Five Star Fish Processing temporary closure

I wrote to them, just to check on the reason for closure, as I had recently received some of my fish, beautifully processed. There response: "Yes. You should be just fine. We are taking the recommended precautions as the numbers are so high in our area. Stay healthy!" I think my fish is...

Gotta report a guy - - it is way good

So nice to report something really positive. As most of you know, Mike Morris of BigFishTransport had a wonderfully successful double lung transplant at UCLA over a year ago. He is indulging his double passion of fishing and just being nice by returning to his work of simplifying trips for...

Exceptionally strongly felt best wishes for a Happy New Year.

To my Bloody Decks friends. Best wishes, and … I apologize for the evidence of melancholy in my last post. The last 4 ½ days of that 7 day trip were likely the best that could have been made of the circumstance and were thoroughly enjoyed by many on the boat. Roy and the crew were just plain...

RP 12-8 to 12-15 - a brief post with lessons learned.

Of course you are absolutely correct. Roy is Apex. The boat is fine if mature. ROY’s decision to go where we went was the best one, all things considered. I do enjoy time on the water (though would have preferred smoother water for the last five days. It was at that point that you couldn’t drift...

RP 12-8 to 12-15 - a brief post with lessons learned.

Just to mention: Gerard's fish was beatiful pictured above. About an hour after I finished my Kite rotation I was back fly lining and chatting when FOUR crew members, each with a gaff in his fish ceremoniously down the starboard side and hefted it in unison over the rail. Gerard's setup was a...

Sorry you feel so strongly about something that you resort to f-bomb and "hate" someone for it. You do not explain the why you feel so strongly about this kind of box and launchers. At least some on this trip appreciated the spots freed up on the RP aft rack by mine being used. A couple of...

RP 12-8 to 12-15 - a brief post with lessons learned.

So a few notes from my long planned-for 7 day. 1) Better anglers are successful, not lucky. Illustrations: When walking from the Vagabond Inn to Fishermans early the day of departure I was looking at the stacks of fish from another boat just offloading. Stack #24 was really an outlier...

Yet another wooden box, a bit smaller this time, with adjustable height, and one hand access.

After staring at the box in my room at the Vagabond the night before departure I came to my senses. I got Chris, the lead redshirt, to cut the legs in two. With the shortened stance and the duck feet and dimensions a bit deeper than an SKB, the box moved NOT AT ALL. Some of the time the sea...

Made these just now: So how many toes does a duck have, anyway. Had some .10 aluminum and some right sized 316L stainless washers and some 1" flat head 1/4-20 bolts. this will add good stability. Hope it doesn't slide. - gotta get some rubber bumpers for the bottom of the duck feet. It is...

That is why the tool and cup holders are removable. If I get a shelf spot, I won't put them on. On the stability: I worry about that. That is exactly why the legs are at the extreme corners of the box, on the ends of the rocket launchers bolted to stiles, that are routed to a contoured 2"...

I leave in three days for a 7 day on the RP, so I built another box. I wanted something smaller than the box that made an 18 day with me. Lessons learned - most importantly needed to be smaller, and, since it is the RP, no likely will not get a shelf spot, needs to have removable legs, so...

Hey Pete, It is now on the bench in the family "craft room." I doubt it will go on another trip. Just too big and heavy. I have one more box in me, I think. It will be: Much lighter weight. Smaller than an SKB, but will hold 3700 size box - probably only 2 Everything accessible with one...

You just appologized for a carefully worded helpful response. Leaving the silver at home, having made some hook choices, had been the plan until this thread. I am entering the “Don’t worry, be happy,” phase of prep. But, did just decide it will be fun to put together a little silver solder...

David, anything to this: I now have several big jigs that came without hooks. I also now have a large collection of hooks to be used on these, but I haven't put hooks on several of the jigs. When I talked to Jerry Brown (fellow Oregonian) about this, wanting to be sure I did not use an ink that might weaken anything, he encouraged Sharpie, and suggested drying it with a hair dryer (not a heat gun) for about 30 seconds, to be sure it was dry, before moving on. I am on the same trip, and am not in decent shape. Also, have a Masters in Kinesiology after my Bachelors in Physical Education, both before my MD. It is "will" and discipline. Probably the most important thing is find something you enjoy doing. Very few people stick to fitness programs they...

    Knot Numbers, disappointing

Thanks to all for what has been a wholly positive thread. Things that will be added to next trials - but not today: Better lubrication On 3-turn Uni, be sure the tag is parallel to the main, tighten a bit more before pulling down, On SDJam, keep the wraps nicely like a noose. Also tighten with...

    Knot Numbers, disappointing

Might be better to think of the Erwin as a locked Trilene. At least for me, who, obviously is no expert, but have spent some time on this, the knot is exactly like a Trilene, with the add that the tag is placed through the loop around the index finger.

    Knot Numbers, disappointing

Nope. I hoped and checked. Also pulled my machine scale against another drag scale, and also lifted two known weights. Scale is pretty close - probably darn near spot on, and set to pounds. Good thought though.

    Knot Numbers, disappointing

Clearly, I need to do something. I have some Seaguar Blue on it's way -- which I bought to replace the line I used in this testing -- which I thought while I was tying all the knots, was Blue, but was in fact Premier. I can reuse the rings and thimbles. I think the fluoro costs about a buck a...

    Knot Numbers, disappointing

I wish I had a way to test ABS. The fixtures needed to hold the line such that the ends are not the weak point are VERY expensive, and belong on testing machines like Instron and MTS. I need to keep in mind that i am just trying to make the best choice and technique for fishing.

