Just me, but not having TV is a plus on any trip...thinking back to the good ol' days working on the Q circa 1985-86...no internet, no "live" reports, no news...trips were an escape for many. Read a book and chill. Yes times have changed...in many respects not for the better!

Fantasy of Throwing Jigs without Wearing Myself Out

I've got multiple 70-90# YFT on a Tranx 500 (both HG and PG) paired to a Phenix 809XHJ, I had a fish last month that was 160+ boatside on the HG, it was painful...more so when the gaff hit gill plates and ripped out, with near instant failure of the 60 floro. What if the worst happens?

Texas is challenging, more because of weather issues, as the tuna bite here unfortunately coincides with the beginning of the cold fronts in October and through the winter. We end up cancelling a lot of trips. When they bite...it's pretty fun, and we are roughing it big time with boats that...

    Advancements in gear and technology

Thinking back to my two or three years on the Q105, working with Don and Grabowski...gear in general, RSW, two speeds and the rail. The two speeds and the rail are two factors that may be the lifeline for this fishery as anglers age out, as they definitely extend the "useful" life of fisherman...

    PELICAN DARK-O-THE-MOON FLOATER TRIP---HEARTBREAKER

The GOMEX bite is strange, in that Louisiana fishery seems to be a day time bite; or at least focused on the daylight fishery, maybe because they don't have to fish the night bite. Luckily many of the crews (and now processors) work hard to reduce the overkill, by enforcing some ethical limits. Keeping mini YT or YFT is a waste...yield is so poor that the juice isn't worth the squeeze. Often now the boats are practicing time management when they leave biting fish, and...

I do have a local 56 hour tuna trip later in the month. Best news is that I was...

    Long Range FISHING Reports

Hmmm...I will be glad to post a report of my current activity...which is picking up the pieces after being shwacked by CAT4 Hurricane Harvey. I used to think being inconvenienced on a LR trip by a distant hurricane was a pain in the ass ---seeing your community smeared all over the map sucks...

No kidding...so good when cooked "just right"!

    North California Albacore

I feel inadequate with "only" 22 rods, though the actual count at home is misleading as all my 8' and longer rods live with my buddy in California...and I do really like those longer sticks!

More fish than your freezer will hold? Then what....

There is also home canning...have a number of friends that do that.

-60C freezers for keeping sushi grade catch year-round

I'm still eating wahoo and tuna from a fall 10 day...plenty good for me, and we eat all the tuna raw or seared with no complaints. Plus my garage gets over 90 on a routine basis in south Texas summers.

    Shogun 5 day-July 29-August 3.

Great report, no doubt some life long memories will live on from this trip. Funny, I caught my first albacore on the "Eldo" in early mid 70's in Morro Bay with my Dad also. Looks like you now have a built in long range partner...Go Dad!!

    Flourocarbon for YFT at Guadalupe

Back in the day (70's and 80's) Pink Ande was the hot ticket before the advent of Flouro. Fished albacore and Bluefin with 12 and 15 pink, #4 and even a #6 hook when they were touchy...it worked.

    Excel and 5 star

This being my first year with the new world order, the trip return is now anticlimactic. I too was an avid cart pusher, and enjoyed the post travel days work out. With that said, the less handling that occurs with the fish is a good thing, with fish going from RSW to a scale to the slush...

    ROYAL POLARIS --- HI'S TACKLE JULY 7-14, 2017

I write my annual trip reports, this being my 7th edition, from a somewhat different perspective than some. I write from both an old and new long range fisherman’s point of view, and this year as a newly minted retiree having completed a 30 year career in the fire service this past December...

Excel 8 Day, July 8th -16th quick recap

RP was on the Ridge, good YT's (great grade), and the small to medium YFT, caught my YFT's on poppers, a chrome Tady TLC and Skip Jigging a Salas 7X...The yellowtail mostly on a 7X, though a couple bait fish. We also got an opportunity to fish bass on the coast...uber fun! I'll have my report...

    RP HI'S TACKLE 7 DAY JULY 7-14 --- WHO'S GOING?

Leaving a few days early, and will be in San Diego on the 5th (John, Ed, Bruce and Brett). Sounds like good yellowtail both on the Ridge and maybe somewhere down the beach as the Excel had good fishing on a 5 day this week. Also, our ride had some wahoo, grouper and more yellows at the Rocks...
  275. NaplesJohn

    Jig/Popper setups

Fished my 10 day last year with a Shimano Tranx with 65 braid, on a Phenix 809XHJ, several wahoo, and a few school size tuna. Very fun set up, and no need to maintain manual level wind...that's my choice. Also fish 60-115lb YFT in the GOMEX, and it works well.
  276. NaplesJohn

RP update - wahoo at the Rocks

Leaving on the RP on the 7th for 7 days. Looking forward to a great trip, no matter what happens, though the improving reports are getting me jazzed. Looks like the full wahoo cache of gear is going!

