I'm a firm believer in the FG knot. I do though still tie the Tony Pena knot in a crunch and have never had it fail either.
Some of you may have read about my trip to PV with the Marla operation with the Osuna brothers. All they tie is the FG knot on everything and I mean everything from...
I go on the Avet/Graphtec/Raider charter every year and I've won a few of those rods at the raffles. I fish the one with the reel seat for wahoo jigs. I fish 80 spectra tied to about 3 feet of 200 fluoro. Works great for casting and also setting the hook if you want to.
The Graphtec Cow rod is a winner. I can't say enough about how the rod performed and the costs of the rods are amazing. I wish he would have came out with that rod when I started to chase the big tunas. It would have saved me a ton of money and wrapping. ;)
We just came back from the 4.5 dayer on the El Pescador with the Osuna brothers at Puerto Vallarta.
We had some fantastic fishing and we caught multiple cows and I caught my personnel best Super Cow of 340lber on an Avet 30W 3 speed and a Rick Ozaki's Graphtec 3XH. :)
I will write...
Make friends with someone on this board with a winder and then go over and have them wind it on. Buy some beer or other liquids and you can pick their brains about fishing LR. :) ORRR If you plan on doing LR fishing a lot, I would buy a winder. http://www.propowerwinder.net/ I have one...
Wanna hear something funny? I went to the 99 cent store and they had this small mustache scissor with a small comb for $1. I just compared it to the similar size 20 dollar spectra scissor I bought and it cuts the same. Dollar tree has them too.
I don't know how to fix your issue with your motor. But, I have to say if my motor won't start again for 20-30 minutes. I would be shitty bricks and I would never ever turn that off again until I got to the docks.
BFT is tough fishing. Last time out, if you could cast way out there to the foamer. You might get bit. Might. The schools would sink out so fast and even when they didn't they wanted nothing to do with the colt sniper or bait.
Whatever it takes to get fish for people to take home.
I have a brand new in BLUE Avet HX 5/2 MC Raptor. Again, brand new in box.
Asking $400 FIRM. Can ship on buyers dime. I am in the West Los Angeles area and work in Gardena and go to OC often.
I was out a few weeks ago and caught a few 70-80 lb BFT on size 2 hook. Yes, size 2. Everyone was saying use 2/0 circles so, I showed it to the 2nd captain. He goes to look at the bait and they were small. I kept taking him hooks and finally had some size 2 from the albacore days. He said...
Hit up John at Trophy Tackles.com. I just picked up a silver 15T from John last week and got it today. I wound on 60 hollow and man it's a sweet reel. I think it'll be good for Lupe and when it's smaller tuna 100-150 at Clarion and HB. :D Lupe would also be a good use for the reel.
I have for sale Swifty power washer for washing your spectra. These are not made any longer as far as I can search for. :) Great for unwinding your spectra and then I let it soak in fresh water for a week and then wind it back on.
Comes with the following spools:
3 Large spool for...
Sounds like you got the right reel, it's priced right and you can fish multiple line classes. One of the best bang for the buck reels in my opinion.
The rest, borrow the gear from Excel. They have really good loaner gear and will set you up right.
I have a brand new Avet HX Raptor with the stock ergonomic handle and I want to replace with the power handle from like an Avet 30 which have.
Question is how do you get the handle off the arm? Picture below. :)
Hi Guys. I wanted to give a shout out to [email protected] My friend dropped the reel off at the factory and Mike and the Okuma team fixed the reel and shipped it back to me within a week and a half at no charge. I love great service from Okuma!
Available again. Was going to ship it to someone and they sent me $15 bucks PayPal for shipping but had the opportunity to get on a BFT charter at the last minute. I spaced and forgot it and I get a message stating if I don't ship the book immediately he was going to blast me here on BD for...
Yup. Flat fall, crocodile, Tady or Salas chrome and blue all will work.
I was going to use my good old Salas in chrome and blue which I have caught many YFT and BFT on. But decided to try the colt sniper.
As the saying goes, if everyone is using one lure, then that's the only lure that got...
Nanette, it was fantastic seeing you after all these years. Nanette was the pro staffer for Graphite USA and I've been out fished by her continuously and learned a lot from her over time.
Till next time!
Got back last night from a really good trip on the Pac Voyager. Captain Mark and his crew were fantastic and super helpful and Chef Jeff is the best chef outside of the LR fleet. Chef Jeff 1/2 lb burgers and breakfast etc are awesome. I usually skip meals but, not when I'm eating...
I use a small butane torch and silver 56% solder. I guess that's called brazing.
The basic difference between soldering and brazing is the temperature which is necessary to melt the filler metal. Soldering is a low-temperature analog to brazing.Soldering takes place with...
Agreed. If I could have gotten the right size solid ring in time, I would have changed them out.
Also, I am doing a 2 dayer this weekend and I made a few flat falls. They're charging like $45 bucks for one rigged!
Good to know.
Brazing is a metal-joining process in which two or more metal items are joined together by melting and flowing a filler metal into the joint, the filler metal having a lower melting point than the adjoining metal.
I guess the correct term is brazing with a mini torch. :D Right?
Last year, we were trolling the DTX and a few of us, including me, lost the back hook. That's why I put brazed the split rings.
We shall see.
No, they stay the same shape. I've used them on the DTX and had wahoo hit on the troll with no problems.
The main thing I know people complain about is they come open. Me being lazy kind of solves it. :D
So, I got lazy and I just solder the split rings as I solder regular rings for hooks and lures. I did that on my Nomads DTX as I didn't have the rings in the right size.
What I do is solder the two spots where they open up.
What do you guys think?
Am I just being lazy?
I am cleaning my fishing room and found this from my old boat.
Clymer Volvo Penta Stern Drive Shop Manual 1994-2000. Take a look at the photo of the back cover to see which motors and stern drives are covered.
Free for anyone that wants to come and pick it up in LA. Or, I can ship...
I have for sale a Near New In Box Okuma Makaria 16 SEA in Silver with box, lugs (lugs and plug), tool, oil, and tags and all paperwork.
The reel is brand new, took it on my last trip and kept it without any line in my stateroom. Brought it as a spare, but never used it. Again, the...
Talking about Armando. I remember on one trip, he was on the deck and a new guy was on the bait tank and the new guy threw bait and splashed water and scale all over Armando's sunglasses. Armando had a bit of a temper and threw his sunglasses on the deck, stomped on it and then threw it...
