First I'd start on the outside. Remove almost all the screws on that side and look for rusty screws. Replace them all with one size larger and liberal 5200. If they are 16" apart add 2-3 @ 8" for good measure at the intrusion spot.

It does look like too much trailer. Measure twice...cut once...especially on a boat. If you're not sure, take it to a pro for advice.

Maybe that's the easy answer. The medium frame reels are more desirable prior to hookup. The heavier framed reels are more desirable after the hookup.....

Speaking generally. Any vintage reel that Cal Sheets will still work on is worth the effort if you already own it. Penn 16s comes to mind....

Opinions will vary. I have both but think the 30 gives more comfort for the much longer trips, below Cabo for big stubborn yellowfin. Our local bluefin the 20 is a good choice.

The "S" should denote that is a two speed reel. Is yours a two speed? Also VI is 6th generation while V is 5th generation.

Always watch the flags. With the outboard so far back they swing the ass end around and the the wind pushes even further. Making a K turn on approach rather than driving like it's a car....or drive the car like you're on ice with the wind blowing the wrong way....

You might have to look a bit but the very roomy and seaworthy Albin 28TE was rated as "best riding in its class" for a number of years...

For that kind of dough I would expand the search to the 20' grady white (209). Look nationally for best selection.

I used the shimano's for many years and were very durable. I switched to generation #5 internationals for trollers mostly because the clickers are louder....for me.

Get a shoulder harness or a surplus military bag/camera bag with flap and secure to rail...

I've used that style a lot through the years. The hardest part might be getting the rod out of the holder when bit with a large Bft.

Depending on the age of the Honda's?? There are some very good lighter weight options in the 4 cylinder 150-175 hp. market....

Great rod....just gotta find one.

Apex sportfishing (Mission Bay) is a good choice.

I'm in the medium/small generator camp. Very important to keep carb clean if you want it to start when you need it!

One of the very best in its size/vintage class. Price of admission is what it is.

I think the 20' Grady will be the biggest by quite a bit but well worth it. Finding one may include out of state searching. Also lining up a top OB mechanic sooner rather than later is a high priority.

A longtime friend in the industry told me this. "Regardless of size or age of the boat expect to add another 30% to the purchase price to eventually get the boat just the way you want it" I thought it was a stretch at the time.....but not anymore.

All good advice. A t-top adds additional safety with great handholds for getting around the boat. It's a great choice for a smaller boat....just don't forget it's a smaller boat.

I have many OG Saltigas. My mileage with factory service has been mixed. Happy for you but I have that "Hell just froze over feeling". :)

#1 choice is SD plastics. On the cheap can be assorted sizes of poly-pro cutting boards on line or dollar stores....

When I go out I don't ask for anything. The right kind of friends in the know are the ones who get invited back. The ones who like to say "I don't want to own a boat..I just want to know someone who owns a boat" ....haven't talked to them in awhile. :)

In the pics showing the solid looking repair the grey colored vertical material where the white "starboard" is attached to.....The grey material appears to be the pre-fab fiberglass composite I mentioned earlier.

I think you will look back at it as being a great chapter in your life. If it ever stops being fun just take a break....it's hard to get back in.

If the hardware looks rusty on the outside.....it's more rusty on the inside. Easy to replace all of that. Use the new Fiberglass for the verticals that look rough. Winter time stuff.

I would seek out heavy duty construction grade fiberglass. Tubes, square tubes, angles and sheets. Can order online and it can be shipped to you. I used this for under deck support when adding a large bait tank.

I've watched guys back in their slip then spread a drop (catch) cloth across the rear slip for anything that was not to go in the water. It went fairly well.....I'd rent a trailer.

If memory serves yamaha had an odd change to categorize and identify model based on hp vs model year...save the purchase date.