Experience With This Fisherman's Services Company?

Mike is first a gentleman and a fisherman. From the service side, he is now a part of my trips from start to finish. Removes all drama from the adventure. As noted, he now does reel servicing, so I simply left my reels that needed service with him post trip, he returned them ready to fight...

    MINIMUM COW QUIVER

No doubt, I will make a cow trip...sooner or later, and would fill out existing gear with boat gear. Plus I am typically doing a fall 10 dayer every year, and who knows, maybe the lower banks will go off again circa 2004! With that said, I currently have a Calstar 770XH with an Avet HX Raptor...
  281. NaplesJohn

The one thing you forgot to bring?

Two near misses. Half way to the airport...shit...reels. Hauled ass home and retrieved the reel bag. Last year, almost my passport, wife reminded me on the way to the car to drive to the airport. Am I the only one that has nightmares in the months leading up to a trip, that once on the boat...

Nebraska Goes Long Range Fishing - 15 day Intrepid Report

Wow, Nebraska's positive attitude is awesome. I can remember getting bummed on a bite where I could do no right, and then lamenting on what I missed. Not our man...he just keeps it up savoring all that is great about LR fishing...even when it does not go his way! Amazing "visual" report!!!!
  284. NaplesJohn

How many wahoo rigs for 15/16 dayer?

Don't forget a long rod for the slow grind Salas 7X...explosive bites. Also, something to throw poppers. All recommendations based on 10 trip success.

    Incredible feat

Nice job, remember a few mid grade fish on wahoo tackle in the early 80's when I worked on the Q105. This was pre spectra and pre two speed reels. We were a "Newell" boat then on all of the 50 and lighter gear.

    FLYING FISH PENCIL POPPER

Though can't get much distance, we throw frenzy flyers in the GOMEX very effective on 60 to 100+ grade fish. Cast, let sit, pop, sit...explode. How about on the drift?

Is There a Reason Most LR Captains Tell Everyone to Fish 130?

Interestingly during the life of this thread Bill on the Intrepid noted "The flylined sardine on 100# fluorocarbon and a 4/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu seemed to be the most productive." Though I have not fished a long trip, still seems that adaptability is key...

Yummy /frenzy flyer for big tuna

We do pitch downwind on the drift, and pop them. Not the most aerodynamic toy in the box, but our night time yft's really like them. Our grade of fish is mostly 50-100 pound, so fishing them on a 700H with a AvetLX with 50 topshot works well. Leaving in 24 hours with a good weather window....

Gulf of Mexico, YFT is three in possession regardless of duration of trip. Good news is that fish are generally nice grade 50-80 lb with a fair number of 80-125 models mixed in. Bad news, 48-56 hour trips, and 125-160 mile run to the zone.

So, with the price of gas/diesel going down.....

http://www.dollartimes.com/calculators/inflation.htm Throw in some old numbers, like late 70's $100.00 per day, a 7 day was around 700, and it's pretty close. That is equivalent to 2600.00 in today's dollars. Maybe someone a bit more financialy savy can better calculate.

    SLOW BUILD TO GOING LONG

Steve, no I am solid for normal 8-10 variety, though see a 16 day in the next couple years. I have the gamut from 30-80, with emphasis on 40-50. Thinking maybe a MAK 20 for my 770XXH, put the Avet 30 on the 770XH...As many have noted, I can always use boat gear...to fill in the gaps for kite...

Curious glance at the Long Range schedules

Another issue is the LR demographic. If you look around the boats, the passenger loads are not getting younger. Who is coming in to fill behind the old guys? Are there many 30-40 year old on these trips? If you are working time and money are two factors...On my last trip I fely pretty young...

The Saltydawg EXCEL 15 Day live on the water report

Agree with Barry that the local guys would have the gouge; but with that being said, maybe a technique to try at the Rocks or the Ridge at night if there are flyers around. Our Texas fishery revolves around drifting in proximity to offshore deepwater oil rigs. Famed is Perdido that is about...

The Saltydawg EXCEL 15 Day live on the water report

We throw the frenzy flyer in the GOMEX. YFT's eat em good. I was throwing them on an 700H with an LX Raptor and 50...5 fish 50-65 on my last trip to a floater oil rig. Would seem if they are keyed in on the flyers they will eat em!
  553. NaplesJohn

    Not exactly LR related

Tackle you are considering to use for CB etc will be heavier than you would want to use on inshore reds, flounder etc. Most guides have quality tackle, and I would opt to use their gear for a one time opportunity.

" Truth to tell, Excel is an idiosyncratic boat when it comes to the staterooms. From what I have been told, there is good reason for this. ROD TUBE MAX LENGTH SW AIRLINES

Issue resolved, shipping FEDEX 3 day ground, removes logistics of transportation on front and back end of trip. Appreciate the input!
  598. NaplesJohn

ROD TUBE MAX LENGTH SW AIRLINES

That is my other "option". I have an inquiry to SWA...see what they say. Thanks Wendell

ROD TUBE MAX LENGTH SW AIRLINES

Bummer, also looked at their cargo rates...cheaper then UPS/FEDEX. Already shipped my 90J, it's getting lifetime foster care, but rest of the quiver is used here to.

