When things have gotten slow in the past for me I drop a 20lb downrigger ball to 20' with a moonjelly UV flasher and coho killer, typically one of the rods will get hit

Saltwater All Quiet on the Albacore Front.......?

Update I did make it out 10/01 and 10/02 to try a few things. I found that if I shut down the ball valve on the inlet side of the pump much it was all bad and the pump would lose prim and stop working. I then crimped the 1 1/8" hose that runs from the pump outlet to the bait tank about in half...

Saltwater All Quiet on the Albacore Front.......?

I have a ball valve between the pick up and pump and had murphy in mind when locating the pump speed dial, located it next to the circuit breaker in the fuse panel. I still have not made it out with the weather so in a holding pattern on testing. I'm sure when under way I will have additional...

Saltwater All Quiet on the Albacore Front.......?

Awesome info, thanks all for the input. It is a 2500 GPH pump and at speed the intake foot will likely add to the flow rate. Will have better luck now with this info and adjust I'm sure. Cheers!

Saltwater All Quiet on the Albacore Front.......?

I ended up installing a Hooker Electric 2500 below the waterline on a dedicated through hull with a variable water volume control switch, fed into a 42 gal Defiance tank mounted on my swim step. I left Westport and my 2 scoops looked fine but 35 miles out they were toast. I ran the pump at full...

    Saltwater Westport Salmon

I got to town with zero salmon intel and shouted out on 68 for help, was led to 25 miles north of the casino in 320' of water with very good fishing and would motor that way in the morning if I were going. 7 silvers and 1 king in the box with many natives released today, was worth the run.

    yellow-legged frog

Thank you, a GED and the school of hard knocks is an unforgiving education. I don't feel old, I still bang a gal half my age once in a while without paying for it. I understand what you are saying but in my opinion the last 6 or 7 years have changed things so sharply in a different direction...

    yellow-legged frog

Yes this may not the appropriate place for the post but I have the utmost respect and can identify most of the salty dogs here that have the balls and the cash to go off shore, and their opinions. There is not much else going on this time of year and thought it would be good filler. My 15 year...

Not to kick a dead horse here but I thought it would be appropriate to add more to the story of the yellow leg frog. I enjoyed the very well written and justified response for the request to trespass on private property for frog research and did a mass emailing forward and read the letter many...

Saltwater EPIC TUNA Trip Oct 9

Nice report and pix... If you have room on the deck, you can get a 2x4 insulated tote, half the size of the ones that they sell ice out of in WP, then a few kill bags for extra storage. I had the same problem with getting on step this year, next year I am going to try a prop that will deal with...

Saltwater Tuna 10/10 with All Rivers Charters

Don't spend a mint on a pre fab bait tank, you can get everything you need at Lowe's for about 60 bucks, as long as you have a wash-down pump that is rated for continuous use. The high pressure pumps get really hot after a few hours of use and will fail and ruin your day.

    Albacore by fly?

A 12wt or larger rod with an anti-reverse real that has a quality drag would be best, tie on 10' of 30# directly to a floating line. A streamer worked on the surface would do fine if they are boiling around the boat, or a longer leader and a splitshot if they are not hitting the surface. Either...

Saltwater Great Tuna Action 9/19 Ilwaco

I understand your concern for wasting fish. You are right, properly iced fish is key, and also correct about the NR floor live well and lack of insulation. I used contact cement to install 1/4" Mylar faced bubble wrap on the interior and it now holds ice overnight in the marina. I am able to...

Saltwater Great Tuna Action 9/19 Ilwaco

I had a bit of a delay posting this, it was totally overwhelming after a weekend off fishing then playing catch up with canning, smoking, vacpacking, work etc. The 5 of of left the dock at 7 and made it 42 miles out before I spotted activity in 61.5 deg water, dropped the gear and trolled 10...

Saltwater Heard some of the charters had a tough time finding the long fins!

Was planning for tuna today but with the low volume reports went for salmon, 22 miles west and hooked about 40 fish, 4 limits and back home. 30% kings, big one 14 LB, 2 12 LB silvers. Probably not going to run for tuna.

Saltwater No fish and Down 2 riggers.

Palomor works well and easy to tie, I use the Albright bc it has never failed but tougher to tie, either one is sure fire for braid connection. I have lost a few balls with stoppers that have slid, mostly due to pulling weeds through the boom pulley causing the stoppers to slide, much worse...

Saltwater Westport tuna and salmon info?

Scrapped the tuna with no bait tank and decided to run out deep for salmon, Casino was a bit slow prior and water was nice so decided on a tip at the dock to run 22 miles SW and had my best volume day of kings in WA. Not really sure how many came to the boat, estimating around 80. Strong silver...

Saltwater No fish and Down 2 riggers.

IMO 15lb balls and 250lb power pro works best, PP has small diameter and will reduce blow back. Larger rope with other brands will compounded over 70+ ft of depth, it's all about loosing resistance with everything from the ball to the surface. Look at the diameter of what you spool with and...

Saltwater Westport tuna and salmon info?

Ended up where you suggested but fished up in 70 ft of water bc of bait ping with limited king luck. Not sure what a fish flash is? I have limited diver exp, I typically drop the 15lb balls where they need to go, is there an upside to divers, or just less gear to pack around?

Saltwater Westport tuna and salmon info?

This is my first time fishing salmon at WP, any advice on kings? Spent time chasing crashing birds and working rip lines, Puget Sound king routine is not as effective here. The 2 we landed yesterday and today were mooching just off the bottom. Great fishery here, looking forward to learning more.

Saltwater Westport tuna and salmon info?

Did a last minute change on the live well pump without checking function and it does not work so it is a salmon game for this trip. Limited our 2 boats at the casino with 14 fish, only 1 king at 25lb. A boat pulled in the dock with 27 tuna 56 miles out, said they were crashing all over. It's a...
