    Masks or no masks.

Good God man, let's talk about mono or floracarbon! Let's talk about circle or J hooks for fishing Guadalupe! Let's talk about the the best reels or rods for any long range fishing application! Let's argue about the best boats or Captain's, I know there's a issue with covid, but let's...

UC CENTAUR TO HEAVY FOR 60LB

I have one custom wrapped at Bob sands, it is one of my favorite rods! I knocked the dog piss out of the wahoo on seastrike 33's on my 10 day last November! I kinda felt bad, it really wasn't anything close to a fair fight!!!

To tie or crimp titanium leader wire

Me personally, I'd crimp it! I think it's much cleaner than tying it. I normally use single strand wire, and probably have enough in every pound test from 27# -95# , to last 5 trips! Plus every size hook combination possible! And have backup titanium wire crimped wire leaders, in every pound...

    Bill Poole memories

I did a 10 day on the star a few years ago, I always arrive way early. There was a guy who was climbing up on Bill Pooles statue, at first I thought he was doing some type of maintenance on it, then I realized he was some homeless tweaker. I went fucking ballistic! Pulled him off the statue, it...

    Searcher???

All of us long range fisherman, are truly indebted to him! Every long range trip, I look at his statue in front of fishermans landing. And quietly say thanks for a lifetime of wonderful memories!

    Searcher???

I imagine Bill Poole would be rolling in his grave, if he heard anglers complaining about no soda fountain! He'd probably tell anglers to man up! And quit complaining about no fresh water showers too!

    GT knot tutorial..

That is something I thought as well, I'm not going to discount it until I test it personally. But by my personal observation of that video, it seems a tad bit bulky and doesn't look like it will go through the guides very well. I'm not sure if by its name, it's the preferred knot for people...

    WAHOO GEAR

The only Avets I own are Hjx Raptors. It is definitely my wahoo jig and bomb reel of choice. Nice and narrow, great drag systems and is a multi purpose 2 speed reel. Why aren’t there more limited load trips now?

The only downside too that is, Long Range fishing needs a influx of younger anglers. New blood is needed more than ever! I love long range fishing like the air I breath! Why aren’t there more limited load trips now?

I dont believe while you're waiting to board you have to wear one, I know once you board the vessel you do. How long you have to wear it after boarding is another question! But in reply to the folks not wearing one while in line, I guess if it makes you feel safer, so be it!
  20. T

Why aren’t there more limited load trips now?

And honestly, if you haven't quarantined for a couple weeks, what does wearing a mask while standing in line do? It has a negligible at best chance, of preventing covid from being spread from one angler to another! You're odds of contracting it are probably way less on the boat, as compared to...

Why aren’t there more limited load trips now?

You aren't required to wear a mask while you're waiting to board! There are other protocols in place! There are other procedures once you have boarded the vessel. In my opinion, if you're not comfortable about the way things are, maybe you should exercise caution and proceed accordingly. But the...

Why aren’t there more limited load trips now?

It's all about how many feet are available per passenger. Measure the boat length, double it, add the width of the stearn, and divide that by how many passengers they carry. That gives you a fairly accurate estimate of how many feet per angler a vessel has. Unfortunately, vessels that have less...
  23. T

    Long Range Reopening Plan

I was told that the allowed passenger load is predicated, on having 6 feet of rail space per angler. This comes from the office of a well respected long range boat. Some lighter load boats aren't going to have to adjust there loads, some boats carrying more passengers will. Those rules seem odd...

My opinion, find a boat that has a crew you mesh with. For a first time long range fisherman, you're main goal should be the same as mine as a 40 year veteran. Giant east coast bluefin are usually caught in much shallower waters, sometimes in water 100 feet deep. There's no where for them to go, and there hooked on super heavy gear. The boats chase the fish down if necessary. Hook one of those jumbos in 10,000 feet water on the west coast, you have...

Bring some pink yo-zuri floro too, during bright sunny conditions it gets bit well at Guadalupe in that super clear water. I've also had excellent success there with sunline floracarbon, it has a slightly thinner diameter and is super clear, gets bit well, and tests out similar to blue label...

My 10 day 1 month ago, Dtx ruled supreme! I gave away a gold glow Dtx 200 in a drawing, it caught 20 + wahoo! It had no paint left on it and was still catching. They got absolutely hammered. Gold glow, nuclear coral trout, pink mackeral, black pink mackeral, orange mackeral. Saw one fish come...

Polaris Supreme /Guadalupe - Great Fishing

Was there a few weeks ago, 60#got bit early morning, after that 50# with smaller hooks was the ticket. Ringed 2/0 gorrila hooks worked well for me. Guys got bit on 40#, but saw some really big lupe yellowfin escape due to lighter line. For the smaller grade it was fine, but a friend of mine had...

    What if the worst happens?

Not enough surface bait in panama, it's been tried before. Anchovetta don't do well in a bait tank. Hard to procure enough volume of sardines for what we are used to having for hook bait and chumming. It's mostly native bait in those areas, easy for a 4 pack charter boats, not so easy for 20 +...

The model I'm having a issue with is the narrow 12 andros. I told Cal Sheets about the problem, he won't work on them! He knows all about the issues with them, and has less nice things to say about that particular reel than me.

