. But the regs shutting down charters for 1 or 2 days a week was the real killer. I fished 2 or 3 charters out of Homer...

Great news for Area 3A Charters

Yes, due to Covid 19 and the reduced number of out-of-state anglers coming up this year. Homer Charter Association I believe, maybe others, put together a proposal in May and sent to the IPHC. Looks like they accepted it! Great news.

Great news for Area 3A Charters

Yakutat is SE Alaska, Area 2C. You'll have to look into whether they have increased the 1-daily halibut limit for that area. Either way, there's some real nice fish down there - you'll have plenty to bring home.
  11. nicodemus

    Say what?!?

No disbelief. Just "holy shit!" fishing is going to be effing rad out of SD this year.

OK How Big Of A Freezer Do I need :)

So, if you're not staying overnight, but you are having it processed, it sounds like you're going to pick it up from the processor fresh. Is this correct? If that is the case, you might just want to take home however much fresh from the processor you think you guys might eat in a few days - on...

OK How Big Of A Freezer Do I need :)

Shipping via air cargo (Southwest Airlines, etc.) directly from/by the processor is the best option I've found. Not much over $1 a pound to New Mexico. In fact, my Alaska buddy asked and found out they did the same to AK. He paid about $120 for almost 100 lbs of fish shipped all the way from...

Okay, after a fair amount of consideration and pouring over all the replies here, my current thinking is very much in line with what Gene says here (hey, we Fat Old Guys gotta stick together, right?). For a 40 and under setup I'm looking at the Fathom 25n 2-speed on an Okuma PCH 801XH (30-60...

I plan to cast directly forward from the bow, then charge back toward the stern while reeling like a madman and yelling like a banshee...at my running speed, I should be able to add at least 1-mile per hour to my lure speed. :urno1: I read this in a book called, "How to be THAT GUY."

I've used 5-Star twice, each time they told me in advance that it would take about two weeks for shipping. Not sure if this was due to heavy loads of fish as they were Fall trips. I didn't have a problem with that, as I took one box of fresh fillets home each time.

    Squid for bluefin?

They were small, around 6-7". I started with a circle hook, after the second fish (the 150) the tip had broken off but there was enough curve for the fish to get landed. Several other people broke hooks, so I borrowed the stoutest hook in the box from a guy who offered me tackle. Maybe a 1/0...

    Squid for bluefin?

Two years ago, when the BF were in the 60-90 range on average, I went out on a 3.5 day. Wasn't expecting to target BF, but off to SCI we went. That makes sense. I was wondering if this is something you don't want to do with a circle or semi-circle hook, with the possibility of a hard strike not allowing the hook to set. So I’ve done only one “real” long-range trip – a 7-day in 2012 on the Royal Star. Guadalupe had just shut down and we fished offshore for Bluefin and hit Cedros. Suggestions/Advice for a newbie on his first long-range trip

Well, I don't get seasick, been on all types of boats in pretty hairy weather, so no worries there. And I've done the over/under thing with salmon and halibut and multiple people hooked up, so should be able to adapt to that fairly quickly. As far as gear, I'm not sure I can swing my own gear...

Suggestions/Advice for a newbie on his first long-range trip

Oh, and I'll be using boat gear, though it was strongly advised I pick up some fluorocarbon leader line, so thoughts on boat gear and line would also be welcome.

Suggestions/Advice for a newbie on his first long-range trip

Okay, so I've gotten some real good feedback to my few posts here. I'm doing my first long-range trip, a 7-day'er on the Royal Star mid-September. I'm happy to see it as a "learning" trip, but on the other hand, want to maximize my shot at plenty of catching. Nothing like being well-prepared...

    Bag Limits

Jim - I will definitely post a report and would love to hit Guadalupe... but whatever we end up doing, I'm sure it'll be a fine time. I've been wanting to do one of these trips since I was a kid growing up in San Diego. Took just a 'few' years to pull it off, but I'm still a kid at heart when...

    Bag Limits

Thanks Jim! I'll probably bring along a bag o' smoked salmon to contribute for starters. :-)

    Bag Limits

I'm doing a 7-day trip in September and I'm wondering what the limits are for Mexican waters? I've found a few Google hits that say 10 fish per day, 5 of any one species. But on the Royal Star website is says 30 total fish on a trip over 3 days with no more than 15 of any species. I suppose...

    5-day trip to Guadalupe Island

Okay, I checked out the Royal Star... their 7-day trip mid-September fits my schedule perfectly, and I've heard a number of real good things about the boat and captain(s). From what I've read, the 7-day trips can go to Alijos, so hopefully a smorgasbord of tuna and other fish will be available...

    5-day trip to Guadalupe Island

Oh, man... okay, compare and contrast Guadalupe to Alijos.... better shot at tuna at Alijos? Damn, what have I gotten myself into?

    5-day trip to Guadalupe Island

Thanks again for all the comments/suggestions. Most of the latest conflict with my time off work, though. I'm limited to finding a trip that works with my off time. I did get a PM that suggested September - early October is best at Guadalupe. Can anyone else comment on this time frame for...

    5-day trip to Guadalupe Island

I believe they do check in at Ensenada, but from what I've read it's a pretty quick process. The woman who responded to my email to the Searcher said the 5-day trip gives you about 3.5 days of actual fishing. I'm sure someone on here as first hand experience to share....

    5-day trip to Guadalupe Island

Thanks for the heads up on that, GreenJeans. I had noticed no spots were taken yet, and also saw that earlier 7-day to Alijos. I sent an email to the Searcher and have a phone call scheduled with Cecilia next week, so I'll do my due diligence. It's understandable that they need to fill the...

    5-day trip to Guadalupe Island

You guys are killing me with these pics! One boat or another, I'm getting out there. Sharks just add to the excitement (as long as they're eating someone else's fish! LOL).

    5-day trip to Guadalupe Island

    5-day trip to Guadalupe Island

Wow, you guys don't mess around with quick replies! Helluva report there, Derf. A guy I did some bay fishing with in SD recommended the Searcher. They have shorter trips and have a 5-day trip to Guadalupe the beginning of November, so that's what I was thinking about. My work schedule (let...

    5-day trip to Guadalupe Island

Hi - I'm new here. Usually fish Alaska, but have a hankering to catch some tuna. I'm looking at a shorter long range trip out of San Diego, maybe to Guadalupe Island. I'm wondering what might be the best time for these (early November is open with my current schedule). I really want tuna...