The good BFT bite which we are seeing now has only been going on two or three years. I've been on 7-day trips years ago when the fleet got into the BFT, but the big ones were like 100 lbs or less. The average was like 30 lbs.
About 10 years ago or more. We were on the Pac Voyager on a 3-day...
I have three new cow bells. Trolled 0-14 KNOTS! 9 INCHES LONG.
16 OZ POLISHED STAINLESS STEEL RATTLE HEAD JET. WATER "POURS" THROUGH IT! BACKED WITH TRIPLE MYLAR SKIRTS! 480# CABLE LEADER WITH AN 9/0 HOOK! In the case.
First one is orange, black and silver. The second one is...
I have for sale a near new Factory United Composites Extreme Series Viper RCX 76 rail rod. Rod is rated for 80 lbs to 130 lbs, ideally used for 100 to 130 lbs with 45 lbs of max drag. I took it on one trip and fished it once and will now build one in my own colors.
Everything is in...
Miss the boat. Did my first 10 dayers on there in 1998, bought the trip from someone on Allcoast who did website work for the Q. Captain Brian Simms, Armando, Tommy, Cal.
We went first to Alijos rocks and fished YFT. Using a Tiburon framed TLD 20II on a Calstar 765XL. Everyone back then...
I had a Mak 20 SEA reel serviced a few years ago and didn't get to use it again till this year.
When I was on a small squirrely 20lb tuna and it's going side to side real fast my trip in April. My Mak 20 did the weirdest thing. As the fish changed direction and there was no...
Hey guys, I have a few of those rods and also really good friends with Rick Ozaki who makes them. The 3x is a good 100lbs rod. 4x is a good 130lbs rod and the 5x is a good kite rod. I fished the 4x and 5x and pulled on many many many sharks at HB. Let me tell you, Rick is an LR fisherman...
Hey Guys. So, there are no rumors started. LOL
My buddies and I were on the trip that returned early. We first started off at Hurricane Banks and the fishing was none existent. We had sharks after sharks after sharks. A few wahoos, but only 2 big tuna caught in 2 days. So, we booked for...
Hi Guys, It's not the cost of the prices I'm talking about, it's the price shock. I paid last year 85 cent at Fivestar last year at the same time. Due to our trip being cut short (report to come later, maybe), we had to use Fisherman's processing as the only choice. I had two wahoos for about...
Holy crap. Had to use fisherman’s processing this week at 1.05 pound. When does it become more economical to cut your own fish and buy your own vacuum packing machine?
I will be honest with you that I will never take it to fisherman’s EVER!!!!!!
Sorry. For 10 dayer, you just need 2 pairs of underwear, 2 shirts, 2 shorts and 2 pairs of socks. Just wash every night and hang over your bunkmate. :D
My recommendation is where you have room and that one guy who recommended a backpack. Those days are over from the days I humped an Alice...
A few years ago, I brought my buddy on one of the long trips and I told him to put his stuff in duffle bags. He bought one of those huge one used for baseball equipment stuffed and even the deckhands had a hell of a time dragging that thing.
Rolling is so much easier than putting stuff on your...
Oh, another thing. Get a bag with wheels, helps dragging that stuff instead of throwing out your shoulders. Samsonite duffle with wheels. 69 bucks...
Samsonite Andante 2 Boxed Drop Bottom Wheeled Duffel 28, Riverrock/Black
Like others had said. No problem. If I'm not mistaken, Shimano made a new side plate and the thicker drag plate that they sent you if you contacted them. These were for the original Trinidad and you might want to call Shimano to check if they still have them. Also, you can add the dog from...
Sad to hear. A long time ago, I had a factory 765L which the ceramic insert cracked. I took it to the factory and Leon personally came out and I explained to him that the insert cracked while fishing at Alijos Rocks. He told me to leave the rod and he'll have it fixed and then I got a call...
I want to give a great shout out to Tiburon Engineering. Long story short, I was on one of my 16 day trip on the Indy many years ago and I was fishing my original series SST 16. And while fishing at the rail, I had the plastic part of the handle unscrew and fall into the water. My...
Was at the Fred Hall show in Long Beach and saw this at one of the fishing boat booths.
I was thinking of getting one of these made to sit on my bait tank. Know anyone who could make me one in the LA area? How much do you think it would cost?
Rodless trip in January was down there on the Excel. Some big fish, but not quantity. I've been on a 12 or 14 day trip on the Intrepid many years ago. We fished the lower banks and we got 6 tuna for the entire trip..... If I were you, I'd rather have a variety trip on the 8 or 10 dayer.
The Rick Ozaki West Coast Marketing 16 day charter for the last few years has had Matt as the captain. Matt is very fishy and he gets along with the crew very well. Also, he's put us on some awesome bite for big tuna and wahoo. I would highly recommend fishing with him.
LOL. I'm just repeating what he said.
Also, yes it does eliminate the torque for the fisherman and works like a spinning rod. But, on the blank, the transition of the line coming from top to the side to the bottom has to have some torque. Minimal it maybe. Just saying.
My buddy JL had all his rods acid wrapped and I've wrapped a few that way and I do see the benefits. But, I hate the bundling mess and now just do the traditional. It all works, although one senior deckhand on the Indy told me he's see the blank explode from the torque of the acid wrap.
Late report from yesterday's fishing.
Launched out of MDR at 830 am with some light fog with my friend Max and Jeff. Visibility was to 1/2 mile or so. Went to get bait and got a nice scoop of huge sardines for $30. They needed that bait in SD, they were strong and swam nicely. I...
Man... I had a similar instance of my anchor falling off on the 5 freeway in the last 90's. I had bought the boat from Allison marines and they had placed an anchor chain holder to hold the anchor in place. I guess they stop making it and it was kind of a screw that went through and held the...
Thx. I got some 4200. I've dealt with 5200 and it's for real permanent. Thanks for the tip on Marine Tex. Didn't know that one.
Also, I'm looking for like 1" screws. The bolts are the 1/4 inch and I was able to find oval heads in 2 inches. What size screws are close to 1/4" Should I get...
Here are some pictures of what I got going on.
Stern should be able to do all 3 1/4" x 2" screw with the locking nuts. On the port side, depending on where the holes are on the plate, I may have to use one of those wood screws to go through the rails.
