    Cow Reels

IMO there is no need for a 50 sized reel for most applications IMO too big and heavy to lug around at the rail all day.....I prefer Penn VISX 20 Okuma Makaria Sea 20 or Accurate ATD 30 I have all three and they are superb.... don't like Avets....JMO

it's getting close now. Intrepid Nov 30 - Dec 10

Advice on fishing small circle hooks

not a fan of offset hooks they can hang up in places other than the corner of the mouth....
  137. Fishybuzz

    Surface and Yo-yo’s

I agree they (Tady's and Salas ) are classics however IMO lots of them don't swim...... since this individual is new to the art of iron fishing he will be challenged to pick out ones that swim...... that's why I suggested JRI's.
  138. Fishybuzz

Is the tranx worth the extra money

IMO if $$ is not a issue get the Tranx 500, i have been using them for over 6 years with zero problems.... WSB to 60#....wahoo to 45#.....yellowtail to 42#.....YFT to 50# no issues plenty of drag and great casting.....I like the PG not the HG.........second choice would be Komoto 463......soild...

    pet peeve: stickers on jigs

one word "solvent".....that is why it takes the sticky stuff off...I never use it as a lube but it does work well to displace water in a flooded engine electrical system ....
  140. Fishybuzz

    Surface and Yo-yo’s

JRI 3, JRI 4, JRI DW1 for surface in teal, mint and Blue/white..... JRI 66 or 6 for yo yo...in scrambled egg and blue/white....IMO good starting point...the reason for JRI's is they almost all swim....very few non swimmers.
  141. Fishybuzz

    pet peeve: stickers on jigs

wd40....easy peaszy.....or just fish it with the sticker the fish don't care as long as it swims....

    Question on Wahoo Bomb colors

Yep that is the reason for the 6.5 oz bombs we have found that the faster sink rate and staying deep on the ultra fast retrieve especially on the slide results in more strikes......

If you picked one but reel what would it be

I have one, great reel imo for 100# have caught plenty of cows with 100#.....plenty of drag for 130# but capacity can be a issue using 130# IMO
  152. Fishybuzz

    Favorite setup for 30# bait?

I understand about 8 days in the RSW is the limit.....and it is very important to change out the water at least once....
  163. Fishybuzz

    Best 16 day charters?

Just my opinion but there is a difference between a YFT and a BFT cow....the majority of the BFT cows are caught on the kite ...and IMO pound for pound I think YFT fight much harder ...... just different.....

    best reel for a Reaper

The HG is a high speed reel the PG has a lower gear ratio and IMO better suited for the slow to moderate retrieve for surface iron and easier to get cranks on bigger fish because of the lower gear ratio.....I use a PG and really like it

    A few observations on wahoo...

what J hooks did you use??
  275. Fishybuzz

    Initial Long Range Setups

I really don't care much what the manufacturer rates their rods at ...IMO that is just a starting point IMO one needs to put a reel on the rod string it up and pull at various drag setting to really determine what that particular rod is suited for.....when a rod is rated at 30 to 80 that is just...
  276. Fishybuzz

    Initial Long Range Setups

The rod dictates the size of the topshot because if your rod bottoms out with 10# of drag you don't have lift to fish more than 30# test top shots... so to fish 50# your rod will need to still have lift with 15# of pressure....the reason I fish a topshot rated less than my braid is that most...
  277. Fishybuzz

    Initial Long Range Setups

    More than welcome.....good luck...
  278. Fishybuzz

    Initial Long Range Setups

You can fish anything from 30# to 50# topshot ...the real determining factor is your choice of rods.....the rod will really determine what your parameters are for the topshot.
  279. Fishybuzz

    Initial Long Range Setups

I would put something like 60#/65# solid braid with a short 4' or 5" topshot of mono or FC....

That can happen to any hook if the point sticks in bone, a hook will bend or break if the hook is in bone, that will not occur with a proper hookset .....the biggest thing for people to learn is to how to properly set a circle hook....most people think they doing it right but most people in fact...