Transom savers are less effective because of the much longer reach and angles involved. We would rig rachet straps from upper motor to the stern cleats and second strap lower unit to trailer to lessen the bouncing effect. The bouncing is the hardest on the transom.... (Macgyver special)

I'm with you. 23' is not small on baja roads. I'd look for a notched style designed for a single outboard only with a small splashwell or stout splash boards. Also a fully self draining cockpit with generous scuppers! Combined with a tried and true manufacturer ....Shopping is fun.

The single speeds are always a bit simpler...

The esteros are usually open but can be open or closed due to storm activity.

Punta Chivato is a great spot. Three islands just offshore, 7 miles of sandy beach (shell beach) and esteros both to the north and south..

I would call San Diego propeller. When I had that setup he knew all the numbers off the top of his head regarding pitch and number of blades...ran like a different boat! He shipped it to me faster than I could get across town to pick it up. Tom.

They went through the transom progression for a reason. Integrity, waterline length, ride and planing at lower and higher speeds. Don't like the word euro...but it would be my choice.

They are all good, but....in particular the 20visz punches above it's weight class. Buy both. Best, Tom.

What it's worth vs what would it go for in a crazy market......only you can find out.

Regarding the VSX models. On a spec chart the 16vsx compares a fairly close spread relative to it's 16visx cousin....All being bulletproof. The bigger sizes show bigger spreads..

Also could just add/glob a good amount of marine white sealant (3/8 or so) to the bottom of the scupper bowl thus allowing less area for water to settle.

Having been down this road I had better luck finding a complete 16s already upgraded. Then selling my existing 16s for a reasonable amount.

Sometimes...depending on the size of the hull it's a tight fit to get the scupper drain outlets to drain out "above" the water line. On smaller hulls the flat drain plate fittings wind up too deep and they run out of scope in the drain hose to still drain above the water line. The style...

Installing the next size up in diameter might help. I put a small rag or sponge to soak up the last bit of water.

Member of the Big scar club myself. Do what the docs say and you'll be back out there...little older and a little wiser...

One of the very best selling points of owning an outboard is getting the entire running gear up out of the water when not under way. Can't think of a reason not to keep it raised....

It would need to be damn clean if you plan to paint the bottom..

I swapped out for standard phillips + that I always have around...

If you take off the side plate Cal leaves a sticker on the inside with an abbreviation of the date worked on and targeted pound test.

Double check that the surge brake is not engaging while in reverse....

Probably good for more than 40. I let one go and still think about it. Screw it, fish what you like!

I've had four Grady's while working my way up and had good luck with all and a big fan of Pursuits also. Generally speaking the newer the model the better job they did with "integrating" the outboard bracket realizing the weight of 4strokes became here to stay. Extending the running surface...

There's a bunch around...getting them to bite is another story.

What is the width of your boat?? About that time many manufactures were increasing the beam from 8' to 8.5 to help with the weight of the 4 strokes. If you're 8.5 you're in better shape to handle the extra weight.

Also look for a "hidden" small fuel filter that sits vertically in the fuel tanks pickup tube. Mine was pencil sized wire mesh and 80% clogged. Unfortunately...one of the last things I checked.

We had good luck also in Whittier....closer than Seward. Lots of islands to hide from the wind.

Don't forget to fresh water flush you kicker (even if you don't use it) every time you flush your main. They will ingest saltwater and send up the shaft whenever you accelerate when bow is high and stern squats causing heavy salt buildup.....don't ask me how I know.

An outdrive that lives in a slip is high maintence...Nice boat and pretty good sized for a first boat.

To keep the weight down and depending on your needs....you probably don't need any suspension or the widest tires and agree with assist only. I like em! but going from a 60lb to a 35-40 lb model is a game changer.

I'm a long time customer of the hull liner that you reference. 20 yrs. last 4 boat have had them.. It's what I choose now with a 33' boat. If full time in a slip with these you don't need paint. If your a part timer in the slip go with paint and a diver.

Likely the rails are there because it's a "raised deck" model and a safety feature. Lots of work-arounds...just make it beefy.

