    "Boat Length of Mono"

I have found a little bit longer topshot gets me more bites with BFT and in PV with YFT. Certainly not a boat length, and, in fact, zero mono! I’m just saying what works for me. Since changing to a 25-30 foot topshot of straight FC, I’m getting way more bites than I was with 10-15 feet. And...

That's fine and dandy you like the Excel, but why the Leaking Lena comment about the 2 and 3 day boats? This time of year, they have poured blood, sweat and tears into their vessels. I find them to be in great shape. Any particular vessel you know of we should avoid?

    UC VIPER

Luckily I am able to look past the bull$hit and get back to the original question. I find it a very versatile rod, and fish anywhere from 80-130# topshot on it with no issues negative that I know of. Here is a shot of me, 80#, putting the wood to a 175, Using 80# line.

    Soft Steel Leader/Topshot Sale!!!

I don't know if you've noticed it over the last 3 years, but I am finding it tougher and tougher to get a bite. I find it very difficult to get a bite on rope, and Soft Steel Ultra is kinda like poor man's fluorocarbon. Perhaps my skills are waning, wouldn't surprise me.

Is it possible to keep big baits alive on sport fishing boats?

For the life of me, I can't understand why you are so obsessed with this idea. It has so many limitations, is so far fetched, why bother? From my working on the Shogun on MB Aquarium trips, if you empty out a fairly large bait tank, you can get 10-12 of them in it. They might live the long run...

So, my brain works different than yours concerning a 130# setup, that doesn't mean I'm wrong. It's all personal preference. I fish 200 on my 80, but haven't brought an 80 in 12 years. Reel decisions for a longer trip....

I do, I do. Granted, it’s filled with hundred pound spectra, but I fish 130# top shot on it, and knowing 100# spectra breaks well over that, I consider it a 130# reel.

I'm going to agree with you on that. Although an 80 with 1 to 1 ratio in low is pretty sweet, you actually have more cranking power with a 50 sized reel. But this one here I'm wondering how you got that much line on. I got about 830 yards of 130# hollow, and there is no room for another 100...

    Nomad DTX report

On my April trip, I had trouble with it staying in the water unless I was running the lure long in the middle. Just a quick little report from our recent 16 day trip on the Excel. Nomad DTX report

I've been using one for two long trips now, seem to hold up well if you ask me. When they get ready to bat the wahoo, I try to pull the leader in such a way the lure doesn't get smacked. I don't think I've ever owned such a hot wahoo trolling lure- not affiliated, just a happy customer.

What angle are you working on?

Why cut and splice at a hundred yards? Average trips I always dump 200 yards using a line counter, if it was a real long soak trip, or lots of needlefish, run ins with cutting edge hooks, marlin, dorado, triggerfish, etc. Spectra has a lot of enemies. 163. wahoodad

    ViSX16 or Tac20ii

No, I filled a Mak 16, and partial filled a Mak 20, with 50# Threadlock. It breaks at 92#, I certainly can't break it. Haven't caught a big one on it yet, so still in trial mode. Gotta be careful, not much abrasion resistance. Just a stealth rig when it's tough to get a bite.

Oh, and BTW, you must mean the PRIOR Excel 5 day trip, because the latest one fished Uncle Sam Bank on a 5 day!
  222. wahoodad

    Excel or Intrepid??

So, the Excel sucks because they stayed local? Do you have any idea where the Intrepid just fished their last trip? I saw it in a photo on a 3/4 day Ventura boat. So they suck too? My, what is this world coming too, boats staying local?

    Aaron no longer on Shogun?

Agreed, he is really a great captain. I had a gnarly infection the whole trip, didn't get to fish a whole lot, so today I went to my doctor to get this crap outta me. He asked who the skipper was, and said he's known Russ a long time, raved about his skills. I have a very fishy doctor, we met...

As Luke stated, Tyler is top notch. Jed came from the Polaris Supreme, where he ran a lot of trips. He doesn't want to be top dog, I can relate. Excellent crew member. Making Bait

Doesn't matter, the tackle is one of the concessions the crew get to make money on. Do you think your local tackle store will loan you a few sabikis as long as you bring em back? :D
  232. wahoodad

    Making Bait

Why? You think they get them for free? I've worked on 3 different long range boats, and they pay for them. The crew that is, not the owners.
  233. wahoodad

    Making Bait

Yeah, they charge for them though, and I have plenty. Actually, I'm pretty anal about it, all sorts of sizes and styles of Sabikis, as you never know what size or type bait we will be trying to catch.