    Trolling for Wahoo with Spectra

I just always err on the side of caution when fishing for cows.....I will change out my topshot that i used all day at the end of the day even if I didn't get bit.....I like starting out the day with a fresh topshot and fresh connections.....one never knows when the next bite is "the one"....LOL...
  288. Fishybuzz

    Trolling for Wahoo with Spectra

I like having mono in the water when trolling....so I usually have a 100' topshot of mono......I would never use a topshot that I used for trolling for fly lining baits for cow tuna.....don't want to take the chance of using line that is compromised in any way......JMO

Is a Calstar GF 700xh strong enough for cows?

Your 760H is a 80# stick, IMO adding length will not change the power ....my buddy hooked the biggest tuna I ever saw on a 760h...... Capt Osborn and I saw it and he estimated it at close to 400#.... a 320# was landed a hour before and this fish looked 1/3 larger, he fought it for over 3...

    Initial Long Range Setups

JMO but I think it should be one of your initial setups...why have three hammers and no screwdrivers...?LOL
  318. Fishybuzz

    Initial Long Range Setups

A really good reel for just about $200 is the Penn live Liner 6500 gets like 30# of drag...great for flying a live bait.....you could put it on a rod like a UC Tilefish a 8 footer for around $275 or a Phenix 809H Black diamond.....the Quantum Cabo 80 is also pretty good but no bait runner...
  319. Fishybuzz

    Initial Long Range Setups

You can get a quality spinning reel for around $200-$250..no need to get a Stella or Makaria or Daiwa Dogfight...and a rod for $150...very comparable to a conventional outfit....
  320. Fishybuzz

    Initial Long Range Setups

i highly suggest you get a QUALITY 40#/50 spinning outfit.....if you get the correct rod and reel you can use this for casting small baits that would be difficult with conventional outfits..last July on a 8 day if you had a spinner you were killing it the rest caught fish but not like the people...

  323. Fishybuzz

    Xtra Tuff vs Grunden boots

Flip flops or keen sandals no boots for me....and IMO the La Cross boots are more comfortable that either you mentioned if you have to wear boots....I only wear boots when the wahoo are around even then sometimes I only wear my close toed Keens....

    What scale for setting drags

Even digital scales need to be recalibrated sometimes..digital scales are sensitive to changes in temperature.....they can be checked for accuracy the same as spring scales by hanging a known weight from it....
  336. Fishybuzz

    What scale for setting drags

I have been using a Shimano 100# spring scale for over 15 years....works great and is accurate....to test accuracy I lift free weights with it from 5# to 40#.....it can be adjusted and calibrated.

    AA jackpot

Fishing the kite correctly is a learn skill just like every other fishing technique....some are better at it than others IMO it is not a passive activity..... when on the kite you must be sure if it is a double trouble or a large fin bait to keep it splashing on the surface if your baits die...

Intrepid December 10th, 10 day cancelled

I spool mine up with 100# solid then used a hollow line splice and topped it off with another 100 yards of 100# solid......after every trip I replace the top 100 yards......I like the way solid fishes live bait and the way the FG knot ties with solid.....JMO

  355. Fishybuzz

    100lb+ fish?

JMO but the odds of catching a 100# tuna locally are not as good as going on a 15 day to the lower banks....the local boats market the heck out of EVERY 100# plus BFT caught ..... where most of the time 100# fish are not mentioned if caught at HB or the buffer zone......

    Best On board fish handling??

on the Intrepid passengers are not allowed to mess with fish prep especially wahoo even the smaller grade tuna and yt are gilled and bled out........they do a great job of gilling gutting and spiking your fish...why would you want to do it?

Best Knot for Braid to Floro or Mono?

Here are two FG knots after catching cows and 1+ hour fights both in 100# spectra and 100# FC both are 16 total wraps I have found 16 total wraps holds/cinches down better than 20 or 24 in heavy line........
  398. Fishybuzz

    New To Crimping

This was my last cow at the bank....50#/60# line maybe not
  399. Fishybuzz

    New To Crimping

IMO a 4 turn uni is stealthier than any crimp.....and why in the world would ANY one fish 50# or 60# at the Bank.....I have fished 80# but I am not good enough or brave enough to fish 50/60#.

    A few observations on wahoo...

Jorge was Jorge....we are mere mortals....LOL
  401. Fishybuzz

    A few observations on wahoo...