On the sides, the rail over hands about...
Question. I'm about to install some bow rails and stern rails.
I will be using 1/4" screws with nylon locking washers and 1" fender washers.
Question. Do you put in locking washers too?
Also, do you apply 5200 between the base plate and the boat and also put in 5200 onto the...
Funny thing. That is one of biggest fear. Having it all opened up and missing one little part.
Thanks for the tips about running something through the pee hole. I also ordered the impeller kit just in case. I've seen enough videos of it to see how it's done. I used to work on auto...
It's a 22 foot Amato panga setup for fishing. Motor oil, filter and lower unit probably can do myself by watching Youtube. The impeller, I saw all the different Youtube videos and probably do it. But, I don't want to make it worse if you know what I mean.
The reason for the impeller is I...
Another note. Freaking summer brings out the idiots on the launch ramp. In the morning, it's mostly fishermen and usually, they know common launching ramp etiquettes.
When coming in, boy the cruisers were out coming in or going out. One dude with a big pontoon cuts me off on my lane while...
Launched out of Southshore launch ramp and went to Nacho's for some nice smaller 4-6 inch sardines. Great bait.
The wind was light as predicted and small swells coming from the north-west. I planned to start fishing the west end, but turned more to the middle of the island as we started to...
Looking for a mobile boat mechanic or someone who works on their boat to show me and help me do some work on the boat. I like to see someone do the work to learn the gotcha.
I need to do the following:
Lower unit oil change
Impeller ( I got some trash in there or...
I have for sale a Furuno Radar set with 1623 display and RSB 0093 dome in a perfect clean working condition. Power cables, display cover and bracket and also uncut dome cables.
I was going to put it on my boat but changed my mind and went with a smaller unit. A good safety item for...
Hope Andy doesn't mind my 2 cents. But, I went there to look at the boat and meet his brother and we talked. They are on summer break from school and I'm sure they would rather fish than work on a boat.
I'm looking for a boat seat that sits on top of the bait tank
like in this picture. Tom of Towerfab had the picture and I've reached out to him.
But, anyone know where I can purchase?
Will sit on top of my bait tank.
I have a 21' Amato and they are good boats. I've had 2 other boats and they all get wet. I do though wish I could have a boat with cabin that would fit in my drive way.
By the way, in Puerto Vallarta while fishing the Tres Maria island there were lots of commercial pangas out there. That is...
I am thinking of selling my 2015 Amato 21 foot center console with a 2016 90 HP Mercury on an extended bracket with 350 hours.
The boat has a Lowrance HD 7 Gen 2 Touch and sitting on a trailer. The boat has a built-in bait tank and also a Stryker T Top.
Easy to tow and a great boat...
Yup. If you only have limited time but want to get your big fish fix in. It's a great option.
On bringing back the fish, we brought home 49lbs of frozen tuna in the soft cooler bags. We checked in the bag at the PV airport at 11:00 am and our flight left at 4:00 pm and arrived home at 6:30...
Was at PV on the Marla IV and they were tying the FG knot. I asked Roberto how many turns he takes on the knot and he said 25 times every time. The funny thing was when we catch a fish on the LR boat. We cut off the line and do another one.
The PV guys, the check to see if the line has...
Finished the post.
Guys that like big tuna, but can't spend the two weeks. I would highly recommend the Marla sports fishing with the Osuna brothers. I've heard about their operation for a long time and I now know for sure that they are the best operation down there. Free everything and...
Rodless Jim set up his first charter on the Marla IV out of PV. Story is on the Mainland Mexico board.
Just got home from a 3-day adventure on the Rodless Jim (Long Range Board) charter on the Marla IV out of PV.
Rodless Jim has been talking about how the fishing out of PV with the Osuna brothers and the big tuna they catch for a long time. Jim put together the Rodless charter and...
Here is the DTX which caught 6 wahoos last April. Caught a wahoo almost every time in the water. It's now retired. :)
Also, I would replace the split ring and solder on a solid ring as I've seen the split ring give. Hooks are fine.
I have TWO BRAND NEW in bag Seaguar Premier 100 lbs 50 yards.
Amazon has them on sale for $69.51 each. I am asking $50 per bag and you pay for shipping at actual costs. USPS flat rate is about $7.00.
Send me a PM or can pick up in LA.
Next year, I am going to bring 24" balloons for everyone. I thought of the 36", but I don't think we have enough hot wind on the boat to blow 24 of those up and most passengers would pass out trying. ;)
Yes, Paul does have it down. I'm sure others will copy him on the next trip.
On the way...
Normal LR troll speed of 8 or 9 knots. IMO, I would say they like to be slower.
On how far, you want it way out to the lure to dig in and stay there. It's not a maurader and likes it way out. Best success was down the center way back at almost end of the whitewash.
These billed minnow...
Same way as a maurader is wired. Also of note are those billed lures really dig into the water. They are almost impossible to bring in while the boat is moving, even in low gear on a 30. I would fish it with a 50 size reel.
It works.... I would get at least two and also I would replace the split ring with solid rings. I had the back end of my ring come open after a fish, lucky it was already on deck. Another angler who was trolling the lure lost the entire fish when the lure came back without the back hook after...
Yes, 2 hours. Usually, there is current so after about 10 drops, I change to bait. This year, there was no current, so might as well get the cardio in. I would light the jig with a flashlight, drop it down down down, wind till I can't wind any more. Drop it down and do that about 3 or 4...
I remember that trip, it was epic for Oxnard. We can put Bubba in a duffle bag and let him out on the 2nd travel day south. He can jump off the boat if he wants. :-D
I have to come and visit you in Costa Rica. I hear it's unreal.
Just came back last Friday on the Rick Ozaki annual 16 dayers. As always, the fishing was great and catching wasn't great for everyone, but still fun and better than working.
Since Rick's charter is the first trip after maintenance, we get to load up sleep on the boat the day before...
I bought a brand new Komodo SS KDS-463PLX from a company on the east coast. Anyway, I can come to the factory and swap for a KDS-463P? It would save a lot of hassle of shipping the reel back.
If the hook goes into the bone and cannot penetrate through, it will bend or break.
I have one hook when the fish was coming over the rail, the hook got stuck on the rail. It straightened out just like the picture, except the tip, stayed attached.
