The assist hook was hooked to figure 8 ring
The jigs are damaged from bft clamping down.
Wasn't complaining...trade $25 jig for triple digit tuna anytime.
That would be like complaining about losing a $3 weight on a sinker rig tuna. Lol
Mike, Cam, and the whole crew has the bft gift.
My freezer has been packed every year for about 4 years. JUST LISTEN TO WHAT THEY TELL YOU. Last 3day...Phenix Rods...Seth kept yelling pressure...look at picture...no pressure ...no fish
I have a fewish...lol
A pair of Talica 10ii on a pair of the H 25-60 for 30 or 40 lb bait ....lots of fun
On the XH I use Talica 12ii's for 50 and 60 lb bait, sinker,, and yoyo
For throwing I use 9ft Black Diamonds with Trinidad A's
Keep the rod loaded is all I heard fighting this kite fish Tues afternoon. Good thing I did...look at stinger line tangled in the treble hook.
My friend said "the blind squirrel got the nut"
Vagabond crew saves the day
A few years ago the marketing team would have called them EXTREME pliers...now they're GAME CHANGERS
So ...right around the same price as the game changing 2 spd reels we're using to catch these game changing bluefin?
Is Danco donating $649 of the $699 to a game changing charity?
I'm one of those people
Brought 30 pre-made leaders on 3day Sunday....200 to 300lb Yozuri pink with figure 8 and heavy swivel on the ends....don't forget line saver and a good crimp.
Gave them out to anyone who needed them.
Lent out Pitbull SR Pliers
Don't have a problem buying jigs....nice if they last more than one fish.
We had a few plus not survive the BFT on our Phenix/Vagabond trip this week.
Pictured...Rick's 200+ lb BFT ate and broke Katy Perry...🤣🤣🤣🤣
A 110 lb bft made my jig swim in circles...lol
Who knows? Next week's hot jig...
First I must THANK Cameron and the crew of the Vagabond...a well oiled kite flying gourmet food friggin machine....
55 miles for bft
65 miles south for yt
98 north for bft
Then the ride home

Your report has me even more excited for this weekend.
Taking my brother on his first 3 day ...leaving Sunday
Hoping for same success... a group of us are bringing friends/family that have never caught a fish over 100lbs.
This company is a piece of crap
Ordered spring scale 6/12
Created shipping label 6/24
Took payment 6/25
Their tracking said delivery 6/30-7/9
Delivery by 8pm 7/9...B.S.

If anyone wants to test any fishing tackle..line ..etc
You want to talk to Matt Forbes at Thirty Fathoms (on BD too)

Launch ramps at Lake Havasu and Parker Strip have to be a contender for top billing. I've seen vehicles in the water, boats run up over the trailer into tow vehicle and don't forget the alchohol paddy wagon at the ramp.....

To all you trolls that rag on me for complaining about customer service regarding 3 lures...
So you guys have never returned anything to a store?...a car or boat battery?... you have never complained at a restaurant, airport, dmv, etc.?
That is all customer service...
You crack me up
Warranty figured into cost..
I invented a marine product
Landed cost $3.78
Profit for me
Profit for retailer

How many does Shimano make‽
You have no clue
Customer Service is their fuckin job
While 3 lures at $20 each may be no big deal to you...it's a big deal to a lot of people..
I'm glad $60 doesn't require a second thought for you.... I'd rather give an extra $60 to Billy and the Red Shirts at the dock..they deserve a...
Some of you guys are missing the point...
The thread is about Customer Service not lures.
I have heard tackle managers and other fishermen complain about the quality of Shimano PHONE C.S. versus showing up in Irvine.
The super bright jigs are Pitbull Tackle
Full disclosure...they sponsor our long range trips
I love their products.
I've caught bft on all three brands in pictures..
and Diawa too
Just bought a bunch of Williamson from Melton...I'll try those next trip
The 2nd email showed a date coded 2/25/21 & location coded.. Turner's parking lot when I purchased jigs....
I sarcastically offered this picture as proof of purchase.... lol
IN RESPONSE TO ALL THIS I GOT A COMPUTER GENERATED SHIPPING INVOICE AT 5 AM THIS MORNING FROM IRVINE ...THE EAST COAST...
This is not about reel service...they have been great. This is about the Fishing General CS
This whole mess was over a complaint regarding 3 large flatfalls that didn't glow.
This is a copy of the email I sent to the CS Mgr yesterday. 1 of 2...will post 2nd next.
Shimano has lost a loyal customer!!!
Soda Pop should write a book about his long range travels....some of you vets could write the history of SD long range.
I had never heard of Clipperton til you guys all chimed in on the Furthest Traveled thread.
Whatever way you use a spring scale...use common sense on the boat
Have seen connections fail, high stick rod explosions, and spring scales come apart.
Be aware of your surroundings before you impale someone or hurt yourself.
Double check equipment
I started at the fire hydrant in front of my house.... grabbed the kids chalk and marked the street every 50ft to 400 ft. Red sharper for 50,150, etc..black sharper for 100, 200 etc.