Thanks for this thread. I am trying to pack super light for this 5 day, and I didn't have any Sabikis or squid snaggers. I will throw some in. Leaving for 5 on the Shogun at the end of the month. I don't care where we fish, even if its 5 days of non-biting bluefin. Catalina, SCI , SBI, San Nick, whatever. I'm just going fishing.

Just filled my Komodo KDS-463P, loaded it up with 400 yards of JB Line One spectra 40#. Now I'll have room for a decent top shot, of either 20, 30 or 40#. It's brand new, hoping to get me a wahoo on it as my first fish on it.

Check those overhand knots out after catching a big fish. Sorry sir, but I don't think you can get a thousand yards of 130 on a 50, and don't think you can get a thousand yards on a 50W. It's been a long time since I spooled up either model, but I seem to remember 700 on the 50, 825 on the 50W.

The fing The finger tape most used is a product called Flexx-wrap. You can find a similar product in first aid sections at a drug store. But do yourself a favor. When it's brand new, find the end of the tape, pull a little section back off, and double or triple it up and push it back against...

    Nick gets his shot

Finally Nick on the Red Rooster 3 is getting his shot at running the boat. Those of you on the 5 day trip leaving day after Christmas are in for a real treat. This has been a long time coming, he is the real deal, knows the engine room well, and has eyes of an eagle. Good luck Nick, knock em dead!

First post! Hello Fishy, Soda Pop, Wahoodad and all you cool cats of West Coast fishing lore!

I would definitely not buy the stuff on the lists on the websites of each boat. Way too much gear, and it'll get rusty before you ever use some of it. Buy as much as you can from Cabela's if you like, then hit one of the local tackle stores when you get to San Diego. Nothing wrong with the...

No,not really. They gut and gill and chill on the Apollo too. The long range boats that do the gut and gill before dropping em in the rsw taste the same imo. Some boats don't do the gut and gill, and sometimes they are coming on too hot and heavy to do it. But no, tastes the same to me.

    Talica 5O For Cow Tuna?

And the advice I listed I got from Cal himself. He did say he could do some work to change it, but knowing my drag settings I use, and the way I fish, he said he did not need to touch the reel. Fish it right out of the box, just add spectra and water.

    Talica 5O For Cow Tuna?

When I bought my first Mak, Cal (who has done all my previous reels) said I do not need to have any blueprinting done on the drags of the Okuma Makairas. I haven't needed any such work for the whole time I've been fishing them. I do consider myself a serious cow fisherman, thus I am going to...

    Avet or okum?

I have been extremely happy with my Andros 5, haven't caught a hundred pounder on it yet (only a 97 and a 98 at Guadalupe). Bear in mind, it is 4 years old, but I do send it in for service yearly. The Mak 10 or 8 is a great option too.

    Spectra hollow to hollow connections

I need more thing, I don't step splice very often anymore. I put 130# fluorocarbon directly into 80# hollow, never been an issue. only time I step it up is if I can't get the fluorocarbon inside.

    Flatfalls and big tuna

Ok, thanks. Never will be an expert jig and pop guy, but once I rigged a PL68 with a 3foot fluoro leader, with a swivel at the connection, and was told by a very good long range skipper I was defeating the swim of the jig.

Preferred connection for hollow to solid

That is precisely correct, the only hollow was 200# hollow. We really did not have much choice in line size either. 130# solid and 200# hollow was it. Drag the doubled up solid into the hollow 5 feet or so, and a 60# Stas made crimp to secure it. Then, the 200# hollow served as a sleeve for 60#...

    Trinidad TN20a

Well, you are getting plenty of answers on this one. Although I know he's one heckuva good fisherman, I'm going to disagree with my buddy JGray. I don't like casting spectra on a surface iron application. I also feel (JMO) that I lose distance with a narrow reel like a TN 20, and I would use...

Trophy Grouper..... Intrepid with a nice grouper

Yeah, it beat the world record by 15 lbs, but since I'm a rail guy I did not submit. Funny thing was me fighting that one on big gear, and Jeffrey Tedmori ctaching a skipjack on a Barbie rod, complete with LEDs when it took line. Doing the over under with big gear versus toy gear was hilarious.

    Any Andros 12SIIa Fishing Reports?

I buy in bulk, so spectra is a bit less expensive that way, but using 65# at over 500 yards is more expensive than 350-400 yards of 80#. I'm just an armchair QB too, but I have always enjoyed watching the chess game when several boats are out. Bob Sands Tackle/R.P. 15 Day leaving 4-23-16

Personally, I think it's great there will be 5 boats there. Granted, the wahoo get pretty tired of jigs buzzing over their heads, and they become hard to catch. But having coverage is huge. Not losing 18 hours ( or 36 hours if it really sucks) of fishing time driving from the buffer zone...

