I'd never put a split ring on a live bait hook. Either buy your hooks ringed or solder on a ring... or just tie a Uni knot and don't cinch it down all the way.

    Another flat fall rigging thread

I just rigged a 120 gram Shimano flat fall. I removed the split ring and treble hook. I then used a #6 Rosco Butt ring and an 8/0 VMC 9260CB J hook. The butt ring was aligned and silver soldered in place. I washed and brushed the ring to remove excess flux. Bring on the tuna!

Hucklongfin....Yes, I solder/braze my own rings on the DTX’s. You have to be very careful with the flame angle to not blow a hole in the plastic belly when brazing the middle ring. I have seen on my trip a guys rear hook disappear after the stock split ring got worn through and the hook flew off.

It's pretty easy but does take a bit of learning curve. As stated above, my biggest issue was over heating the ring. Just as the ring turns red is when you apply the solder. Not after it's blazing hot. Thay was my experience anyhow

It takes a bit to get the hang of it, you'll trash a handful in the process, which is ok. Bronze is stronger but a much hotter welding temp. Closer to 1700 than 1200 for silver solder. To get the stainless that hot turns the rings black.

Took me a while to learn. For 56% silver solder it is considered low temperature and flows at 1200 deg F. For stainless rings, apply black flux liberally to the joint. Heat with pencil flame. A few seconds after the flux burns off, touch the joint quickly with the solder, should fill the joint...

If you are thinking about replacing the rings, keep in mind that "brazing" and "soldering" are two different joining methods. Many people use a silver alloy to join (braze) the rings, and refer it to "silver soldering", aka Hard Soldering or Silver Brazing. Soldering will not work for the...

    Replacing Trebles on Jigs

Hey Max, I would not recommend using split rings or using silver solder. Split rings will work for a while, however some will rust pretty quick and not be as strong. As for using silver solder, I would not recommend that either. Most silver solder you buy from stores like home depot are too...

Whats the best way to fine tune and iron?

Wiring Surface Iron is a hot ticket! Some fisherman swear by it, especially the Old School Coronado Yellow anglers. When I had alot more time on my hands I used to silver solder a smaller ring to the orginal eye of the jig, same principal as wiring, an extra swivel or kicking point. I still have...

    Replacing Trebles on Jigs

nope, i do it all the time... i use VMC 4X's i believe they were standard issue with tady 45's and salas 7X's... just be sure you put the hook back "EXACTLY" the way the old one came off. i believe it's supposed to be single on the flat side and double on the hump side....

Improving the Swim of Surface Iron, with out wiring

Totally agree dude..By far the most important is kick not color..My best jigs are the ones where 3/4 of the paint is gone...

    Brazing question

I'll second that. That bug has its teeth firmly embedded in me, too:). For the doubters on the silver to stainless solder/braze/sweat/whatever you want to call it, there's definitely a learning curve in developing your technique, but once you get it, you'll be bending hooks well before a ring...

    Live Bait Hook Knot

Solder them using 56% silver solder. It's quick, easy and plenty strong, my largest fish to date with my own ringed hooks went a bit over 175 and I lost a bigger one to broken line. You could TIG weld them but it takes experience and a fairly expensive welding machine. Solder takes a cheep...

    hook ringing

I have been soldering rings on hooks for the first time and noticed some balling on a couple. Is this due to the metal geeting to hot. Also, if you throw them into water right does it help to release the flux?

Who sells open eye siwash hooks sz 8/0 ????

I'm sorry. I meant to ask why? You can also silver solder your own. I've bought the Owner split rings but have not tackled the solder deal. I've got all the stuff. I run light singles all the way down to my 6lb rigs.

    Re-rigging a bonita/marauder?

thanks for the insight chris. If they don't track true, I'm thinking jumbo key chain.   Had to get two @ $10.99. I'll look into the welded ring/soldered ring and report back if they work/track well. What about the hook sizes?

    Re-rigging a bonita/marauder?

Be careful using Marauder/Bonito knock-offs, often they don't seem to track very well, and my be inclined to jump out off the water. I don't like using split rings for wahoo as they may open-up or come off when exposed to the pressure of a wahoo's bite. The best way to rig is with soldered...

putting the ring back in the thing

Can this be fixed by tomorrow night???

I did that same thing once. Busted the ring off the guide. I successfully glued it back in place using JB Weld (2-part putty epoxy). That was 5 years ago and I still haven't bothered to go get it fixed correctly. I figure if it ever breaks off again, I'll go do it. Don't use heat to solder...

    Jig Repair

http://www.ringedhooks.com will do it for you. I do it myself and it is easy. It just cost me some fillets. Go to a weld shop and show/tell them what you want to do. Get some 3/32 316ss wire (or whatever size you want). This is bare wire/rod that they use for heli arc welding. Get some...

    Brazing broken guides

I was wondering if stainless rings can be brazed. I have 3 rods that I have managed to break a ring at the solder points. I figured putting heat sinks on either side of the guide to keep the rod from getting too hot. I am just looking for a simple fix. Andy

Offshore Boat Senor Hefe Trapped in Korean / Mexican Tuna Seiner Pen

At 3:30am the boat Senor Hefe was heading south towards the 295 bank which is located about 62 miles off San Diego. The ride down was nice and calm as we headed with about 30 other sport-fishing boats for a jump on the early bite. On the way down we were going about 12 kt/hr and would arrive...