Fantastic crew and passengers are always a plus fishing with Mike Lackey
It's all a gamble
Last trip my buddy was fighting a 200+ bft kite fish....on the 2nd run the fight completely changed. When he finally got the fish to gaff we were amazed. Main hook from flyer had come out...he landed the fish with the large treble stinger embedded in the fishes face below the...
Would you guys still bring them on a long trip?
Maybe I'm wrong but haven't those heavy lead lures and Nomads kind of taken over as trolling lure of choice?
I remember the "Tony the Tiger " & purple /black marauders getting a lot of wahoo
We bought 2 boxes of Gamakatsu HD 10/0 & 11/0.. 20 hooks Read a lot of good articles about them....each hook has 4) 220# cords, hook strength and size etc
At retail of about $10 each they better work..
I have a trip leaving in a week...
Will definitely let you know
Final comment on this thread..
I have ROUGHLY:
Dont know on thumbs down...
This data only proves my point...it shows nothing
BD has essentially CREATED A POPULARITY CONTEST WITH THE ACCURACY OF POLITICAL POLLING! Am I winning? WHO FUCKING CARES...
If you look at 1st post ....I started to show what bullshit the whole vote system is when someone downvoted Soda Pop for adding another trip to his calendar. I did it in support of a Long Range icon!
Downvote this...don't give a shit
After someone downvoted Soda Pop because he added another trip....i decided to tell how to read votes.

2) a pop up box will appear under your thumb
3) release your thumb pressure

All of those are 1/0 & 2/0...on a few of my 120gram snipers (and similar jigs) I have 3/0
Last year we landed bft up to about 65/70lbs on the 2/0 (and yellowtail)
Some guys worry about the "swim" of the jig with the bigger hooks...my answer.. I'm not that good of a jig fisherman to chime in on that
I usually have enough Owner 4X treble hooks and 200 or 250# Pitbull split rings with me to help a fellow fisherman not lose his catch.
I find when I can help someone out...it makes everyone's trip better
Gamakatsu HD They are 10/0 & 11/0 with four 220# cords...bulletproof
Owner on trailing end
Pitbull 250# split ring...priced right...to a Pitbull figure 8 400# ring..1/2 the price of others
Then Jinkai crimps on Yo-Zuri pink flouro
ALSO... JOHNNY GILBERT TELL OUR FISHERMEN MORE...LOL
Not only Is Phenix Rods providing giveaways & raffles...
Domnic (chartermaster) and i have arranged other sponsors....giveaways & raffles from:

I have nothing but good things to say about Fishermen's Processing...
From filets, collars, smoked & jerky...it's all been great. Melanie has even shipped a 25lb box of bft to a sponsor and they were elated.
Flash freezing is the #1 reason I process my fish. My last trip ...just the bft filets were over 125lbs...+ yt & yft. It would take over a week for your home freezer to freeze 200lbs of fish. Flash freezing keeps the fish FRESH.
Read threads on freezers too...auto defrost (bad)...upright vs...

Jeff from OCT told me to check out Ammo Bros....so I looked up website.

When I was in the automotive industry for 25 years.....I was called a tool whore. I made money having correct tool for the job. I apply the same thought with fishing tools. Knipex is the gold standard. Pitbull braid cutters and split ring pliers...awsome.

