It's been a very tough week for us here in Asuncion losing an important friend and beloved member of the community. Ross had been sick with what he thought was the flu but the Coroner said he had been quite sick for awhile and was beyond medical help when he finally agreed to go to the clinic...

the best thing about Ross & Troy catching tuna & wahoo is we all get to eat it!!! He takes it to Sunset Restaurant Mary and we have a fresh fish feast with the catch of the day prepared many different ways! Gracias amigo.

Stan taught so many kids how to shore fish and gave them gear to fish with and as a medic he fixed up lots of local folks. He was larger than life, always smiling and generous with his time and expertise and yes he blanketed the town and vehicles with BD stickers!

Fishing is off and on this week..you have to work for yellowtail the last few days on an early bite. Our spearos were stoked with some nice fish....a 50 lb yellowtail and even heavier broomtail grouper...fattest one I have seen!

As usual we spent the Day of the Dead visiting Surfdoc in the panteon here in Bahia Asuncion. Not a day goes by we dont think of him! I am pretty sure he is chucking a jig over on the other side! Wish I had some BD stickers to put on his panga!

Greeting from beautiful Bahia Asuncion. It's been awhile since I posted a fishing report as we just haven't had alot of guests visit due to Covid. Our season really doesnt get cracking until October and this year is no exception. The calico& yellowtail bite is generally wide open with easy...

the ice house opens at 8:00am and is a good idea to ice up before coming to Bahia Asuncion...cube ice is available here at many stores. Shaved ice is often available for a peso a kilo at the fishing cooperatives but they dont always have it.

In Bahia Asuncion, the water taxi guys just take you to the gas station where you pay the posted price...more inconvenient but usually a nice experience. They can bring fuel out in jugs to you with the station receipt too.

how did you get there? Are flights running again? Cedros was closed up tight due to Covid last time I heard so good to know things have opened up again!

it depends which spot you fish...this week the bigger fish were caught north of here and were deeper, over 100' so only caught jigging with irons but the water warmed up the last few days so maybe the surface fish are back up...the spearos will be happy.

You can camp here in Bahia Asu[ncion at Campo Sirena and get on some of those enormous yellowtail that are just off the beach a couple miles down from the campground. December fishing is fantastic here and the village welcomes visitors warmly and appreciates your presence...no covid here either!

At the moment both Cedros & Natividad are closed due to Covid and they are serious about it. But towing your boat to Pta.Eugenia is a good option. Fishing guide Tomas Arce has a beautiful house there with 6 bedrooms, a full kitchen and rooms rent for $25 a night I think just up from the boat...

John & Rick had a great day on the pond with Capt. Juan Arce Marron as always. They caught a nice mixed bag of medium size yellowtail, a nice grouper, some calicos & bonita close to home. It is super calm this week with no wind....perfect fishing weather!

The fishing is picking up as the water warms up here in Bahia Asuncion. Most anglers have been getting easy limits of YT close to town and some nice calico bass, bonita, grouper. Locals have spotted marlin, caught and lost wahoo, baracuda and some dorado so October looks like it's gonna be...

my daughter Sirena got to stretch some fish lips with Juan....yellowtail bite is hot and Rossman & other fishers have been catching beauties over 40 lbs, one guy lost a wahoo so they are starting to show now and tons of little doraditos. Beautiful fishing weather and a nice swell to catch some...

it seems fairly localized to about a 30 mile radius but I also know that there are also reports from San Juanico. Because there are fur seals and spotted seals etc experts figure they are dying from something they are feeding on offshore then coming ashore here.

Yellowtail bite still decent here, more dorado now especially under all those dead floating sealions! Now the barrracuda are here so the wahoo should show up any day now! tick tick tick. This youngster outfished the adults and was stoked to land this nice YT. More tourists arriving all the time...

here in BAhia Asuncion the Biosphere Ranger tagged at least 119 dead pinnipeds that were mostly male California Sea Lions but there were also a few Gueadalupe Fur seals, spotted seals & elephant seals as well. Some beaches had dead sealions every 50-100 yards...pretty stinky. Luckily Hurricane...

the water temps finally are over 70 degrees and fishing is picking up...better late than never eh! Shore fishing has been great with lots of halibut everywhere. Panga fishers are catching dorado, bonita, sheepshead, calico, grouper and some nice size yellowtail too. Happy to be making sashimi...

Things are pretty normal here in Asuncion, beaches open, restaurants, hotels, stores etc. Locals are happy some visitors are here to help out the suffering economy. No Covid here so no panic. Just have to wear a mask in stores. Fishing is picking up!!!!