Highly recommend that you take the basic coast guard classes WITH your dad. Having everyone on the same page helps immensely.

Most panga's are made in Mexico. Plusses and minuses.... Pretty easy to go charter one and see for yourself. If you want bang for the buck the panga could make sense.....otherwise a U.S. Center console. The very well made Maritime Skiff kinda has a "panga look"

I also had a Artic Fox trailer product. Three years with no issues, sold it for what I paid for it and the guy drove 500 miles to be first in line to buy it. Pretty good.

Speed doesn't kill.....accuracy kills. At that age I would include the 7mm-08 in the search. Find a copy of the book "cartridges of the world" for a good read.

It sounds like you should go with a pro.....like the names listed. Location and size can be a big deal in a 22'. Also if you're lucky try to keep the outflow above the waterline with SS through hull.

I've had that happen on a penn international. Ken's custom reels fixed it for me by shaving some metal off.

Not a lot in a 25' boat. Bigger tabs maybe but those days the ocean is in charge.

Also check the outside bottom of the hull to avoid any strakes or chines that might be inline.

I'd be interested in the Collector and the chrome jethead if it's made by Burns.

Be prepared to put the money saved towards insurance..

Sounds like you have good taste. Stretching out the boat length early as much as you can will probably result in keeping it for additional years thus saving additional bucks ....

Gradys are fairly available through the years with shapes and sizes..very few complaints.

San Diego boat movers does that.....or a pro that is local to you....plan your offload!

If you use it it's cheap...if you don't it's expensive. Expect 350-375. I like Marina Village.

If you want to carry a kicker the 90 is too heavy. A 70 is plenty for that hull.

Often the best fishing buddies are those that have or have had their own boats. They are the ones who understand first hand all that is involved. SCI is a big ask solo.

The Zukes are great motors. But they'd have to clearly beat the yami in either price/warranty/ or local mechanic/ service or turning the bigger prop for me to choose them over the Yami's.

Stern railings are not substantial! You can get by only using one side transom eye (determine which side neighboring boat are using) using a good knot and then tying again on the other transom eye for backup looping outside the outboard. Make sure the knot you choose is done right.

Seek out CC regs on through-hull fittings. You've done the hard part already..now put in the good stuff.

If plastic I like the ones where the built in fuel gauge can still be seen where it is mounted under the seat.. If fiberglass or metal some have a vertical see-through strip that shows the fuel level.

Earlier you mentioned a earlier Seafarer. As fourstroke motors became more popular the hulls went from beams of 8' to 8.5 to help deal with the added weight of the fourstrokes. Hopefully yours is one of the wider hulls. Grady will know over the phone..

42 gal. BT from Mark Wisch was a perfect fit behind the engine deck hatch (23"-24" of room) and the rear hatch covering the fuel tank. A very big 28 footer.

Everyone is a compromise. The GW 25 with a single plus kicker is very manageable solo. Also wouldn't upgrade for less than 4 feet....

Also the rub rails can leak. Through the years if they've had a decent bump to the rubrail (trailer-dock-piling) it can cause the fastening screws to deform and leak. Then when passing through waves the water will rise up and can can creep through top and bottom fiberglass hull portions...

I can speak to the difference on a 20' GW center console. I went from a 225 2 stroke that went near 50mph to a 150 4 stroke. Still went into the 30's and never missed the bigger motor. Weights of the two motors was the same....check yours as it could make a difference..

On the Albin having the "flush deck" model gave me plenty of room for a 45 gal pacific edge fiberglass bait tank. On the engine box model your are looking at bait bags on the stern or tank on the step. Many years was rated as best riding 28 footer by boating mag.

I had a 28 Albin flush deck. 3 sides with drop curtain...many things to like about that boat! Also Shamrock and Osprey.

also keep in mind your personal sightlines at near plane when bow wants to come up. In so cal I don't think we need all the benefits of a pilothouse vs WA. Higher rails are always better!
