non-tape arbors ......... when and what..........

Yep a converted drum sander. I made a bunch in different sizes back when I made gunstocks, handy for final fitting the barrel channel. Some have straight shanks. Might as well use them for something. Yea, a drill motor is fine for this. But I have 4 metal lathes, it is a lot faster for...

non-tape arbors ......... when and what..........

Below is the original reel seat on the Calcutta Rod. It was not usable, but it had a good bond, I had to cut it up with a 32 TPI hacksaw and peel it off with vise grips. So yea, install the grip correctly and it will never rotate.

non-tape arbors ......... when and what..........

Yep if travel restrictions are lifted I will take it over to Utmost when you are on duty. It is a fun rod, capable of handeling 50 pound line. I have a hunch it may have been built for shark fishing in the San Diego area. I have a pre World War II Penn reel that matches it perfectly. If...

non-tape arbors ......... when and what..........

Big gaps for the paste epoxy. Lots of tape on both sides of the reel seat final position as you want "too much" epoxy and some is pushed out when you position the reel seat. I watch the curing of the epoxy and remove most of it as it cures. Then pull the tape after curing. I wanted to...

    Bennett’s time capsule

A good outdoor knife. The ones below were my dad's, purchased in the 1950's and early 1960's. He died in 1994, I cherish the knives dearly, they bring back fond memories. A knife that you used will be more important. And a good classic American made reel. Penns from the 1960's...

Covid-19 Shuts Down Local Charter Fishing Fleets

Recreational boats are non essential. The B.C. Coasties and Wildlife guys will be watching, likely have a boat or two hovering on the boundary lines like they do during our halibut season. Often the B.C. guys team up with our Coast Guard and DFW guys, all on the same boat.

Yea too far for me! B.C. fishing is out for us as the border is closed to non essential traffic both ways. Darn! I can see Coyote and Constance areas from my driveway. Even made a new halibut measuring stick last week, marked at 90 and 126 cm.

I have melted a lot of lead way back in the past with a coleman stove and an old cast iron frying pan. Chop your lead up with an axe into smaller pieces before melting. No need to melt down the lead unless you have the molds and are pouring sinkers or jigs. A waste of time and fuel. I...

Some of my mooching "Holes" in the Straits are 240 to 300 feet deep. I have no problem mooching the holes with 6 to 8 ounces weight and the proper rod. Pick the correct currents and catch fish. You have to understand how to use that mooching motor, we are not trolling here. The boat must...

Fishing Chinook Salmon - THE COMMERCIAL WAY!

I will get a pic this weekend. Jump ring just hangs off the ring that the hook crimps to. Soft iron or the 'ol dark steel mechanics wire. Seattle Marine used to sell them by the box of 100. A ring about 5/16" diameter, open so you could crimp it onto the hook ring. The purpose is to corrode...

Fishing Chinook Salmon - THE COMMERCIAL WAY!

Commercial spoons like the Tom Macks in my photo come without hooks. The fisherman adds the hook of his choice. For this spoon I use a 5/0 Mustad 9510XX Stainless open eye Siwash. Crimp the eye onto the hook ring. Sharpen the hook, give it a little beak, and crimp the barb. NO...

Has there ever been any discussion regarding a method to reduce the boat ramp chaos? The Port Angeles ramps are joke during Halibut days, everyone in the NW wants to put in a boat. Tags, slot limits, mimic the BC method, anything to spread the fishermen, and boat ramp madness, over a longer...

    PA halibut derby

Last years winner was caught off Freshwater Bay in 60 feet, near the ledges where the drops to deep water start. Jeff said he was fishing in mud! (Brown water from the Elwha discharge). They can be anywhere. Saw an 80 caught in 120 feet midways along the hook a few years ago.

    PA halibut derby

Fish the slacks just before tide change. Current tables are your friend. It can get nasty out here, especially if a wind blows up and bucks the tide. Watch the weather reports. Back when I had the 17 Whaler I had a few white knuckle big pucker rides back to PA Harbor fron Green Point. The...

    Brass Bolts

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. A no no for salt water use, the znc disappears and the bolts fail. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin and will withstand salt water use, but will discolor. 316 stainless is the best if you can find it, most hardware ss bolts are 304, which will stain...

PacBay RW3-XL Rod wrapper and thread/components

Or put an extension on. Had to look in the Pac Bay catalog to figure out which wrapper this is. Hmm. Still thinking. I need another wrapper for the times when mine is tied up and it would be nice to have a second for a dryer.

Rail Rod for the Batson Collection

I dropped by the Batson shop today and took a look at this rod. Man! The photos do not do justice, it is a beautiful rod and it really feels "just right". The Dawg grip is well done and looks like it belongs on the rod. This rod would be ideal for the Pacific NW and Alaskan Halibut guys...