ROD TUBE MAX LENGTH SW AIRLINES

Any problem with 8' rods in rod tube with SW airlines. Was just looking at there website...and am now officially nervous. Leaving in <2 weeks for Intrepid trip. No problem last year returning from SD to Texas...

Top Ten Long Range Tuna from San Diego

Cool seeing Clifford! I was on the boat in the early eighties, leaving in 1985ish to commercial fish rockfish running the Tursiops in Channel Islands. Great memories of the boat and Don, Jon, Sammy, Clifford, Steve, Gary and a few others. Love seeing the old pics!
  606. NaplesJohn

    Can it be done?!?!?!?

Not a wealth of "recent" LR experience, but my buddy and I pretty much converted to single hooks on the jigs last year on our 8-day Intrepid trip. Lot easier on the release; and with the volume of fish...it really doesn't matter. Funnest part is the "bite" when thing come tight anyway!
  607. NaplesJohn

    Intrepid gets WIFI

    OK, they're live now...reports???
  608. NaplesJohn

    RRIII GETS WI-FI

Simple, don't tell the boss that you have connectivity, put the out of office on and see ya in XX days:-) I'll leave by work BB behind...
  609. NaplesJohn

Credit card surcharge for LR trips?

Personally like the miles associated with the use of the card. Have not paid a penny of interest in 20 years. I don't feel bad as they are making interest on your deposit. Who writes checks anymore???

90J WITH A AVET JX (TEMP SOLUTION)

I'm in Texas and have a 90J. I have a narrow 533 that is currently in California...awaiting our 2013 fall trip. I may be going on a local tuna trip in the next few days. Fish occasionally eat the poppers good, and would also like to throw the iron. Question is would an Avet JX 2 speed w/ 50Lb...

    INTREPID TRIP 19 --- 9/17-9/25 2012

Actually pleasantly surprised as the trip included 3 days of excessive eating on each end, and only gained just shy of three pounds. Was thinking closer to a pound a day...

    INTREPID TRIP 19 --- 9/17-9/25 2012

Crap...try this again. Operator error resulted in accidently closing browser. Left Port Aransas, Texas and am California bound for a long anticipated 2nd annual longrange trip with Ed G, a great friend of over 45 years on the Intrepid leaving San Diego on the 17th. Left behind my better half...

    MOTEL'S HOTEL'S ????

Vagabond is great, same side of the street as the landings. Push your cart right up to the access gate by the pool. Cheap taxi from airport to hotel. Plenty of good eats within walking distance. "Usually" you can park at Vagabond while on your trip, think they charged 5 bucks a day last...

    NARROW NEWELL 533 (TUBURON)--LINE OPTIONS

Just finished the swap out w/ a newell 533 and the narrow Tiburon kit from Charkbait. The reel is on a 6480 as my primary jig stik (can't easily travel w/ an Ulua) on my Sept 8 day on the Intrepid. Filled reel about half way with 50 spectra, and trying to decide on 40 or 50 mono topshot...

Intrepid 8 Day 6/23-7/1 CME Report: The Agony and The Ecstasy

With out a doubt...EPIC report. Nothing better than great pics coupled with the story being told in writing. Those of us waiting for our shot in the barrel (2 months/ 14 days) have something to dream about. Thanks for the report!

Lets see what trips people are going on for the 2012-2013 season

2012---Trip 19, Intrepid 17-25 September 2013---not sure yet, was gonna be a skiff trip...nuf said (no $ involved:-)

    Pounding the surf

Cool seeing surf reports! Spend a lot of time at the beach in South Texas. Thanks for the report
  626. NaplesJohn

Need help from a long range vet!

Not a vet by BD standards, but most of the fleet has quality rental tackle (check with specific boat). Don't go crazy buying ahead of time, though the basic hooks, jigs etc area good start point.
  627. NaplesJohn

    Where's the report Bill?

Nice video...just under 3 months to go!

    ULTIMATE YO-YO ROD

Plenty of variations, but for a dedicated yo-yo stik, what would you use, and why? Thinking about adding a dedicated one to the new quiver.

I screwed up Catchy Tackle is alive and well

David, based on your experience on our favorite boat, are the bombs "da bomb" on the fall 8 dayers...specifically Trip 19, a mere 2 months, 27 days and 8 hours in the future?

Gary, I wanted to take the time to publically thank you for the work you did on these rods. I will fish them with pride, and with a heavy heart as they also pay tribute to the brothers lost on 911 at the WTC. So cool running into an expat west coaster in Texas...we are a rare breed. Can't...