We have been having absolutely perfect fishing weather conditions...much to the dismay of the surfers! hardly any wind and no swell on the pond! Shore fishing is the best it has ever been with halibut everywhere! Come on down!

problem is the panga drivers rarely ride up front and they are hanging on to the steering wheel or tiller...passengers suffer but you can always ask them to slow down por favor or move to the back with them.

Just our luck...we had no threatening storms in September this season but October is making up for that. We generally dont book fishing charters in September as we often have to cancel them so October is very busy. But this season's crazy weather in October has made us cancel several charters...

I ride the bus up and down from Ensenada to Bahia Asuncion...a 10 hour ride and I actually like it most times. However I much prefer the Aguila bus line...ABC has some crappy, smelly buses and Aguila has much nicer ones and less stops...they are comfortable and now have personal movie and game...

there are outlets on 2 pots at each en of the camp....it's pretty rustic

a whaler is pretty easy to launch but it takes 2 people...there is usually someone around to help or we can help find someone..fishermen are pretty busy fishing and you have to wait till the lobstermen clear the ramp to use it...best to anchor out so you only have to launch at haul out...

bring magnum exraps 30's mackeral flavour, a rig for wahoo with steel leader, seems the tuna are even grabbing the exraps...and the most successful lure for jigging yellowtail are the Salas 6X Juniors blue and white....shore fishing is pretty good for corvina & corbina and maybe halibut...white...

Plans are in the works for a kick ass headstone made of laja rock with a big tuna carved into it and his name and dates.

It has been super hot all week which brought the surface ocean temp up to 81 in some spots which has the tuna all excited...it's not wide open but there are lots of schools of dolphin with tuna chasing them. Rossman got a slew of nice 30 lb yellowfin pictured below...while it looks like small...

the local fishermen tell me that the fishing greatly improves when lobster season begins with all that stinky bait in the traps and they may be right as the yellowtail fishing has been on fire with fish in the 25-35lb range mostly both trolling rapalas & jigging depending on the area fished...

We have been doing alot of fuel runs and while not easy....it's doable plus you can come ashore and have a nice lunch and get fresh supplies. We do have 15 gallon fuel jugs we can lift onboard but not many of them...mostly 5 gallon jugs. So it is slogging jugs around but at least you wont get...

Finally our season has begun and the water warmed up! Yesterday local fish guru Rossman got into a school of 40 pounders close to town so Capt. Juan Arce & our maintenance man Efrain went out a few minutes from town in our baby panga and immediately caught these beauties trolling...about 30-35...

lots of factors drive storms but that luscious warm water of the gulf often lures them over that way this time of year....we hope as we have fish to catch over here finally! It's these unpredictable ones that get our panties in a wad!

Fishing has been off and on this month as the water temps in Asuncion were below normal for August as no storms have come up our way but temps rose the last couple days and fishing improved a bit. But the cool water is good for the local fishing cooperativas as it helps for the abalone & lobster...

Our local fishing cooperativa California de San Ignacio held their annual fishing tournament yesterday to raise funds for their student scholarship program. It was a slow day on the water and only 2 yellowtail were caught all day and pretty far offshore where most pangas don't go. The 1st place...

Oh so THAT'S why all the cruising sailboats and power boats heading north are taking on fuel here in Bahia Asuncion. Diesel as of today is nearly 65 pesos a liter or about $3.60 a gallon so Turtle Bay is more than double. We have been real busy doing fuel runs in our panga for the cruising...

The boys were pretty happy yesterday to land a nice 65 lb wahoo while casting irons! Our deckhand Nelson caught it and also caught the first wahoo last year too...he's now known as the wahoo whisperer! They also caught some nicer yellowtail in the 20-30 lb range and monster calicos, barracuda...

Most of the guys took all their fish but I did manage to smoke some yellowtail a few days ago. Our last anglers vacuum packed all the tuna and even brought their own freezer!

Today's charter was cancelled due to rain...and the guys filled their freezer with tuna anyway! Looking ominous here and I suspect a light rain and no wind for much of today according to the satellite map...fine with us...lets see what tomorrows anglers bring in!

that's right....they found dolphins close to shore and started getting tuna and some were caught 2 miles and a tad more...the dolphins ran up the coast not out to sea. Look forward to seeing you Mateo....fuckin Stan is right...we have visited him a few times in the last month...brought more beer.