When we grew up in north OC we lived along Los Coyotes Golf course
We played around the Super Fund McCall Dumpsite military waste pits. During the winter we floated down the golf course on rafts. The water ran down from the dumpsite...
All my Axis rods are 8'2" ...I use them for bait sticks...softer tip..I fish them on low end of rating..e.g. 30-80lb is my 50, 40-100lb is my 60
My Black Diamonds are all 9' jig sticks again fished on lower ends of rating even more so... e.g. 30-80lb is my 40lb surface iron stick
All of these...
I have the whole series of Axis rods (including an 8' 60-130lb rail rod)
I sold the series in 7'2" and went up to 8'2" for primarily bait sticks
All of them are paired with Talica 2 spds from an 8 to 25.
That 30-80lb rod I pair with a 10ii for 40lb and a 12ii for 50lb
I use my 16ii for 60lb on...
PP hollow core ace
Out of 15 rods I brought on the trip only the Talica 16 rotted
7 Talicas had hollow core
My Talica 12 & 16 had 65# base w/ 50 & 60 flouro respective
Reels sat during off season
Then noticed "pasty" line
After Matt reminded me about mercury levels in fish...I looked up some articles on it.
In college 40 yrs ago I cooked in a high end restaurant....we served tons of swordfish, tuna, thresher and trendy orange roughy...all the worst on current lists
I agree...get a feel for long range trips using the boats equipment...the LR boat I fish has all those Penns available...
Make sure you like long range trips....
Check out other equipment people are fishing
See what you're comfortable with...
Then you can go out and spend a fortune like I did
When we were hooking the 40-80# bft on snipers last year; we grabbed our trusty Pitbull Tackle split ring pliers and bought 6 packs of 3X Owners and changed out everyone's hooks on the boat. Several dead bft... lol
I know you guys are bagging on Flatfalls but I have had success on big bft.
Hooked 3 on 250-320 gram Shimano & Nomads
Snapped an 80# knot, broke 100# mono and landed this one on 130#. This picture is from the Phenix/ Vagabond 6 day last year.....we landed several on Flatfalls
I thought there would be some 2500 yard spools of line that cooked in your garage before it got used.... lol
Here's another 2...bought a pair if trolling rods & reels for friend's boat...
He sold boat next season
I'll go first...
Bought 3 sabiki rods & reels for friends sportfisher...used them once.
Just took up rod spots...
Gave them to a LR boat
Probably through them overboard when the hooks stuck in the tube.
Also a bitch to thread line through them.
About $500 well spent... lol
Here's the setup I've had success with
Leader: Pitbull 235# swivel
200-300# flouro 3' long + line savers
Pitbull figure 8 ring
Nomad & Shimano Flatfalls:
Pitbull 200-300# split ring to "eye" end of lure
Gamakatsu 10/0 or 11/0 Heavy assist hook (comes w/ 4 strands of 200# cord) attached to sr...
I had several custom ones made for trolling rods and drag scales
10 in blue and yellow to match Vagabond
4 in red for friend's sportfisher
4 that match my trolling rods
Misc. Others for friends