Leaving in April on a 16 dayer on the Indy. Last trip, I took some 250G glow in the dark flatfall jigs and added a 9/0 7691 hooks instead of the two assist hooks.
Because the 7691 has a long shank, the hook would snag the line.
I got some Mustad Kaiju hooks and the shank is much...
Actually, no reel seat. Straight onto the cork. It was a slow fishing, so there was one to help him with the fish and another one that had the screwdriver to tighten the reel clamp. The cork was shreaded.
On last years trip, there was this guy we call Paul the Longshoreman. We were seeing smaller fish that day like 100lbs or less and Paul was fishing his 9-foot jig stick with a Penn Fathom Torque 40LD. The thing was, he goes to me the Torque drag was screwed up.
Well, he went and fished it...
Seriously. WTH. Good luck hotel guest not getting your doors dinged.
The hotel operator is going to try to work out something with the Port to allow any possible overflow parking to go across the street (Fisherman's Landing).
Coming in late to this discussion. I remember that thread and I used to have an Accurate 665 and also Trinidad 20. Night and day.
Anyone have one of the new Penn's and open up and let's see pictures of the gears? How wide are they and how are they cut?
Very cool. We have all done crazy shit at one time or another. My only comment is, it just take one situation to make it life or death. Was talking to my buddy who had a 25 foot Parker. He was on the trip with 3 other guys and the boat flipped because it was just the wrong combination of...
Need some ideas on how to attach these gaff holder under my gunnel. I prefer not to drill into my fiberglass hull. I've seen some industrial strength acrylic double sided tape and they are a bitch to get off. Any ideas? Use some 5200?
Went out on Sunday 10/29 out of MDR and went to the bait dock to get some sardines. From a distance I saw all these people wearing yellow and red, I thought maybe it as a kids tour of the bait docks or whale watching trip. As we got closer, it was a bunch of Buddhist monks like having a ceremony...
I have and fished the Mak 16 and also the HXW Raptor.
Mak 16 is kind of a smaller version of the Mak 30. Wide reel, but not as tall. Good drags and I would fish 100 on there easily. If anyone is looking for a Mak 16 SEA, PM me. :D
Now the HXW Raptor. It's a great reel in it's own right...
I bought an Amato center console with a bait tank and no leaning post. I'm looking for a source for a flip seat leaning post or someone to fabricate one on the cheap side OR even better someone has a used one.
Here is the picture of the bait tank.
Phenix Axis rods are very nice too. So are Calstar and Seekers. Pull on them before you buy and find out what works for you. They're kind of like golf clubs, there are tons of model, but not everything works for everyone.
What I don't like about the factory colored spectra is that it makes it stiffer. Also, do you notice after fishing a few trips your spectra is grey like the color of diesel soth?
What I do is use my sharpie to color where I splice the lines, so that I can cut it there next time I splice.
FYI. Your Photobucket service you are using probably free is stop showing your pictures, like no one can see what your boat looks like. Try taking pictures and just upload to BD. Others might be more interests.
No. Luckily or not luckily for me. My tackle box is in the middle and top and every freaking rod is on there after every stop. Opening my tackle box end up as an adventure liking clearing all the hanging branches to get in there.
But in all seriousness. I have a small pack of hooks and...
I have a few of those. Work of art and they are made out of mahogany. One problem is that wood, especially in salt water floats.
I would wait for JRI to come out with his Intruder. It will be worth the wait.
You maybe right. I used to do the ST charters on the PV too and liked fishing with Mark/Greg and especially Chef Jeff's food. He had oil fried french fries on a moving boat. Only boat I've ever seen it.
Pac Star, is not too bad. Wider boat, better bunks. Food is good, not as good as...
Yup. ST Charter used to be on Pac Voyager until some fall out happened to a regular charter. It usually means the charter got disrespected or screwed over, so got moved. I have no info, but you can read into it what you want.
Been on the Senior Tuna boat with Captain Mike many times. Great boat, food is good, lots of space. Bunk rooms of 6 instead of wide open berth.
Mike has put on some epic reds bite every. I take my teen aged daughter on the trip and the boat crew is very helpful.
Just read your original post. You already have a 20 and 30, which are my reels for fly liing. I would get a Mak 50. Why? For the big bait, I mean Man Bait, Salamis and Tubes. When the bait is big and you can work them good. Why torture yourself.
One of the final thing I'd like to say is. After you do enough of these trips, it's not so much about the big fish. It's about seeing old friends and relaxing. It's the rookie like I was at one time that wants to go nuts and catch everything and anything more than anyone else...
JRI - Jerry Intruder - After wahoo beating.
Doctor John. Thank you John for loaning me the iPhone charging cable.
Louie Louie :)
Michael - If I ever assault a house, I would want you in the front.
Captain Ken Buzzell
Rocky "Reel Master" Rocchi
Ricks giveaways. Everyone got these.
Phil and Michael
Max and Romam
Paul "long shore man"
Sharon and Jerry and Paul "Norcal"
Louie Louie, Jim Evans and Max relaxing on the deck going up hill.
Charter Master Rick Ozaki and Jim Issac "park ranger"
Yup. Missed the XM radio and your iPad to see where the heck we were. Was nice fishing/drinking with you. :D
Good luck on the trip. And get ready to drink some buds and smoke a big cigar.
Yup. The back deck with nice drink and cigar and no place to go is very relaxing and...
Well another year goes by and another trip in the books. I've been fishing Rick Ozaki's charter now for 7 years... My buddy Max who I got into LR fishing has now been on 4 of these 16 dayer and now considered a LR veteran.
I guess the part of the excitement is...
We were on a trip when it was his 70th or 80th birthday and we had a cake for him. He gave a nice speech on his history about being in interment camp and how he came to the US. I heard he owned a good chunk of Balboa Island in New Port.
Some really good ones.
One year, I was out of town in Las Vegas for 3 weeks working and drove back the day before leaving for my 15 day trip on the Intrepid and packed at night.
Packed everything tackle wise, rods, reels and cloths.
Then load up on the boat on the day of the trip and I was...
I've have to be honest with everyone. I'm sure at one point or another we've all been "That Guy" sometimes even without even knowing. My example, on one of those day of multiple travel days. Me and my buddy got hammered on tequila shots. Me more then my buddy. :D So that afternoon (yes, we...