Oldest Long Ranger... when do I quit?

As much as I would like to die pulling on a 500 pounder (or getting a piece of butt), IMO, that would be a selfish maneuver. If you've ever been on a trip when someone has a serious medical condition, or passes, it is a very sad deal. I have cried both times it happened while I was there...

    sato crimps or not

No, not every long range boat is fully into the Sato crimps. Only the RP, Royal Star, American Angler, and Intrepid that I know of. But that's a fairly strong statement at that don't you think? :-) Lots of ways to skin a cat. Not saying that's the only way. But it sure works for me...

    sato crimps or not

I will teach you soon Matt. It's really simple.
  582. wahoodad

    sato crimps or not

Who is pinching the line? Not me, you must be crimping too hard. I use 2 crimps, Garry Sato says he understands my reasoning why I use 2. You want to use one, go ahead. But most of us that have been crimping a long time use 2!

    Hollow to flouro connection

Does a 12 strand, higher breaking strength spectra have more abrasion resistance than a lower test 16 carrier? I don't think so. I really don't like using 130# hollow for a connector. That's just me, because most brands use a 12 carrier on 130#. As stated many times in this thread, if you...

    Hollow to flouro connection

Early in the game, the only hollow,we had was hollow 200#! We even put 60# mono into the hollow 200#. I was very slow to gauge my spectra down some, Basil told me I should and I was very hard headed about it. Now, no step splice at all, unless I cannot fit the leader material into the hollow...

    Hollow to flouro connection

There is no way a knot will be more hydrodynamic than a hollow connection with FC inserted 6 inches, glued and crimped with Sato crimps, or nub knot, or serve. Yes, my mileage may vary, but my 6 inches inserted is using less FC than you use to tie a Pena knot. Summer and fall trips, lighter...

Without a doubt, add the line. I add line while on trips if I get a good one and it's packed down.
  595. wahoodad

To Add or Not To Add More Spectra???

Question for you Basil: So, we load our spectra on tight, I think I use about 15-16 lbs of drag on my device that holds the spectra for my line winder. And yet, when we fight a fish, we are now winding in with 25-30 lbs of tension. My question is should I be loading under more than 15-16?

To Add or Not To Add More Spectra???

I'm like Jeff, I dump the top 150-200 yards after a trip, throw it away. Then splice in new. I don't step splice at all anymore UNLESS I'm fishing a leader material I cannot fit into my spectra, which is almost all either 80# hollow or 100# hollow. Only my 50 sized reels have 130# hollow on...

    JB 18/18 TRIP OPENINGS

Yeah, go ahead and laugh about their age. But consider these few things: 1st, I would be one of the younger anglers on the trip, and I'm 61! But because of that, they don't have the stamina and there are many times when only a few guys are soaking baits. There have been times where the...

    American Angler vs Independence

Can't go wrong with either one. The Indy carries more bait, while the Angler boasts the best quality RSW (Right there with Royal Star), food is great on both rigs, crew is awesome on both. Lighter load versus more room. Tough choice.
  608. wahoodad

How I Plan to Rig and Fish...

I'm going to have to disagree with that. It might apply to a few gifted anglers, but day in day out, trip in trip out, rail time is key. Every time I think I have those bastards figured out, they show me how little I know.

Bob and Jamie's very preliminary Tac Glue testing

I can just see it, a couple more winds....What do you mean the swivel is at the tip :D Also, can't always count on a nice casting lane to underhand . And I'll bet you I can change topshots as fast or faster than you can tie on a new swivel and leader.
  610. wahoodad

Bob and Jamie's very preliminary Tac Glue testing

Bob and Jamie's very preliminary Tac Glue testing

Yeah, I'm used to 6 inch insertions, not 12 :D (Never let her see a tape measure) Seriously though, sometimes I end up going in further than the 6 inches, only because I used to go in 5 feet, and I'll be flapping my gums and I end up in further than I wanted to be. I simply glue the whole...

    Cedros 12. Braid or mono

I would fill the reel with braid, probably 65# solid or 80# solid. Leave room for 75-100 yards of 50# mono. After the initial sting of the spectra purchase, you will save money in the long run by only filling with the small amount of mono each top shot.

    Getting Spectra Spooled

There are right ways to remedy problems this, and wrong ways. This is a prime example of a wrong way! Hide behind your keyboard, and talk a bunch of crap about a good business. Burning the T shirts in a fire pit is the icing on the cake of childishness. Grow up dude. If you have a problem...

That is correct. Imagine this if you would. We deny the rules, head on down on one gen set. Get down to the buffer zone, start catching fish, and the other generator die.