Then real OCD kicks in...the tubs are labeled with a...
I took 10 of my Shimano reels to Irvine headquarters. My bill came to $290 for labor...No charge for bearings, shafts etc. (37 parts listed)
I'll drop off 10 more this year ...how can you go wrong?
Most of the top reel manufacturers offer this service...$25-$30 per reel for labor...n/c parts.
I have bought everything from Mustad fingernail clippers to $60 hair shears. Here is what is hanging off my long range box...These snips work great to clip a mono or flouro tag. Safer than scissors on a moving boat.
For all braid connections I use the Pitbull Braid Cutters....they are the best...
Rich lists the screws also because 2 screws on the 50 handle are different. The Tac 50 uses 3mm screws...tac 8- tac 25 uses 2.5 cm screws. Rich...you want more power? I live 12 miles from Cal Sheets...had him trick out 1 of my Tac 25's with low 1st gear
This bft was turned around and wrenched in
I tried with success the various Pitbull jigs locally and on a 6 day to Mexico
Even caught yt on the Dead Eye...other species on Dead Fall..
The oddest hook up was a Dorado on a Bora jig..
The Bora also got Lings etc.
Company is from Northern California...I bought on their website.
$13-16 Red(Amazon or Home Depot)
Pitbull braid cutters &split ring pliers $12.99 each at pitbulltackle.com
Sheaths Amazon $22
Thirty Fathoms knott pullers $29 on Ebay
Hats from your favorite vendors
Man cave wall art
Post more items...I'm always looking...
Needless to say...I can sleep anywhere
I found when the boat has the rocking going on the galley level rooms are interesting.
My favorite is behind the bait tank in a comfortable chair
On the Phenix trips Dom thinks it's funny taking pictures of me sleeping after a travel cocktail.
My friends and I will be on The SD Nov 22nd fishing the Coronado Islands. I will have jigs for everyone on the boat from Pitbull Tackle. I will also have some Pitbull braid cutters and Thirty Fathoms Knott Pullers to give away to some of you catching fish on the jigs.
On vintage car restorations where the suspension has black oxide plating...WD40 is the worst. People would spray it on like Armor All at shows and wonder why the suspension would rust....it breaks down oils
Never expected this response...
We've done day charters for the cigar smokers...
I can only imagine a long range trip with a cigar & alchohol tasting....
Instead of bringing a dozen rods....I'd bring 2
I would bring 60 or 70 cigars + proper after dinner drinks...How relaxing is that?
Just got back from a 6day on Vagabond
Lost a Nomad Buffalo 320 gram crimson when 100# line snapped between 200# leader and 130# braid.
Landed a 135# on a 250 gram Shimano FF..
Both fish bit on fast retrieval...starting at 350'
Domnic & I are lining up many sponsors for next year Phenix Vagabond 3 & 6 day trips in 2021.
Everyone loved tools and terminal tackle from Pitbull, knot pullers from Thirty Fathoms, sunglass gel from Vantifog, lures from One Cool Tuna, Yeti cups and shirts from Turner's, gift certs from...
I don't know of a single boat that will kick you off for smoking cigars, cigarettes, or vaping.
This thread is about smoking high end cigars.
Have smoked them with passengers, captains, and deck hands....
I actually quit smoking cigarettes
Haven't smoked in a year
Never really drank
Leaving tomorrow on a 6 day
Plan on drinking and smoking cigars
Maybe Long Range fishing is a bad influence..
If you do need to quit smoking cigarettes...
Read Qyit Smoking the easy way by Alan Karr (?)...
My brother and his wife also own Cheap Bastard & Golf Bastard Cigars. Great entry level cigars at a reasonable price. I used to bring boxes to hand out but newbies tended to thrash Mike's boat.
Now my brothers sends about 40 fan favorites... fans being friends/ deckhands that rig my setups...
Domnic and I used NO hardware to rust
Look at my old thread 1 or 2 months ago
Drilled holes in inner wall
Bought 7' of cord
Cut cord in half
Looped it through space between outer and inner wall
Used grommetswhere cord goes through inner wall
My old thread has pictures ....step by step
You would fit right in on one of our trips...
Nothing is off limits...
You could laugh when I bring up an empty bait hook...trying to feel it in the air..
I look like I'm trying to catch imaginary butterflies on acid...
My fishing buddies, Vagabond crew, The SD crew, and New Seaforth crew are...
15.00 at Walmart too...just looked it up
The funniest thing is.... those of you that fish with me know I can't see well enough to use any of this stuff on the boat...only with magnifying light at my desk..
I own most of the Pitbull tools...started a thread on both sizes of split ring pliers by Pitbull. Have given sr pliers & braid cutters to deckhands & captains on the Vagabond, The SD, & New Seaforth (and fellow fishermen) ...but I too own the Wiss shears.
By the way the Wiss shears are on sale...
Come on the Phenix Vagabond 6 day leaving this Sunday....Pitbull is also a sponsor. Pictured is just part of the swag Dom (Phenix prostaff/charter master) and I are giving to all passengers. I have also given away probably 10 pair of braid cutters to deckhands and friends.
They are awsome
I have some with bridle/Hawaiian sling
The ff's I set up with a swivel used a 3' 150# crimped leader..the figure 8 at the lure and swivel at end of leader....Are you guys saying swivel at lure and solid ring at end of leader?
I posted this on "jigs/poppers" forum....no comments.
So how are you rigging figure 8 rings to split rings, assist hooks, large ff's and line?
Using crimped flouro with line saver?
Pictured is one diagram I found
One of BD patrons asked me where I got everything including the box itself.
READERS DIGEST VERSION
Both boxes came from Turner's in Temecula

Pitbull is going to expand their dealer network in Southern California...until then check out pitbull.com. They have great terminal tackle , lures, etc online. I will be fishing with their Bora lures this trip. Domnic and I are going to try them on YT and HOO if we go to the ridge. Definitely...