Looks Like The Angler Is Going To Guadalupe On A,Five Day

You go through customs in Ensenada on you're way there, on you're return, and through U.S. customs in San Diego when you return. I have fished ot every year since Guadalupe became available again, this will be the 4th year. That has been the procedure every year.
  357. T

Looks Like The Angler Is Going To Guadalupe On A,Five Day

maybe bad phrasing on my part, losing you're bait in ensenada, having to return to S.D for more bait, then going all the way back to Guadalupe, reduces you're fishing time significantly on a 5 day. Especially since you have to go back to Ensenada to clear customs on the way home, and go through...
  358. T

Looks Like The Angler Is Going To Guadalupe On A,Five Day

If the tide is low, most boats have customs come outside the harbor in a skiff to meet the L.R vessel. I've been on a trip that did that.

Hopefully they can get some of that big bluefin for a consolation prize.
  360. T

Looks Like The Angler Is Going To Guadalupe On A,Five Day

Apparently they went back to san Diego, probably due to there bait rolling because of bad water quality inside the harbor in ensenada. ( not the first time that's happened ) so they had to go back to S.D. for more bait. If you look at the beginning of the thread, you will see the tracking of the...

Pretty sure Guadalupe, probably local bluefin now.
  363. T

Looks Like The Angler Is Going To Guadalupe On A,Five Day

Well it's 7 hours to Ensenada, 1-2 hours in customs, 7 hours back to San Diego, 1-2 hours loading bait again, then roughly 22-24 hours to Guadalupe. So that 5 day has lost at least 16 hours of fishing time.
  364. T

Looks Like The Angler Is Going To Guadalupe On A,Five Day

That is a death blow on a 5 day, I hope everything works out for them.
  365. T

Looks Like The Angler Is Going To Guadalupe On A,Five Day

Most boats won't go in the harbor if the tide is low, water quality is bad and the bait rolls. It can be arranged for them to take a skiff and meet the boat outside the harbor, to go through customs.

The proper method is, cast a jig on the paddy, get a huge backlash! I know a crew member who smoked weed at a party he attended during time off between trips, was tested and came up dirty. He lost his ticket, and it appears like he will never work on a commercial sportfishing boat again, and it has been almost 4 years since he tested dirty. Indeed , rules...

That's why asking him first is a great idea! I'm not aware of any long range Captain who would say it is ok. But if you're in doubt about it, asking him would be a great place to start. Then if there are any negative repurcussions, you can always say, you had permission from the Captain.

    Cal Sheets??

I have a Cal hotrodded 16 on a saltydawg wrapped predator, it is my 60# outfit of choice for Guadalupe yft. Casts outstanding, extremely light, great for flylining sardines, killer drag, and with the lower gear excellent for the end game. I'm not a Shimano junkie, Including my tranx I have 5...

    Cal Sheets??

The drag curve is changed also to fish a more specific line weight, say 60-80# or 80-100# gives you a more precise drag adjustment. I cant speak highly enough about the performance of talicas I've had Cal do.

Unless my eyes are deceiving me, Melton Big game tackle in Anaheim has Max Querto in white now! Apparently in all size spools. Where it gives you color options, tap that, hi vis yellow, moss green, and white appear as options. If this is correct, there will be many happy anglers im sure...

JRI JIGS FRED HALL PRE-ORDER EXTRAVAGANZA

Great deal on great jigs! I used them for the first time on my recent 10 day, will not go on another trip without them ! You know they get bit when everyone else on the boat wants to buy them from you!

    ALL LONG RANGE FISHERMAN

I just got back from a 10 day trip. Great fishing at Guadalupe, pretty decent fishing everywhere else. I kept 4 tuna, 2 wahoo, 4 yellowtail, 3 doeado. It was more than enough for me , ( considering the tuna were all fairly large) so I was content with taking 17 less fish, than mexican limits...

Best Raptor for yo-yo: HX or HXJ?

The only avet I own, is the narrow Hxj, great yoyo real, great for wahoo, throwing jigs and bombs. Much easier fishing a narrow reel, for those applications. Plenty of drag, plenty of speed for ripping jigs and bombs. No complaints so far with it.

Another thing I do, is take the stickers off my gold raiders, and with chrome polish buff them out on a grinder with a polishing attachment, I get them shiny beyond belief. 602. T

What is working for the wahoo, please?

I would mix it up a little, if everyone is fishing green bombs, try another color, bloody runner or Halloween. I've done well on the black chrome seastrike 33's as well, 6xjr's are very effective at times, just dont get to locked into anything.

The newest Royal polaris report sounds pretty encouraging, sounds like a heavy gear affair. Advice on terminal tackle for Guadalupe

I would have some quality j-hooks as well, I like those owner ringed offshore hooks, just fish em like a circle hook. I've had good success at Guadalupe with them, especially in a pick bite where stealth is key. Less damage to you're baits, and I haven't had one pull out yet.
  638. T

    G-lupe intel ??

Every time the boat makes a move, I dump line behind the boat, and do the same method you described on the retrieve. Fortunately I haven't had any problems with spectra digging in. Nothing works better than landing a good fish though.
  666. T

    G-lupe intel ??

Seems the yellowfin are larger there nowadays, the Royal star got one the other day that was 165. I don't recall seeing yellowfin that size years ago, if you got a 100# fish, that was considered large. Landing a 165 on 30 or 40, especially with the Great whites is a really hard thing to do.
  667. T

    G-lupe intel ??

Make sure you hang a 100# plus fish, and grind it all the way to the boat. That will make sure you're spectra is packed nice and tight.
  668. T

    G-lupe intel ??

2 years ago at Guadalupe, I had 13 fish, 7 over a hundred. The first 4 , I fished my mac 10, loaded with 65# solid izor, 60# floro. All on the long soak, no issues whatsoever with digging into the spool.
  669. T

    G-lupe intel ??

If you're reel is spooled correctly, and packed on tightly with a omega line winder, digging in should not be a issue.