The big swell didnt deter the fishermen the last few days from hauling in some nice big tails...mostly over 40 lbs. The weather is pretty darn good for December with air temps in the day up to 80 and water temps still over 70.

a couple of our favorite calico bass fishermen visited us this week from Pta.Banda and had a couple days of real bad ass bass fishing in excellent conditions around San Roque Island. They also got some yellowtail for sashimi and ceviche but concentrated on bass...over 30 fish were released and...

the mornings have been perfectly calm and all our anglers got their limits long before the wind comes up in the afternoons...but the winds this time of year are calming and we get around 15 knots and up to 20 in the afternoons sometimes which is nice for keeping it cool.

in Asuncion, we dont usually get yellowtail until August when the water starts to warm up...but our season lasts into January and this year we even had yellowtail into February.

the yellowtail bite continues all week long and some monster calicos on the chew too. Max who is 12 years old was so stoked to catch his first fish in the ocean! He is hooked now and didnt want to leave Asuncion as the local kids took him boogie boarding and skateboarding in the hood! The water...

Once again our daughter Sirena proves her fishing prowess and landed her limit of yellowtail in an hour...she has sore arms today! The bite was hot and fish are getting bigger...the biggest was over 25 lb. It was a perfect day of calm wind and seas..they saw a leatherback turtle too...

20 surfer lifeguards came to Asuncion last week to do a 3 day workshop on water safety skills. They rocked the town and there were over 70 participants who were totally stoked with the program. The biosphere permits have been required for a couple years now...there are only daily permits or yearly "passports" and are available at the Reserve office in Guerrero Negro and possibly other Reserve offices and sometimes Jaime the Reserve rep here in Asuncion has some too.... the passports...

I just arranged a water taxi for 4 kids to surf at Natividad and there were 2 ways to get a panga to there & Cedros from Pta. Eugenia. there is a guy named Tomas who runs a water taxi, his home # is 615-158-0398 and cel is 615-103-9734 You can also talk to the coop fishermen who go there early...

Gouging? really? how much does the guy charge? I sell fishing licenses and yes, we add on a few pesos for our time...how much do you make an hour? Selling a fishing license takes about a half hour by the time the person picks your brain for info and you fill out the forms, make change...

yes the yearly license is good for anywhere in Mexico...also a heads up, the fees went up a bit last month to 591.oo pesos for the year, 453 for a month, 314 for a week and 148 for a day permit.

One of the 5 missing men's bodies was found around San Pablo. There is an extensive search going on via plane, choppers, pangas from many coops, people walking the beaches too. Famlies are just hoping to recover the bodies at this point....tragic.

We havent had a rain in a long long time...years so yesterdays rain was most welcome...especially in the mountains where ranchers have struggled and lost much of their cattle to drought. Looks like the rain covered much of the peninsula...so the construction areas are bound to be a big mess...

A group of Vagabundo campers took over Campo Sirena this week and had a blast fishing, beachcombing, hiking and exploring the area on quads. A couple of them went calico fishing with Capt. Juan who was glad to have a day off from pulling on yellowtail. The calico bite was wide open at San Roque...

the water temps are up to mid 70's, Capt. Juan is REEL happy to be back in action and he got Lee & Pat from 29 Palms into some bigger yellowtail (25-28 lbs)yesterday jigging Krocodiles as the rapallas were only producing firecrackers and bonita...although they did hook a big eye tuna...little...

good news here...water temps back up to above 70...whew! Yesteray, Juan finally got back out onto the water after his operation and got his guys onto a few more YT for our sunday patio party..looks like it's gonna be a great fishing week...calm seas...gorgeous days, not much wind...yeah...

the water temps took a dive last week and with the big swell, full moon and strong currents fishing was a challenge this week. But anglers did manage to find yellowtail...some firecrackers off San Roque and nice size tails off San Pablo...I'm sure the boys will do a full report when they get...

It's a real smorgasboard of fish out there these days off of Asuncion. The spearos are getting the biggest yellowtail in the 40 lb range and trolling and yoyo-ing are yeilding fish around the 15-20 lb range. The bonita are huge and yesterday's anglers Mike,Brian & Gerry caught a nice grouper too...

Big A....I have already ordered bug dinners for you..who's your buddy eh! Any chance of bringing a big ass bag of brown sugar down for brine for smoking fish? i'm all out now...see ya soon...safe journey.

yesterday was epic...picture this...Stanibuns running...yeah really....like running up the beach screaming like a girl who saw a mouse...waving his yellowtail around in the air...one proud papa....way to go stan shit eating grins lasted all day!!

I thought that the TIPP was only necessary for boats over 14 or 15'. sorry Mateo...your charm wont cut it with the new and improved fisheries or immigration officers...but good luck with that! remember that it is the boat owner who is fined 20, 30-000 pesos for not having a fishing license.

I'll ask the fisheries guy next time he comes around about how the funds are used but I do know this that they have hired more fisheries enforcement officers in this area and are putting a boat in the water too so they can check out vessels at sea...including those big seiners, party boats etc.