    Knot Numbers, disappointing

Basil, As you know John Collins refers to the knot in that 2014 video as the Springer, but most agree he was not remembering the passenger's name correctly. The difference between what he is doing and what is in Jeff Burroughs illustration is that Jeff goes through the loop created by the...

    Knot Numbers, disappointing

I could not agree more. Gotta do some stewing on how to control more variables. Need better wetting before tightening, for sure. I was actually more troubled by the inconsistency (standard dev.)than the overall lowness. Also, as I mentioned, I was using Premier, which is thinner than the...

I have not. Yet another one to try. Looks like it would be pretty fat.? Looks like a San Diego Jam but with the wraps done after going through the eye and your finger twice. Starts like a Spangler, but with SDJ wraps in stead of the two through the loops passes. Is it hard to slide down...

    FO8 v. Ring

I cannot tell the difference, as I was pulling with one knot on one end and the challenger on the other. As I recall, while the Spangler lost every time to the SD Jam, the peak load at failure was good for all the knots. I will repeat when in the process of my tries with the 130 Seaguar...

  267. locvetter

Those huge poppers and stick baits made for GT

I agree. Some of them are really works of art. There had to have been a lot of learning to do the foils and abalone and scale patters and airbrushing - to say nothing of the trial and error swim patterns and balancing horizontal float. A pretty niche.

I got mine from e-bay. They came from Italy. I could not find a US vender for the ringed version. Trophy Tackle had the unringed version. I think Guy sells ones that he has ringed. The packages looked factory sealed when I received them. This was, I think, about a year ago.

And, if paired with a bit longer handle arm, I might be able to turn it under encountered loads. Is it just the nod to "sport" that prevents creation of not only much lower gearing, but a reversible ratchet that would allow more of the effort now placed pulling on the rod into retrieving line?

There was a discussion on BD about the ringed version of the VMC 7630, and caution was raised about the wire gauge size of the ring. Jim, Of interest: Now that I have played a bit with the reels, that arrived last week, I note a give/take on the non-click retrieve on these Maks. The free spool is not quite so free. As explained to me, the spring for the new antireverse must be stronger than the little pawl springs. Always...

FG reigns over loop to loop?

As I have tried to come up the learning curve on a dependable FG knot I have found that getting those first few wraps right tight to each other is still not wholly dependable. If one does not get those tight, the knot will slip off the end of the mono/fluoro. Since tying technique and detail...

Wooden Tackle Box Pictures and Builders

The sides are spalted maple -- that is wood that has a fungal infestation that creates the very dark grain lines. In this book matched set I thought it looked like the depth gauge tracing of the hurricane bank. The back and front are crotch walnut. Feel like I should mention again that Lewis...

    Shelves on the RP

Very helpful. Actually, I had viewed that before somewhere. Shame on me for noting the one caption: "Head in Rear." That SKB box that is just starboard of the "Crew Only" hatch forward of the bait tank is right where I had my SKB last time I was on board. There is really scant room for boxes on...

    Shelves on the RP

Building a box for upcoming Royal Polaris trip. Does anyone know the distance between shelves - expecting not to get a top shelf. Am planning a box that is narrower than an SKB, and with a drawer instead of an opening top. Need to know how many Plano 3700's I can design for, limited by how...

That is not the finish -- That is just alcohol to show the grain. Finish so far is reinforcing the inside with fiberglass with epoxy. Since epoxy does not stand up to UV well, the final several coats will be two part polyester resin. I am trying to make it so it can g=be dropped from waist...

    Ceramic ring sizing

Just a heads up. A kind contributor to my post about 200lb spectra for kite rig mentioned ceramic rings used to minimize wear in kite setups. So, I bought some. I wanted, I thought, the smaller 5/16" size. What arrived was marked 5/16", but measured about 1/2" ID. I wrote to the seller...

200 lb spectra and kite - weigh too much in light winds?

Scott, Just got some ceramic rings. They were advertised as either 1/2" of 5/16th inch. I ordered the 5/16, and the package is labeled 5/16, but the rings are 1/2" ID. Do you know: Did I order the best size? Don't want my ring to fall over the swivel I have on the end of my spectra. Are...

200 lb spectra and kite - weigh too much in light winds?

Dave, If I understood what was going on when I was on the kite: It seemed that the crewman controlling the line to the kite was in control of the height of the kite from the water and thus the contact of the bait to the water, with the sliding ceramic clip, both you and the crewman are working...

Question: Advice from someone who's opinion is experienced based says Soda Pop, So many variables. Would you share: Ringed or not? Crimp or knot? Does it make a difference if you are using 130# or 100# as to your knot or crimp?

200 lb spectra and kite - weigh too much in light winds?

I wonder. Since there is all that slack after a take, one would not need the shock absorption of mono. Don't know if it is more abrasion resistant. I think it is heavier. Anyone know for sure -if anything is for sure in fishing.
  551. locvetter

200 lb spectra and kite - weigh too much in light winds?

Someone whose opinion is experienced based says that sometimes the winds are too light for a kite to support 200# spectra -- better off with just 130. I recall having to take a mono topshot off of a kite rig on a trip with calms winds. I was thinking of having 100 or 150 yds of 200# on top of my...

    Re-gearing up, from scratch.

I would have bought two 20's but I could not find one in blue and rationalized that the added capacity of the 30 might be good for the long mono topshot for trolling. Alan Tani believes the 30 is a reel without a role: Not enough drag for 130, too big for 100.
