    Skipjack 24 Flybridge Transom Rebuild

I don't have enough experience to give recommendations. My understanding is that if you can't or don't want to deal with making the outside look pretty, you do it from the inside. As Rusty mentioned, if you have to do stringer work, you may as well do it from the inside. What I noticed on my...

    Skipjack 24 Flybridge Transom Rebuild

I did the transom (and stringers) on my 24 open. Had to remove the I/O. I chose to remove old transom from inside since I was doing the stringers too. Not a fun job, not easy, but definitely doable. Was my first boat, so I knew nothing about these kind of jobs. I'm glad I did it, but I hope to...

My Skipjack stringers were the same - floating just off the hull. If you search around, you'll see that most rebuilders do the same. Those are nuts that you insert from the bottom of the backing plate - you thread bolts down through the seacock's flange into the nuts. So you don't have to make 3 extra holes in your hull. OK, I think I smell what you're cookin. Basically, the flanged seacock gives a thicker/stronger base, with more surface area in contact with the hull. Using Marelon gives added insurance of never corroding. So, what about my thru-hull drain? It's the mushroom type, exiting out the port side...

    DP mixed bag 8/28/16

Stayed local because of the forecasted wind. Got a scoop of 4-6" sardines from Newport - I'd say less than 10% died throughout the day. We tried drifting around a couple spots in Crystal Cove and Salt Creek for nada. Wind started to pick up late in the am, so we anchored in about 60' near DP...

    Cabin headliner - Skipjack 24 open (1977)

Is there a way to remove (partially or completely) the cabin headliner? I can peel it down a bit if I remove some screws, at the door/dash area, but it's attached to the underside of the deck around the hatch area and forward from there. The reason for this is to access the wiring for the...

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys. I have a science background so I used the science journal format. East end 7/31

Summary: Got to the east end around 0900 and drifted around between Seal Rocks and Church Rock, metering a lot of fish, but more so in the shallows. Ended up anchoring in about 16' and it was a WFO calico bite immediately, and for most of the day. Mostly legals with a few toads - we released the...

    East end 7/17/16 mixed bag

Fished the front and backside of the east end for a mix bag of bonito, calico, sheephead, and whitefish. Bonito on flylined sardines, everything else on cut squid and shrimp. Mostly shorts with a few keepers. Saw some short cudas chase my mint Tady. Water was about 72, swell was about 1-3', wind...

    Mechanic for impeller replacement

Thank you all for your advice/offers. Today I found a local mechanic that helped me out. It was a bitch to get out. Took us about 2 hours, but about 45 minutes of that was spent showing my son how to do it.

They do look simple to replace but access to it is tough on my rig. If I watched somebody do it the first time I might have the confidence to do it myself in the future.

A simple scratch, or something serious?

I've had this scratch in my hull since I've owned the boat. Never thought much of it until today, I was in the cabin, looking into the storage area under the bench and noticed daylight shining through the scratch. Didn't feel soft or anything, but it's still very disconcerting. Don't know much...

    Are these termites?

Thanks for the responses. I read some other posts where people have bombed their boats. You guys think I could do that with just my cover, taped off? I think that would be a lot easier than using plastic sheets.
  502. fishgrappler

    Are these termites?

Found these on my Skippy. I'm sure they are termites, but I'm hoping otherwise. Didn't find any droppings, but I guess it doesn't matter if I see the actual insects themselves.

Another update. Today I learned that shifting into gear does not "lock" the choke open, like I said in a post above. HAHA, that was a stupid question. I'm in OC but thanks for the offer. Now I'm thinking if I pull the carb to disassemble and clean, I might as well do the whole rebuild. Or is the rebuild much more involved than just replacing some parts as I reassemble?

    Stalling Mercruiser 5.7

Yeah, I was taking to a mechanic today and he also said the Bravos don't have the shift interrupter. I'm assuming the fuel pump diaphragm and check valves are WITHIN the fuel pump? If so, my understanding is that the fuel pump is not serviceable - I was quoted $280 for a new unit. When you...

Soooooo, I was just about to pull the carb but decided to fire it up to see what happens. Started right up and kept running - a little rough but never stalled. Idled around 250 rpm (my earlier guesstimate of 1000 was obviously way off), and crept up to about 275 as she warmed up. Bumped into...

    Stalling Mercruiser 5.7

...well, before I tear into it, I just read in my service manual about the idle mixture needle. Since nobody mentioned this, I'm assuming it's not the problem here. But I have to ask, could I just need an adjustment to smooth out my idle?
  528. fishgrappler

    Stalling Mercruiser 5.7

Picked up a new gasket today for about 4 bucks. Still plan to do the least expensive/invasive items first, starting with cleaning the carb. That said, any of you have luck with those "dip" cleaning kits? Thanks for all the help thus far.

    Stalling Mercruiser 5.7

Makes perfect sense. So if I'm gonna remove it should I go ahead and rebuild it, rather than clean, reinstall with new gaskets and possibly have to remove again and rebuild with another set of new gaskets? Thanks again.
  530. fishgrappler

    Stalling Mercruiser 5.7

Thanks for the response. I think my plan of attack will be to clean/rebuild the carb, then work back to the fuel pump. I've never worked on carbs before. If I remove it just to clean it, can I reuse the gaskets (assuming they don't rip into pieces)?

Thanks for the reply. The service manual that I have (not sure it's for my exact engine) calls it a MerCarb 2 barrel (43mm). Pic below, if that helps.
