Aftermarket Replacement Handle for Shimano Spheros?

Looks like I got a defective handle assembly for my Spheros 20000. OEM replacement handle on the Shimano website is $62.16. That's basically 1/3 the price of an entirely new reel. Just wondering if there is more cost effective replacement or a handle assembly that's so good, it's worth 1/3...

Medium vs Heavy Frame for 100#+

That is a great question. I haven't gotten that far yet. My local shop said it would be important to match the HXW with a properly sized rod in order to prevent the dreaded reel wobble (when a reel is too wide for its height). I'm open to recommendations if you got anything.
  22. J

Medium vs Heavy Frame for 100#+

Appreciate all the responses and info guys! The weight of the reel as well as the higher gear ratios is why I would prefer the HXW. Holding a 30 or 50 sized reel for long periods of time doesn't sound very appealing to me. The higher inches/crank also would allow me to slow down my retrieve...

Star Drag with Drags on Spool possible?

30# or 40# test for fishing irons in Socal

40#. Your 338 will definitely hold enough 40#. You don't need the spectra. You should probably stay away from spectra unless you've had a lot of practice throwing the iron and know your gear very well.

Powder Coated Lead Heads w/ Forged Hooks

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get some powder coated lead heads w/ forged hooks for fishing plastics on the slide. I was going to buy some powder coated lead heads from Seaforth, but the guy told me that the hooks would straighten out if they're fished on the slide...

    New member here, rod/reel question?

You should take a look at the Daiwa Saltist or Shimano Torium series for reels. As far as rods, the general consensus is Calstar or Seeker. Although, you can go cheaper with a Kencor.

    Tuna Poppers Too Big?

So, just to make sure that I'm getting the gist of the advice here: I should be getting 5" - 6" poppers. I was wondering if you guys had any comments on pattern/color or does it not matter because the attractant is the popping action and turbulance from the jig?
  112. J

    Tuna Poppers Too Big?

Yeah, the popper doesn't really have a high hook up rate, but I would like to increase my chances whenever possible. I got hit every cast, but didn't hook a single one. So, I was wondering if the Yozuri Bull GT (7 3/4") was just too big for school size YFT and Albies.

    Tuna Poppers Too Big?

Hello All, I just purchased some poppers from Charkbait.com. Three of them are particularly large (7 3/4"). I threw one of similar size last year on a 1.5 dayer and got bumped a ton, but no hookups. I was just wondering if these poppers are too large for 1.5 and 2.5 day trips and the 25#-35#...

    Setups for a 2 Dayer

I'm heading out on the Pac Star on Sunday night for a two day trip. I plan on taking a 25#, (2) 30#, 40# and Jig Stick. I was wondering if I'm missing something or if I'm taking too many. Also, does anyone know if they're hitting the surface iron or Yo-yo? This is the earliest I've ever been...

I'm not sure if this is the same thing, but I received an e-mail from a friend about this. It had pictures of the two labs and had the same story about them being inseperable as well as the story about them possibly being seperated at a shelter. Another person on the e-mail chain stated that...

    60# Setup

I'm looking for a 60# set up. I was originally looking at the HX, but have read a lot about the handle pressure at high drag. So, I was thinking about getting an EX 4/02. As for the rod, I was thinking about a Seeker 6465XH. Do you guys have any comments or advice as far as my...

    Tuna Poppers

Can you guys suggest some spinning reels and rods that would work well for this?
  123. J

    Tuna Poppers

I was just wondering what you guys thought about using a spinning out for poppers. I just think it would be easier to use than a conventional when you're using the jerk/reel method because of the slack in the line. You would have to use tension while you're stacking line. Thanks

    Tuna Poppers

A deckhand on a trip let me use a tuna popper last summer. I tried two different methods of using the popper. First I was just ripping it across the surface and it got hit a bunch of times, but never hooked up. The deckhand told me to jerk the popper and then wind, instead of just ripping it...

    Saltist 30TH for casting 40lb?

The 30th is super heavy. You'll wear yourself out if you're throwing for any good part of a day. You might want to reconsider the spectra backing also. Unless you're very experienced with throwing with iron, I would suggest going straight mono. It's very, very hard to get a bird nest out of...

    Torium 16 too small?

Yeah, I figured that I could get around the capacity issues with spectra. However, I was still wondering about his comment stating that the iron won't swim correctly because of the size of the spool itself. He said that the spool would be too small on retrieve and that the iron would basically...

    Torium 16 too small?

Hello all, I talked to a guy and he told me that the spools on a Torium 16 are too small to throw irons. He brought up the problem of line capacity, but I figured I could just use spectra backing to get extra line on the reel. Then he said that the iron wouldn't swim correctly because the...

  145. J

    Opinion on Penn 113

Do you have model names and numbers for the Diawas, Accurates and Avets. I would also be ok with spending the same price for some used reels as well. So, even if a reel is more expensive than my listed price, I'll probably be able to pick it up used.

    Reel Line Capacity