So true. One of the tricks of getting bit is to not be in tangles. :)
I've only personally experienced it one time where I was in a tangle and got bit. Boy does that clear the tangle real fast. Watch your fingers!!!!
Welcome aboard. Like people are saying. I wouldn't worry about tackle and hooks and such. You can get that from the boat.
What I would though is bring a couple of spools of 100 and 130 fluorocarbon leader. That stuff the boat sometimes runs out of. The rest, the boat will set you up and...
It all depends on what kind of fish you're targeting. And as someone said, any rod can be a rail rod.
I have the original GUSA 70XH rods. For YT to 50 lbs it's great. For normal Lupe fishing with 50 lbs lines, not a problem. Last time I was there before the closure, 50-60lbs YFT was the...
Rodless. Sorry to hear about the trip.
Each charter group is different. They have their goals and plans and backup plans.
But 5 yellowtail for 4 days of fishing is like WOW.
Driving from Clarion back to SD and you can only find 5 YT......
There was this one dude on the Excel. He was a old friend of Bill. Dude would smoke inside of the stateroom and the smoke would drift through the ventilation to other staterooms. We report it to the captain and the captain had a talk with him. Next day, same shit....
With fishing these short leaders, I mean like 5 to 25 feet for cows, something has to be the shock absorber. The leader is short so the stretch there is minimal. The spectra barely stretches, so that is also minimal. Now you then add a rod too stiff with a small hook and then you have a good...
I have the Axis 720x3 and x4. 3x is a good 100lb rod like people are saying. Kind of same bend as a Calstar 770xxh and weight. The 4x is more like the 770xxxh and weight the same too.
If you have ever pulled on a Phx Hybrid 3x, then the Axis 3x is more stiffer, but not as light.
Thanks Bushman and Fishy. We shall see. Still time to go back and forth. You never know until you are down there.
I've been down there long enough. Hot one day and then cold the next. Two years ago it was dead... Then the day before we left, the life came back to the bank. Little tuna...
Pretty cool story. You never know what's on the other side of the line until you can see it.
Last trip, I hooked a shark on the side of the gill slits. It fought like a huge tuna and when we saw where we hooked it, we knew why.
I'm trying to cut down on the quantity of rigs I bring for my trip. :D What I noticed is that I don't even use them all.
So on the wahoo rigs. How many should I take?
It's a Raider charter, so I mainly use Raiders.
1 - Saltiga 40 LD - Raider
2 - Saltiga 40 LD - Raider
Well another year has passed by and it is that time again for the Rick Ozaki Avet/Seaguar/Raider 16 dayer on the Indy. Rick's trip always has tons of give aways and raffles lots of Avet reels. I haven't won one in about 5 years. Rick did you see that? ;)
This year is going to be...
Looks like they hit Marlins on the lower banks.
We traveled most of the morning before we arrived at our first destination. Hit some fish on the sonar right on the edge of the Bank, got the anchor down, and had zero current. Within a few minutes we had number of striped marlin in...
It can change at anytime. We were on one trip one year, it was good fishing then turned really dead in the middle of the trip. Then the last day, you can see these little tuna jumping all over the place and then the big fish moved in.
Good luck on your trip.
Doesn't sound good for Rodless.
From the Intrepid site.
We are online again, our wifi signal dropped for the better part of day. Fishing for us was very slow yesterday and we made the decision to take off and look...
Or blind luck. :)
I've seen people throw out an almost dead bait and get the big one.
One time, I saw a guy go for grouper and caught a big one.
Sometimes luck plays a huge part. But not in Rodless case. :D
I know that many of you troll with big reels in Hawaii. :)
I have a near new condition Penn 70VS converted to 70VSL. That is an additional $120 in parts to convert the low gear from 1.4:1 to 1:1, which makes this reel a winch. I still have the 1.4:1 low gear and will also include...
I have a near new condition Penn 70VS converted to 70VSL. That is an additional $120 in parts to convert the low gear from 1.4:1 to 1:1, which makes this reel a winch. I still have the 1.4:1 low gear and will also include that.
Reel has been recently fully serviced and the reel is...
I want to give another shout out to Ed at Okuma. Another great service and follow through.
I asked for a reel clamp for my Mak 10 and for some reason the clamp didn't show up. After a few exchanges of email with Ed. I finally got the clamp this weekend. The USPS was trying to deliver to the...
I tie it using the Rodless method. I use two overhand knot and do 11 up and 11 down and as people are saying the tool to tighten the knot is key. Wet it and also do a nice steady pull and not a jerky one. I've caught 200+ lber on 130 premier and the knot barely moved.
1. Hooks. Ask the boat what size to bring. Only need about 25 to 50. I use the Mustad circles and 7/0 and 8/0 are for sardines.
2. Flourocarbon 100 and 130 about two spools of each. Tie a Tony Pena knot and forget wind on. :D
3. Jigs or Bombs. About 1/2 a dozen.
Rest, just buy them from...
I just came back from the Big Island recently and heard the term VOG for the first time.
The guys living there, what is your experience? Is it overrated or is it the real deal on health issues?
Long time ago on the Q105. I asked Brian Simms about the alpha and other spots at the rocks. Brian told me actually it all depends on the way the current is flowing and which way the boat is lining up. In other words all depends on the condition.
At HB. There are high spots on the bank and...
Again, I would work the Cardio. Be able to do the drops and wind and wind as fast as possible and keep doing it again.
Also one of the things with the flashlight is that you can be at the side of the boat and don't need to keep running to the light to charge.
Only problem is you have a...
I've caught a fair share on 100# premier too. Not as many as Fishybuzz though. :D
I would say, use the heaviest line you can to get bit. Like in the early morning grey light, there is no need to use 100 when they can't see it. I made that mistake the last trip and lost the fish when the line...
Ever see the leader after a fight. The end near the hook turned a bit more translucent and that is where I believe is the weak spot. With the short leader to spectra and spectra with very minimal stretch. Something has to give and the end of the leader does the most stretching. So 130 would...
Two of the best jig fisherman I know. They don't use or need the light. Look at the current intrepid report and there is a fisherman named Dale. He fishes hard and works that jig fast and a great multiple time with persistence. Me after about 4 drops I'm dead tired.
Another fisherman I know...
I am from the Mainland and coming to beautiful Big Island on the week of the 1/16th.
