So cal Offshore Boat Question on size needed for offshore fishing

There is a short list of Albi predecessors from Radon, Radoncraft, Greenough etc that all fall into the same categories. Small, seaworthy, self-bailing, workboats with capacities well outside the "norm" for a small skiff. Size is more relevant to how many guys it can fish, not what it can fish.
  302. scwafish

So cal Offshore Boat Question on size needed for offshore fishing

Length isn't the real issue..its the hull. There are a few 17-18 footers I'd take anywhere. There are some 26 footers I wouldnt take on a lake in bad weather.

A big picture type of question....about boats

The bracket itself is pretty ez and straight forward. Repairing the transom and refitting the boat was another story. But I went a little crazy. In the end I am super happy with the product and unlike other boats I've had I know every square inch of the rig and how and why everything works. I...

A big picture type of question....about boats

Radoncraft was the precursor to Davis boats. I refitted my 18 with the bracket and outboard as well as the Cortez hardtop and leaning post.

A big picture type of question....about boats

I was in the same "boat" so to speak. I wanted something that would work for chasing albacore but also be suitable for dragging the kids on an innertube at the lake. Very happy with my choice. My 18 foot Radoncraft is ez to tow, fishes amazing, super seaworthy, and the roomy cuddy is big...

I just LOVE these boats. If I ever buy a "new" boat these will be on my shortlist for sure.
  314. scwafish

    Roplene

I totally get the appeal. All of the same reasons I love my fishing kayak apply. My only concern is actual long term reliability/repairability. If you look around as you travel you'll see lots of old derilict boats sitting around. To poorly made or designed to stand the test of time or too low...
  315. scwafish

    Roplene

No, and I don't know that I would either...at least not yet. I love the sound of it, but a lot of 'lifetime' plastics products regularly used in my business have ended up having the "lifespan" of a hamster and not that of a tortoise.

Albion is my closest port. Timed the weather right but BARELY made the tide. Weather was mostly nice except for a bunch of steep chop near Arena. We ran south about 20 miles to cross the border into open rock fishing. We put 4 limits of fat lings on the boat and then pulled our crab pots...

Electrical issues. Any help would be appreciated

Unless it has been recently rewired I think your just asking for a series of disappointing days on the water. The wiring on my 1988 was overdue and I am 30 years "newer". Rewiring a basic skiff with an OB is no big deal once you do it.

    The 31 Bertram Build

I was making a lame sarcastic joke. Making the floor supports that way is GENIUS and should allow for ez servicing of under deck hardware. Well done.
  329. scwafish

    Another Radon?

The deck had diamond tread molded into the deck but years if commercial halibut weights had it beat to piss. I considered lot of things but tried a test patch of Kiwi grip and was blown away. His everything while adding a nice consistent nonskid. I love it. Works good, looks good, ez to touch up.

    Davidson vs Defiance

Don designed them as well for his Radoncraft joint venture with Innovator, then Harold bought the molds and built them to a higher standard. I wish Harold had built mine, but its 34 years old and ready for another 34. Hard to bitch about that!!! I love that modern Davis parts bolt right on...
  453. scwafish

    Davidson vs Defiance

One of the bigger Davidson hulls with the long cabin from a RH would be the most insane west coast boat ever. The hull is WAY deeper, there should be ample room to make a boat that sleeps 4.

    Non-removal advice?

Any small grinder with a flapwheel or sanding disc will do that job. But it would be much easier and plenty strong to use 5200 and screws. Then when the cantalever fails theyll be easier to replace.

For a small skiff around here its tough to beat a Montauk or Outrage. They ride like poo but will take a lot of slop for their size. I have seen both WAY offshore on tuna days. Arimas and C Dory are also nice for small cuddys but they wont come close to fitting in a garage.

For me it was about the best way to spread the load. 100 gallons of fuel pounding and sloshing is a lot of mojo. Foam spreads the load over the entire tank, mounting points don't. Water is the only potential issue, but if you do it right its a non-issue.

Foam or not to foam. My tank was also in foam, and had some serious corrosion, but it was 25 years old! Anything on a well used boat that lasts 25 years seems pretty good to me. After looking at how most modern first tier boat install theirs, here's how I did mine...

That red one has been for sale for ages. I am sure you make a deal. I personally think the 24x8 hull is not the best.

WTB 21'-22' Radon, Radoncraft, Anderson or...

Small ones are hard to find. It took me about a year, but you should be able to find a nice Cortez in your price range. I also know where there is a cherry 22 for a great price but its on the east coast :(

Doh! I had a similar issue on mine. I ended up installing some drains to the bilge so if water gets in, you have some way of getting it out. Sean

    kayak advice desperitely needed

A FnD will work, but it is a pig of a boat and an ancient design. At 14 you should get something narrower and lighter. Lots of good things have happened in kayaks since the FnD was designed, wait for something better.

Outlawman- Here is the basic layout.... The rear deck is 4.5 feet x 8 feet, pretty good for a small skiff. The hatch in the back is a fish hold. It is where the motor would be if it was an I/O. It is BIG. I an 6'1" 215 # and I can easily fit in there. I had to get in there to fix it...

The helm and cuddy are nearly identical to a Davis Cortez. The hard top, supports, and leaning post are all used Cortez parts. They are all a direct bolt on.

    Tackle storage

It took two about 2 weeks from the time I emailed my sketch til it was sitting on my porch...pretty fast! It was $530.00. I considered getting two "off the shelf units" from a number of places but they were all about $200 ea and didn't provide nearly the same storage so I splurged. No, my...

Thanks everyone, its been a LONG itchy journey getting to from here... to here... to here... I really wanted to repower a classic, but it has turned more into a complete rehab. I have done all of the work myself, or with the help of my kids and friends. I have learned a ton. I should...

Thanks gentlemen. I am happy to see this project getting close to completion. Its only 18 feet, but its should be a pretty versatile package. Hopefully the tuna are close up here like they were last year...

    Tackle storage

I am rehabbing a 1987 Radoncraft 18. I recently bought a USED Cortez leaning post and have been bringing it back to life. The stock Davis tackle lockers had been hi-jacked... Since this post was going to eat up a lot of deck space on my little skiff I decided to maximize its utility and I...

    gel coat or poly paint????

Gelcoat is more viscous and will have some residual orange peel no matter what. You can thin it with products like duratec to improve the finish, but if you want it SMOOTH and glossy you have to color sand and buff.

    gel coat or poly paint????

I re-did a bunch of gelcoating this past summer. Its marginally harder than paint but no big deal.