If you get sea sick and Dramamine works for you...you need to buy Meclizine. This bottle of 100 is $4.19 at Costco...few bucks more at local pharmacy. These are the same dosage in low dose Dramamine. I take one every 12 hrs on a long range trip. Spend the money you save on more tackle.
One of our group passed away a couple years ago....another tackle whore...(me too)
We set up all his grandkids with complete fresh and saltwater gear...all top notch stuff.
We still had tons of stuff...too much to try and sell piece by piece...
I called John at San Diego Tackle Traders.
Shimano TLD 30 2 SPD & California 5 1/2 ft 40-100lb roller rod
I had a pair of these for 80lb inshore strollers
Sold 1 rod & reel for $200...now this one is for sale for $200
Almost cut them down for kite rods
Actually the rocket launchers do support the box AND all the crap inside
You were worried about boat rocking...I am concerned about breaking the launchers before that...strapping box to tackle rack
I'm looking to fill that void under the box
Let me try to help
Based on 3/16 or 1/4 bungie cord
I'd of grommet = od of bungie cord
Width of groove 1/8"= wall thickness of lid inner wall
od of GROOVE = final drill /hole size
Made a jig/template so all holes are mirrored
When you pull cord tight and crimp or tie connection...make sure...
I bought 3/16 chord...1/4 would work fine.
Key is the groove on the grommets I used is 1/8" ...which is close to the inner wall thickness of the lid. Fed chord through with piece of wire.
The chord and grommets came to a whopping $5...add my $3 licensing fee...you're only out $8
I did the plexiglass door removal and bungie chord retainer modification on my 7100 box.
I didn't want to use any "rustable" hardware. Looped chord through double wall construction of lid. Fastened section of chord hidden.
I'm not getting rich.... I spent $400 on masks that I gave away. It also helped CalTs a small business near my house. The SD masks were given to friends of mine..fishermen and crew. Ryan got the rest for his regulars. The Vagabond/ Phenix were done for 3 day sponsor trip. My response: If it...
I posted all about Pitbull split ring pliers on saltwater threads. For you freshwater water guys...here is a picture of Anthony from Last Chance Tackle in Hemet using the regular pair of split ring pliers on a tiny #2 split ring. He and his coworker are avid freshwater fishermen and experts on...
Looking forward to fishing with everyone.
A bonus from our three day Phenix July trip came out of a post on BD. I posted that the Pitbull split ring pliers were awsome for hooks on snipers. Pitbull liked post enough to send a great package for everyone on upcoming 6 day.
Viewdoo also like...
I still think the Pitbull split ring pliers (both sizes) are the easiest and most versatile to use. The friends and deckhands I've given the pliers to really like them. I've only been able to use them on a work bench with a magnifying glass/light.
(No blood blisters ..lol)
They worked well...
Even the fans of HPA sr pliers for the heavier rings say they have 2 or 3 different pair for lighter rings. ( check out old BD posts for lighter ring pliers ..July 2019) At about $13 each for Pitbulls, I covered all my needs for $30 including tax. The regular pair works for freshwater and...
Was PM's where to buy them...
I bought them on pitbull.com where the free shipping kicked in after ordering other items.
Their website lists dealers in San Diego area including Ken's, other tackle shops & landings.
There's quite a few tackle shop from L.A. to SD that carry them....just not Temecula

They sell 2 sizes...both are $12.99
The "Heavy Duty" are designed for the 200-400# split rings on my trolling stuff
I have both pair and the braid cutters.
I have given the 3 pack to fishing buddies and deck hands
I have always fished the same LR boat....
I tip $80-$100 for all my long range trips.
OH...THAT'S 80 TO 100 PER DAY
Just got in on a 3 day yesterday...we killed em
Gave the guys $300 and I had giveaways for everyone on the boat (Gators & Viewdoo sunglass gels)
I like everyone to have fun
I'm taking a different approach....
Don't go on any of the LR boats.
When I was younger...Quit drugs cold turkey
Later I quit smoking by reading a book on how to quit.
Drinking never really a vice
Now we get to LR
The overnights and 1 1/2 day trips are the "gateway"
Then you try a 3 day...it's...
Are all you guys going to bring your arguments on 8, 10, and 16 day trips?
I can't wait to enjoy a nice relaxing fishing trip with a verbalized version of these discussions.
Now that would be a waste of a $5k vacation...

I tried to buy $1,000.00 worth of future passes on the San Diego through Seaforth about 2 weeks ago. My theory was if I bought the tickets, I could force my brother to fish with me later.
Seaforth told me I couldn't buy a credit on my account. Ryan, Matt and crew go out of their way to make sure...

Eddie sent me a teaser picture of 909XHJ progress.
2nd of 5 blanks I gave him. Only input I had was reel seat & soft grip material. Just like last rod he wrapped color scheme and hardware his choice.
Fished the first rod, Phenix Titan, and got many compliments.
Gave Eddie at Blacksmith Custom Rods my lighter Titan blank...told him to do whatever he wanted. When I pulled the rod out of the cover I was shocked. So shocked... I gave him a heavier Titan blank, two 9' Black Diamond blanks, and a 7' 80-200 Hybrid rail rod blank...
Can't wait to see them...