I am considering moving there when I retire and looking to fish while I am there. Anyone have an opening for a single angler with no tackle :) For Tuesday 1/17 or Wednesday 1/18? I will be staying...
I'm considering moving to Kailua-Kona in the near future and will get a boat on a trailer. Was thinking something in the 22 to 24 foot class.
I've read that that the drop off is right outside of Kona and boats start trolling after leaving the harbor.
Question is how far away is the...
I just picked up all my reels from Ed today at Okuma. Every one of the reels serviced and I also got spare parts like small screws. Got the reel way ahead of time and Ed was awesome at communication with the service.
Thanks again Ed.
Yup you did, thanks for all the help. :)
Dropped off my 1 - Mak 50 SEA, 1 - Mak 50, 2 x Mak 20 SEA, 1 - Mak 20 Gold, 1 - Mak 16 SEA, 1 - Mak 16, Mak 10, Mak 8.
Can you tell I love my Okuma Makaira reels?
I apologize if I am posting on the LR board for a sale item. But people who are looking for this are on this board. Moderators, please delete if you feel inappropriate.
For those guys who have the cross bar on their ATD 50. Here is your chance to go topless in a PG...
I know that the Makairas warranty is 5 years. But I remember that Okuma would service them free also for 5 years. Can someone from Okuma verify for me? I want to drop off like 9 Makaira for service tomorrow. :D
One of the interesting point on LR trips is that you are with 20 or so anglers and the crew for 14 to 16 days straight in a small space. I call it summer camp for adults, but one of the things is in those 14 to 16 days. You can rub the people the wrong way or they can do the same to you. You...
Avets have some heavy spools, but they are built like tanks, I do like one reel though. The Avet SDS 3 speed, which I use for my jigging. The middle gear is nice.
I used to arm Rodless and now Rodless has his own gear and then some. And my other buddy has his own stuff now too. So going...
For those guys who have the cross bar on their ATD 50. Here is your chance to go topless in a PG rated way. It takes about 5 minutes to change the frame.
I have an almost new ATD 50 topless frame. I had accurate put the new frame on and I never used the reel again. Greased the...
Yes. The spool shaft was hanging on the drag plates the right side of the spool. I just found the rough spots and sanded it down a little and then tried again and again until things were smooth enough.
Is this your first trip? If so, I would borrow from the boat.
On the Indy, I believe they give you like three rigs for loaners. One 50 and one 30 and one wahoo rig.
But... If you must have your own at a minimum, I would suggest these as a minimum.
Kite. Use the boats. Only draw back is...
Ok fixed. I sanded down the shaft where it was rubbing on the other parts with 300 grit sandpaper and then polished with 600 grit sandpaper. The reel is working great and added some TSI oil and that spool spins forever.
I like to fix my own reel, since when I'm on my trip, I have to fix...
I've had this recurring problem since I got the reel and I've sent it in for service a few years back and the problem is still there. Worse part was they stripped some a screw and then just sent me the reel with the screw wedged in. And the first time I used the reel on my 16 day...
I bought it through trophy tackle. John Nappo is on the long range board and I would highly recommend his company.
I waited like a year and finally gave up and purchased a Daiwa saltiga 40 2 speed. Then being a tackle ho. Saw that John had one in stock. I bought one and no, didn't get a free rod.
Usually before my trip, I prep the reels and use Cals grease inside the reel. And some how or another, I usually get grease all over my hands. To get the grease off a bit and also protect the reel, I just rub it all over the surface of the reel. Works great at repelling water on the surface...
Yup, learned the lesson hard. About 15 years ago, my buddy and i trailered my boat on a Friday night after work to Shelter Island and launched at 10:00pm at night. We picked up bait and left the harbor and set the GPS to points south. The night was moonless and it was pitched black. I told...

Here is the compatibility list.

You have to remember that it's great to have a really stiff rod, but you have to remember that with a short leader something has to give. The rod has to flex or your line has to stretch a bit, even more so on 100lbs line.
I have here a hard to find Accurate ATD Soft Case. They used to sell/give these with the ATD reel to display and protect your investment. The case will fit any reel upto 50 Wide. The case is in perfect condition.
Reel not included, but PM me if you're interested in a topless ATD...
Also one additional thing of special note. The Indy took really awesome care of our fish. Captain Matt said they figured out a way to keep all the fish RSW for the entire trip, No more FISH Popsicle!!!!
From what I heard, the Indy had a new upgraded RSW system just installed on the boat. And...
Just got back this morning from Rick Ozaki's annual 16 dayer on the Independence, sponsored by Avet, Seaguar and Raider lures.
First part is for the guys who are about to leave with some tips.
1. Sabiki, bring the really really small ones. One of the hot bait was the tubes...
Oh, forgot. Fred Hall show used to have 1 dollar cutters and needle nose pliers. Those are soaked in Corrosion X and then loaned out to my friends. :) They last quite a while actually. I still keep them in my tackle box still.
I had a brand new EX50 3 speed in gunmetal dropped shipped to me from Trophy tackle to my home in LA and it arrived on Saturday. I saw no reason a reel needs to go to NY and then back to LA to just have the spectra put on.
The reel is nice and beautiful and in good shape, but there...
Who's crying? It's just a thread about fishing man. Chill. It's not a man hood contest behind a computer screen.
It's about some fishing reel which I thought would be out before my 16 dayer this year, given that I gave a freaking deposit before last years 16 dayer trip.
I just had my...
Beauty of this charter is it's sponsored by Rick Ozaki the distributor of Raider Jigs. Every year, He gives each of us 4 to 6 Raiders as a give away. I have been adding them to my tray and most of all of them in my tray still. :)
Also me being a super cheapo. I used to use all my Raiders...
Well. Seems we can't forget the alcohol. :) Everyone has their poison. I go to Costco and buy a jug of Johnny Walker Black 1.75L and now with other friends, I'll probably have to load up two bottles.
I usually pack the last minute and this year I have been actively trying to prune down. I...
My trip is about 11 days away and tonight I just fished wrapping two Phenix Axis 720 4X. One for me and one for my new roomie. JL quit fishing, so I had to find a new roomie.
So this is probably my last minute prepping tradition. Buy new blanks and let it sit almost a year and...
