It was a great day, turned bad

$14k to can tuna? Sounds like we’d have been better off steaking and vacuum sealing them, then getting those fresh steaks to the food bank ASAP. Spending $14k to donate fish seems like a poor use of funds. My assumption, from sitting at the tournament, was Merinos was donating it all...

I wonder what the normal wait time is between caught to canned for most albacore. If Merinos’ product is usually 5-6 months but the boys at the Ilwaco Tuna Club are weeks, I know where I’ll be sending folks for canned tuna. I remember the applause Merinos got when they stood on stage and...

Electric reel or not can really depend on the depth one is in. Under 300’ is not that bad by hand. Even with multiple bait checks. However, the 700-800’ many fish in, with 4# of lead, sucks by hand. The fish fighting part isn’t terrible, if you kill your first. But if you have a few drifts...

Under the 1/2 tote and kill bag on the bow scenario: 3/4 fill the tote. 1/4 fill the kill bag. When you get out there, add 2-3 gallons of salt to the tote and a maybe 1 qt to the kill bag. When you get onto fish, Add about 15 gallons or so water to the tote. Pour it all around and torpedo...

Yup, your fish aren’t 65°. 90°+. Stick them with a thermometer and you’ll be quite surprised. When I started on my buddy’s 22’, we could get 13-15 decently iced. No commercial buyers will buy your fish at those temps. But, if you’re happy with the texture and taste, then good for you...

    Live bait

The way they scoop bait in SoCal is far different from up here. I’d much rather get our 10# in 5 scoops instead of 1, so they are not crushing one another, but that will never happen. Also, we only have 1 guy at the bait dock. SoCal folks have multiple boats getting bait at once.

Ha. Physics are physics. 4-6’ at 6 seconds and converging directions makes us all about the same. Other than us not pounding as much as you. It’s those random steep 5-6ers with no back side that suck for all of us. The rest of the time, I was around the 28 mph range, comfortably. No need...
  185. W

    Ice failure

About 10% salt to ice I believe, to get it to the lowest temp. Plus some water. It’s the combo of all 3. The liquid aspect eliminates all air around the fish, so you get maximum heat being pulled from the fish. This is what folks who open the belly and remove guts get such cold fish, sooner...
  186. W

    Selling Tuna

He’s saying that it’s doubtful that you had 17 well iced fish in a 15’ boat. Our fish holds are 30° or less. Most guys fish come to the dock nearly frozen. 35° fish on the surface are certainly much warmer at their core, which is what matters.

Good luck. Don’t be too macho to slow down if warranted. I’d rather take 30 minutes longer to get out than get pounded. It’s better for your bait too. #metoo is real... Take pictures or roll a GoPro. You will be amazed what you see if you watch yourself and crew afterwards.

Just heard that they have kids signed up, but not enough boats signed up to take them. Come on folks. 7 Sept. It’s one Saturday. It is unbelievably easier than you’re imagining. Also, far more rewarding that you can imagine too. Launch 0600-0700 and be back on the trailer about 2pm...

Question about a simple Tuna troll spread.

If you run them all close, you may come back empty handed. If you run them all too far back, you may come back empty handed. I’ve had days where they needed to be near the boat and other days where they needed to be way back. Be flexible, adjust if you’re not getting bit. You’d be fooling to...

1100 gph is fine for a 40 gallon tank. My 282 had the tank in the seat on the port side. I can’t say I had your problem, and I had a standpipe too. My problem was that weak baits got sucked up against the overflow and water would pour out the lid. As asked above, how long to fill? Are...

New boat coming to Float 12 in Westport

It is capable of strong thrust. Definitely want to be cautious so as not to over do it. I think those duoprops also bite more than standard props. Pretty sure it’ll be mostly used right at the dock. Small movements. Then grab the throttles for the big differential steering moves.

Westport. Albacore might be in by the time you’re here. Bottom fishing would still be an option. Possible some salmon. Rates are pretty standard among the big boats as well as among the 6-packs. Bring fowl weather gear. Our offshore conditions tend to be colder and rougher than yours.

Why the extra slack in the safety chain? with the way your turnbuckle is set up, the boat can slide back if the winch strap breaks, enough to pop that little chain. So why have it? Better yet, why not have that tight or the turnbuckle mounted further so the boat can’t slide back?

It’s trolling, for food. Would be hard to beat 2-3 handlines (spares) with natural cedar plugs. 50-75’ each. Run 1-2 at a time, have the third for back up. They’ll take up next to no space. I suggest knotting the tuna cord every 6’ or so, so it’ll be easier to pull in.

    Spotter aircraft this season???

I’m not saying there was alcohol involved or not. Just a couple guys in the aviation industry who own planes and makes up reasons to fly. And they like to fish and eat tuna. Might happen, might not. There’s been more than one day when many of us came home skunked or in single digits. Of...

    Spotter aircraft this season???

So, I may have a couple pilots rather interested in swapping out some flying time for some fish, cash, and or a tuna trip this summer. Sitting around BSing last night (I’m at an airport conference) and we got to talking about tuna fishing and how we look for birds, jumpers, etc. They laughed...

Grady Marlin 30 versus World Cat 320EC?

Grew up down there, but haven’t fished it for a good 10 years. Biggest difference in water conditions I’ve seen is that you guys would prefer not to fish on our “good days”.
