Saltwater WTF do I do now?

It's sorta easy. But also kinda hard. :-). First, get some squid jigs. Then go to somewhere with squid. I heard right outside Shishole near the boat ramp is good. I usually go along Alki. Ferris Wheel area also I heard is good. Target around 80-120 feet of water. Go around slack tide -...

Saltwater WTF do I do now?

Haha. I face the same dilemma every year. I do go out for daytime squidding in Oct and Nov. But I've never done winter blackmouth or crabbing. Just too cold and wet! I grew up on the East Coast and really like the much longer seasons there. But on the flip side, they don't have the crazy...

    Saltwater MA 10 - What a season!!

Went out for the last time today. Got a 4 pounder, a lot of shakers, and a couple of decent sized blackmouth. What a year though. Last week was a spectacular bonus. Weekend - not so much.

    Saltwater A10 Kings, damnit

What a difference a day makes. This whole week was fantastic. Yesterday the fish were practically jumping in the boat. Creel reports averaged 2 fish per boat. If you didn’t limit yesterday, fish checker was asking what went wrong. Given the gorgeous day today, I expected more of the same...

Late start today. Meeting at my kids school. Then stopped in at Starbucks. But the weather wasn’t too bad so decided to go out. Line in water at 1030. 5 min later huge hit and landed a 30 inch, near 12 pounder. 70 min later another big hit and landed a 10 pounder. Back in the marina by noon.

I went out to the marina this morning and the wind was blowing like crazy. Decided to cancel and since the rain is moving in for the week, I'm guessing that the season is over. But what a season!! Starting in late July, I was seeing the crazy chinook catching in Area 9. But never ventured up...

Saltwater A10 Coho Unicorn with Parents

Like many of you, my passion for fishing came from my dad. I grew up in Eastern North Carolina and spent many a days with my father on the ponds catching bream, blue gill, and catfish - usually doing more fishing than catching! Since we were pretty poor, we didn't have access to a boat, so our...

    Solo netting tips and tricks?

First of all thanks for all the tips. Netting was surprisingly pretty easy. I loosened the drag a lot so took a lot of time to bring to the boat. He was pretty tired and barely struggled with only one short run once at the boat. Most importantly being in neutral. Of course that means being...

  51. KaiChung

    Solo netting tips and tricks?

So I tend to go solo a lot and when there's a big fish on, it's usually a cluster with the net. My go-to plan so far is to have everything set up including a net with the downrigger clip holding the net in so it doesn't flow into the fish as the boat is trolling. I spend a lot of time playing...

Hard to describe. On my fish finder, they look like the same size as salmon - but just tons of them all squeezed together, and all up and down the water column. I heard on other fish finders they resemble herring. In any case, if you see a big bunch of "something" in 50-100 ft of water from...

Yeah. You have about 3 hours around high tide (or low tide). Basically, slowly troll around until you find a big school. Mark it on your finder. Then just drop your rig. And try to stay with the school. You can pick up a lot of squid in a hurry. I'm usually around Alki but I think...

    Saltwater 9/19 area 10 report

At West Point everywhere between the yellow and green cans and about 500 yards north and south. Also saw a few baitballs. But the only thing I caught were about ten shakers, mostly small coho. I still don't know how to read my fishfinder well though - so don't know the size of the fish that I...

Went out today. Good news - lots of fish still on the fishfinder, the weather was fantastic, and there were no other boats around. Bad news - couldn't get a single hit. I think that's it for me for the year. Overall, it kind of sucked compared to the last two years. But still we're pretty...

    Saltwater 9/19 area 10 report

Saltwater Area 9 Yesterday (near Appletree Cove and PNP)

I was using a green hoochie squid on that one, but the 4 inch green colored spoon also does well. Fish were deep. Mostly marking the big ones at 200 feet. I was fishing with about 200+ out on the downriggers (probably 140' down). Couldn't imagine doing that with manual downriggers...

Saltwater Area 9 Yesterday (near Appletree Cove and PNP)

Beautiful day yesterday with the family. Lots of boats out there everywhere. We trolled between 11 and 12:30 (kids get bored easily). Caught one nice one around 25" but couldn't keep the shakers off. (Actually most of them were so small, they didn't even shake, resulting in trolling 12...

    Saltwater Area 9 yesterday

Thanks everyone for the help on identification. Definitely don't want to make an expensive mistake. I understand hatchery chinook can be kept but only over 22".

    Saltwater Area 9 yesterday

BTW, I'm still pretty new to this. And admit that I'm having trouble telling a chinook from a coho. I looked at the WDFW site and the salmon all look the same to me. I mean, how "black" is the mouth supposed to be for a king. Is the fish above a coho or a king?

    Saltwater Any Dungeness?

Seem to be only getting red rock crabs (a lot of them). But Dungeness are nowhere to be found. Very different from last year where dropping a pot for 2 hours usually yielded at least a couple. Anyone having any luck with Dungeness. Not sure if it's my location or if this is an issue...

    Saltwater Area 9 yesterday

Went out about 11am and fished for about 2 hours. The bite from 11 to noon was pretty insane. I only had one downrigger working but had a fish on pretty much 5 minutes or less from when I put the lure down. Most were smaller but my son caught a nice one... Fishing near Possession with...

    Saltwater Cabezon!

Bluish meat that turns white after cooking. Strange consistency like lobster...doesn't flake. The world record is 23lbs on rod & reel. I didn't have a scale onboard. It felt like it was over 20... Wondered if we ate a world record...

    Saltwater Cabezon!

A friend of mine hooked into this one while we were lingcod fishing off Possession. Didn't think there was anything uglier than a ling out there...

Saltwater Lets hear those Shrimpin reports....

Area 10 near Elliott Bay - 170 in 4 hours with two pots. Seemed to be best around 225 feet.

    Saltwater MA 11 Daylight Squidding

That's awesome. Were you just randomly driving around in 120-150' of water until you saw something on the fishfinder?

Saltwater Anything in Puget Sound in the fall?

Two pots, two hours. Not a bad haul... And the sand dabs are still out there :-)...

Saltwater Puget Sound Winter Grand Slam?

Saltwater Anything in Puget Sound in the fall?

Thanks Salmon King! I'll do that. Right now, not much on setting up the boat. I bought the boat from a friend who put on a nice depth and fish finder. But I haven't really used it since I didn't fish for salmon this year. I'm hearing a lot of interesting squidding options, so I'm trying to...

Saltwater Anything in Puget Sound in the fall?

Thank you Admin Leave. Great pointers. I haven't gone that far south yet, but would do that if the weather is good. I'm not looking for salmon info since I don't really target that in the sound given my kids patience level (although I'll do it next year with the pinks). Here's some pics of...

Saltwater Anything in Puget Sound in the fall?

Thanks. I know it's lame. Had kids. Didn't do much fishing since that time. And forgot this forum existed! But I just bought a boat so I'm hoping to contribute in the near future. I've got a lot of expertise on sand dabs in the sound :-)...

Saltwater Anything in Puget Sound in the fall?

My kids really enjoyed fishing in the sound during the summer for sand dabs, dogfish, and whatever random critters would bite. However, things seem to be a lot slower in the fall. Is there anything around that would keep kids interested? Flounders, sand dabs, anything? Thanks, Kai