I tried the clear nail polish and it worked great. Placed the sticker (still need to figure out how to not get fingerprints on it) and placed clear nail polish all over the edges and let it dry while at work and came back home and coated.
Thanks for the tip.
Now that I'm wrapping the Phenix 3x and 4x, I need help with the best method in placing the factory label which came with the blank.
With the coating heating up after you mix it, I've always had the label lift. What is the pro trick? :)
I went to the Okuma booth as I promised and not like some of the other guys, there were only a few customers there. The older gentleman manning the booth asked if I had any questions. I asked about the Andros and he immediately said the 12SIIa is right here. Grabbed it from the other Okuma...
I'm about to wrap some Phenix Axis 720 4X I got last year and I was chatting with my friend and was told that some were breaking.
I've heard of at least 3 accounts from people of this happening. One just from setting the drag. Some they saw them break in person.
I am hoping it was...
So I'm going to be upfront. I am a lazy bastard and don't strip my spectra and wash every trip. If I'm lucky, I'll remove the line once every 4 years. :-D
This is for my Cow reels by the way.
I polish my spool using Kiwi neutral shoe polish per Jerry Brown and I've never had any...
Thank you for the reply and I fully understand that it's tough to build a good product and I applaud Okuma for not letting an inferior product out, but speaking for myself. I just wanted some realistic timeline. I gave my deposit last March in hope of getting the reel sometime last...
I fished one of the prototypes too and liked it a lot.
My point on this isn't the reel itself. I have Talica, Saltist LD, Tiburon 2 speed etc etc. I need another reel like Fishybuzz needs another new setup.
But my point is how Okuma dealt with the situation. In general IMO the gaining of...
I'll have to ask about the free rod to the company I put the pre order on.
And yes, I can just ask what the answer is and respectfully go away. I personally don't care if they make the reel or not at this point.
But Okuma went from making reels which seized upon first exposure to to salt...
Well I will make it a point to go to the Fred Hall show and when I see the biggest crowd at their booth. Probably on Saturday at noon, I'll ask in a very loud voice. Where is the reel that you promised people almost an year ago and what's this game with some freaking small reel? Don't want to...
I like it. It's your trip. It's your gear. Your fish. Your responsibility. :)
Like someone wrote, we've all done the long soak and need to wind the spectra back tighter. What I do is use my gloved left hand and use two fingers to put tension on the line. I also try to angle the line a...
I would be totally bummed, but the way that Alan760 and David handled it is total class.
Salt water is a tough environment and things break and in hindsight, I would rather turn home instead of having to call the Coast Guard or Navy to come and help a disabled boat.
Thanks for the clarification. Again, I realize that bring a new product out is tough in the beginning and it takes time to perfect. I've had bad batch of another major brand and it broke like crazy. Probably lost at least 4 bites when the fish bit and took off, I set the drag and...
I have a penn 70vs sleeved and 1:1 gear which I use as my kite reel. The reel held 1200 yards of 130 JB hollow and 300 yards of 200 JB hollow. When using the rig with big hooks like a flyer or squid, I fish it with 48lbs at strike. I've only gotten to maybe the first 100 yards of 130 JB. And...
My only experience with TT and it was 3 years ago when TT was first coming out.
I bought an Avet HXW from Charkbait in 2012 and they had a deal where the first 300 yards of Toro Tamer spectra was free. So I bit and asked them to send me 700 yards of 100 hollow spectra on an empty spool as I...
I have to admit that I am a so so wahoo fisherman. There is something about getting my toes stepped on a few times and having both my big toes nail turn black and fall off has something to do with that.
I fish with Rick Ozaki and there are some great wahoo fisherman and having said that...
For sardines and mac/salami. I ring my own hooks so, I like these and they're cheap and can get them in boxes of 25. They're inline and not kirbed. Kirbed hooks help in the angler hooking the bait. I have been using the older 39950BLN since 2005 and when they made the new version I used...
This is my annual trip with Rick on the Indy. Rick's giveaways are second to none and the group of anglers are some of the best I've ever fished with. Lots to learn and lots of drinking and poker and fun in the sun. I highly recommend joining the group on the nice wide Indy.
Someone PM'ed me and said that the reels were shipping. When I asked Trophy tackle who I ordered the reel from what it seems a year ago to check, John said that he has a order coming from Okuma but nothing on the 12's yet.
I don't have a 770XH, but had a friend use it for 100lbs at Hurricane/Buffer Zone and it was too flexible.
This reminds me of a story when I first started doing the LR thing and my question was what is the ideal 40 lbs rod? The general consensus was the Calstar 765XL was the best 40 lbs rod...
John, sorry to hear about your finger. Ouch....
Wear gloves if you can, takes a bit getting used to but it's nice to not cut your hands up. Clean your hands all throughout the day with soap and water, I usually do that on piss breaks. :) At night, clean the wound and put liquid bandaid on...
My buddy JL had an similar issue with a brand new Mak 16 SEA too. He actually had two 16's and one was fine, the other one had issues like you are describing. We dropped it off at the factory and they fixed and shipped it back to him. I'll ask him tomorrow what Okuma said was wrong with it...
Thanks for the update. It would have been greatly appreciated sooner then later and all the speculation which came because of no words.
Hope the production issues are resolved soon and we see the reel.
So I see iCast is almost over.
Where is the the Andros 12SIIa?
I thought it was the long shore man strike. Then I thought it was they needed to modify parts.
Where is it?
I preordered the reel in January of this year and it's 6 months later.
Can anyone from Okuma update us loyal...
I have the 700xh and 770xxh xxxh. It reminds me of on my first lr trio to Alijos. Everyone all said that 765xl was the ideal 40 50 lbs rod. Yes it is if your catching yt with the rod. On a 120lbs yft it's a noodle.
One year on the intrepid. I saw a guy hook a cow on a stronger Ron than the...
When I use long top shots like for yoyo. I have the reel and fill it about 1/2 way with spectra and pack the rest with mono. At this point you're fishing mono most of the time and only get into the spectra if it's a big fish.
I have an excellent condition and this one is the older reliable shift mechanism proven Penn 50SW 2 speed by Cofe in San Diego.
The reel is also filled with 500 yards of 130 lbs Jerry Brown solid spectra and can hold about 100+ yards of 100 lbs mono.
The reel also has the Reel Color...
