By the way...This reel was modified for 2-Speed operation by Ray Lemming (Sp?) not Cal. I do believe that Ray was the guy that came up with the original 2-Speed concept. But again, that's not scientific, just my recollection.

Just checked gear ratio...UNSCIENTIFIC!!!...About 3.2 on high and about 1.3 on low.

I used a Tiagra 50W for years, never enough line on it! On the Rooster, sometimes the kite is just a spot on the horizon, and the 50W would be down to about a 1/3 of a spool when that far out. You gain some line back on the take, but a good sized fish will pull you to the rail and start dumping...

Yes, funny that the bobber balloon wasn't effective. With fish boiling all around it, my balloon went thru them several times with no luck. It did work well on the shark tho, got several of those. Lynn Freed got a nice 180 or so on the bobber and that's the only one I saw caught using this...

Hi Gary, Reel was purchased just after Penn started making the 50S, so the reel is probably around 20 years old. The reel Serial Number is J910172, I believe this means the reel was made in October of 1991. The reel was just serviced and is in excellent mechanical condition. jos1
