I've been throwing a CLC90H Calcutta rod, which is very similar to the Teramar, for over a decade! Great for surface iron. It's my #2 jigstick behind my Calcutta 930FA Made in Washington State rod. They're much different than the glass Ulua and J90 rods.

Were the hooks up high dangling? I've seen deckhands cut jigs off for this reason a few times.

I definitely use 3' leader if I'm tying straight braid to the pre-made leader. You need some stretch at the end of the battle. Helps with head shakes and abrasion resistance against the hull of the boat. We've all had aggressive fish go under the boat! Anchors and props aren't very forgiving either.

You can get 400 yards of #80 Maxcuatro on a Talica 12II. It's exactly how mine is setup. I use it for flying #40 or sinker-rig #60.

I just did an upgrade to my Newell 229. Added a Bryan Young 5- washer drag stack. Way smoother with more drag pressure. Found the mod on Ebay.

I'd get the 400A (power gear). It has a 5 8-1 ratio with 22 lbs of drag compared to the regular Tranx 400HG with 18 lbs of drag. Holds 270 yards of 50# braid which is the same as the Trinidad 12A.

I use a Talica 12II for this. Loaded with 65# spectra, it fishes 40-60# easily having up to 40# drag on tap. Great for dropper loop, sinker rig, flyliner and yo yo jigging.

My Talica 10II has 500 yards of #50 Maxcuatro with a short topshot of #35 Japanese Seaguar fluorocarbon. Has #20 max drag. Set it at #15 and fish 25-40#.

The Tranx 500 has 25# of drag making it an easy 40# reel. Set the drag at 15# and ready to go. I've fished 50# on mine for my bluefin popper rig.

I got 300 yards of 50# Power Slick V2 on one my 16NA's. My other has 300 yards of #50 Maxcuatro with room for a #30 topshot for surface iron.