Not me. I laugh at him. :)
I told Jim a long time ago, he should write a fishing book. You know there are lots of experts who write about fishing and technique and all that. Jim being a fantastic writer, I told him he should write a book from a point of view of a common fumbling self...
Every LR boat I've been on had no issues with bringing your own beer, water or liquor. The crew makes money on the tip and not selling stuff on the boat. A few of the boats, they don't even carry water to sell, so you won't have to worry.
I have an excellent condition Penn 50VSW blueprinted by Cofe in San Diego. The reel was worked to freespool and also the drag was enhanced.
The reel is also filled with 800 yards of Jerry Brown spectra which is worth $100 or more.
The reel also has the Reel Color Handle and...
Hi. No its not the same reel. When I bought 3 of these Tn40N reels. I sold 1 of them to my buddy JL. So this is 1 of 3.
On the 3m sheet. It's self sticking and can be peeled off. It's commercial product is 3m clear car bra.
You're going to need the following:
15-20lbs mono rig. This is going to be for calicos and what ever is in the kelp beds. Have some small egg sinkers to get the bait down. Some swim bait stuff.
30lbs to 40lbs rig for live/dead squid rig for WSB and YT. This is mono mostly.
40 to 50lbs...
No hardware issues or Malware or Virus. Reason I got it for my kid. I just wiped the Solid State Drive and installed brand new install of Yosemite with Microsoft Office for MAC installed.
Did I mention it has a Solid State Drive and boots fast and things start up fast.
David was good enough to loan me 3 of the prototype reels for my trip in March. They worked really well and cast great and can crank in those heavy raiders really well. I had one guy on our trip try it and after finding out what the retail price is, he ended up selling his other reels on...
I had one of their pro staffer loan me a few of the Andros with the high speed gears for my last trip. If you're waiting to use it for wahoo, it's going to be good. It was smooth and cast really well and had enough speed to move that jig through the water. I am waiting on mine to arrive any...
Yes, I would love to get away and turn it all off and that's not the point here. It's really nice to tune out. Heck now we don't even have Direct TV on the Indy.
But all jobs are different, if your boss said if you're going to be totally out of touch for 16 days, I can't let you go on...
Yup Exactly. And yes, the method worked, I hooked two large fish with this method and brought one to the boat. The other fish, I hooked it about 500 yards out and the Tuna just took off and I eventually pulled the hook. Probably should have lessen the drag.
Also with the Man Bait fishing...
Dave. I used to stick a 7691 through the back of the skippie or small yft and they would eventually die from the blood loose. With this method, I fished one small YFT for 2 hours and after no bites was able to release it. Maybe better conservation method.
On hooking the bait. Since the...
Paul. The picture is just an example. What I was doing was I used a 10/0 7691 and the trailer hook was a Owner Gorilla factory 4/0 ringed hook. The ring on the Owner is large and thin enough, I could take a plier and bend the ring into an oval shape to get past the barb of the 7691...
Totally very useful at the right condition. Current is going one way and the flylined baits are going that way. And the Wind going the other, so the ballon will take the bait out away from the flyliners. That's the right way and time to do it. When you're going the same direction as teh...
When we were unloading the fish on Friday. There was a huge knot head just hanging around. Man, better watch out.
(Reuters) - A man was injured on Sunday after he was pulled into the water by a sea lion that...
Yup. It was still fun and I will be waiting for next years trip. It wasn't all bad and some of the things were still fun. I'm sure me and Max my new roomie will be back. Also Ed and Michelle feed us like kings and made sure we all ended up fatte.
Now to the better side of the post. Here are...
Agreed with Captain Jeff. I've had some of the best trips on the Indy with Jeff at the wheel. I've seen him in some bad moods when he pulled his shoulder muscle, but he always worked very hard.
Thanks for the invite, I'm still thinking of going back on Rick's charter as I've had the best...
The Captain actually said lots of this without telling us they changed plans, others were told during the fall last year. I told him I'd write up instructions to stop the vampire stuff. I'm trying to figure out if this is happening on other boats.
Ok. But why the change from last year? Last year the same people brought the same phones and same number of laptops. Last year the service was usable with same amount of people using the service on board.
Is it possible that they changed providers? Like we would switch from Verizon to ATT...
It's nothing to do what you're talking about. My bosses used to freak out when I told them I would be out of touch from work for 16 whole days. Jobs are different and sometimes a few emails can get some amazing things done. After I told them I can get email, they were happy as bugs in a rug...
I'm not sure that I mentioned one of the deckhands decided not to show up on the day we left. I'm not sure how it works, but I would say you would have some backup or someone you can call to do an emergency fill in. As my CFO told me on things like this, it's a management problem. Have to...
I have a factory Super Seeker Rod and noticed the ceramic insert had cracked off. I believe Seeker is now in Oxnard? If I take the rod there, will the replace the guide?
Their website is being built, so I can't see a contact info there.
Nah. I too have limited vacation days, and if I can do some work. My boss will let me have a few freebie days.
They need to tell everyone the edictate on using the WIFI on the boat. Every computer, every iPad, every phone device is constantly using bandwidth without you even doing anything...
So heading to Hurricane banks. Since it's a 18 hour ride to the banks and it was still before lunch, we decided it was drinking time. A bunch of the guys sat out in the back deck and proceeded to drink. Jack and Coke, beer, lemon cello which Jeff made and you name it. Even some apple...
I would say a skb large box with rocket launchers and you can fit three on the shelf.. The skb will also fit in the middle and bottom shelf.
I myself use a wfo large bag and can barely get to the top without putting my bag out a bit.
Well here is the summary of the report. The trip wasn't epic by any means, but it was still fun being away from work and bull shitting with old friends and new friends.
As usual my buddy Jeff Liu from Alameda drove down to the house before we were to sleep on the boat and arrived at...
Nah. It wasn't like that. The owner of the boat was driving and he said that the system was being overwhelmed.
He did say not to post too much info as the seiners read and then will come and wrap things.
We just came back from the Indy 16 dayer and the Internet was unusable to browse websites for sure. Email was barely usable.
I heard from anglers from the last fall that most of the boats moved to a new provider and that things are not going well.
Last year, the Internet was slow...
We returned from the trip this morning and had an interesting trip. The fishing was so so, but the fun was all there. Some new things to try out and fish.
We had really bad Internet access which was unusable to get to website, so was unable to do day to day updates.