I personally don't use one.... I use a Stella that gets only 53" a crank..... the Mak 30000 guys use them for bombs on the slide not for casting all day... a very specialized use...so you add the speed of the slide plus the 65"a crank and the bomb is now going maybe 14 MPH ...LOL they are very...
  402. Fishybuzz

    A few observations on wahoo...

Surface iron is a totally different type lure than a bomb or Raider type lure..... what what I suggest is next time you are out fish a raider, bomb or Catchy 33 like a surface iron and report back with your results...heck maybe you are on to something.....maybe we have got this all wrong and...
  403. Fishybuzz

    A few observations on wahoo...

I I disagree..... next trip slow retrieve a catchy 33 or raider or a bomb and see if you get bit..let us know how that works out....now a surface iron or popper will get bit on a slow retrieve ....JMO from years of fishing for these rascals.....the Mak 30000 get 64" a crank.....
  404. Fishybuzz

    A few observations on wahoo...

I sharpen EVERY hook I use for wahoo ..... I sharpen mine to a point....
  405. Fishybuzz

    A few observations on wahoo...

3 feet of 50#-60# FC for my jigs and 130# FC for bombs and the slide.......I like the short leader as there is minimal stretch with the short leader direct to the braid.....I need every advantage I can get hooking wahoo...I rarely fish bait for wahoo....
  406. Fishybuzz

    A few observations on wahoo...

I straight tie to a 3' FC leader to braid......no wire.
  407. Fishybuzz

    Short SOA report

I rather eat wahoo than tuna..... and I think they are at the ridge.....just something about hooking wahoo on the jig or bomb that I find additive.....

    Please dont touch my drag

  419. Fishybuzz

    Spinner set-up for 'lupe

JMO...but if I were you stick with a scale.....I know very few people who can accurately pull 25# of drag by hand...you may be a exception.....lower drag 6# to 12# no biggie above that I use a scale.....why guess when you can be accurate.

Connection recommendation Spectra/ Flouro knot or serv ?

Exactly like I tie the FG....excerpt I don't use the glue.......no need to mushroom the end..... But if you can tie a good Pena IMO it is a good knot too.
  440. Fishybuzz

Connection recommendation Spectra/ Flouro knot or serv ?

Correct that is exactly what I am referring to.....a slinky that is dragged through the water....
  441. Fishybuzz

If you are really concerned with that sardine dragging excess stuff around you should someday consider the FG knot a lot less for that bait to pull compared to the inserted connections JMO.....

    shears to cut braid?

Pit Bulls are $12.99 and IMO superior especially for close trims on knots....

    shears to cut braid?

  462. Fishybuzz

  463. Fishybuzz

    shears to cut braid?

    IMO no...
  553. Fishybuzz

    Line to leader system?

either......flouro stretches almost as much as mono.....lots of times I will fish mono instead because of conditions....I do not not tie a FC leader onto mono...either straight mono or straight Flouro....
  554. Fishybuzz

    Line to leader system?

I have never had a "lack of stretch" issue fishing short 15' top shots and a FG knot while fishing cow YFT..... the 7'6" rail rods I use have light tip section which provides good shock absorption to prevent pulled hooks and knot failures....
  555. Fishybuzz

    Line to leader system?

ALL my rigs from 30# to 130# are set up with the FG using both mono and FC leaders.... IMO there is no down side using the FG......if you want more stretch use a longer topshot.....why do you think you will have more stretch using a loop to loop?

The pangas fish the entire lee side of the island plus the high spots on the south end and weather permitting the windward side too....I guess what I am asking is what incentive is there for the locals to share the fishing grounds with the Long Range fleet?
  607. Fishybuzz

    possibility of coastal islands opening

No i disagree ..... the combination of both closures have improved the fishing how many thousands of YT were taken out annually by the LR fleet? 20000? 10000? more??? 631. Fishybuzz

What are some tips and tricks for catching yellowtail on the surface iron?

Great advice...... you will not become proficient unless you make a conscious effort to walk away from the bait tank and throw iron.....go to your local park and practice throwing into the wind with the wind...... practice for accuracy and distance two different skill sets IMO.

  637. Fishybuzz

    Best knot mono to fluorocarbon

To determine the true strength of a knot you first have to establish the true breaking strength of the lines....not the number stated on the spool then you tie your knot and pull to destruction with a digital scale...you may be surprised at the results.
