    Question about fishing line

Are we talking bluefin? The bite is always changing, and trying to look at one year as a template for the next is not really that useful. That said, when the mid grade fish (40-100lb) want to start biting sardines 30-50lb has been pretty good, and having one of each set up is really, really...

    Blue jb hollow braid

White is a bit easier to work with, ie splicing, etc. but that said I really like yellow to follow line at night and pick out tangles. People like to talk smack about yellow, but most times they also can't pick a bait, so they're pretty easy to ignore.

100%, 30lb single strand wire is the way to go. 60lb colored JB is easier to thread wire into than white 100lb 16 strand with a latch or loop needle. Weird hollow loop tag issue

That's on the mainline side, 100lb JB, but the wear is a bit different. I'm making short looped sections to connect to 130-200lb fluoro via FG knot for casting stickbaits/poppers. Why? Because I'm doing this with a lever drag and don't want the leader material going into the tip at all, and...

That's the end of the tag after being reinserted and buried back in. The loop is clean when I finish it but after being fished/put under working loads it somehow pops back up and there's a bit of fuzz on the doubled section around it. Normally I'd say screw it and just fish it but I had an...

    Calico Rod for Hard Baits

I'm a big fan of the Phenix M1 Inshores for that. MH is good for the 140-170mm lures, H is good for 170-190mm. Good backbone to keep fish out of cover, good tip speed to both set hooks and keep them from pulling. Casts are buttery.

I have 100lb JB on my leverdrags for this, it's not the most fun. The JB packs pretty tight so it's hard to get it wet before casting just by pouring/spraying water on it. It doesn't have to be that tight as long as it's level, or at least not bunched up in the center. If anything concave it slightly to the edges and you're better off. With a little help from my SDLR friends... (rigging flatfall's)

One of the biggest benefits of bridling is that you give the jig the largest degree of freedom and remove the jigs weight from the hook, which limits the fish's ability to work the hook out by shaking it's head. Simply putting the hook through the jig eye is worse than using a good split ring...

Spooling Reels near landings, any recommendations?

FYI the diameters on those two braids are wildly different. For the 500, you'll get over 400y of 65 MC, probably close to 450y; with Izor 65lb you'll probably be looking at 250y or less. Izor is thick for its nominal size, MC is a little thinner than the next smallest Power Pro size.

    Split Rings

I get that, but unless you're on the water and in a pinch, tying to a split ring is pretty dumb when you can just buy a pack of solid rings and tie to that.
  106. RideHPD

    Split Rings

Yea, outside of them working into the eyelet there's no way you're going to be able to break one pulling on a fish with our gear. East Coast jigging and popping guys have landed way bigger fish than we've ever seen with split rings. If you think you're inventing the wheel you're way behind.

Counts mean nothing. The volume has been around, just tighter to the beach. Follow the temp charts and you'll see why. No one's really looking for them and they've been pretty mobile.

    Split Rings

Use Owners Ultra split rings if you're going to use split rings on those jigs. Don't necessarily need the strength, but because the eyelets on flatfalls, etc. are pretty thin and Hyperwires aren't stiff enough to not open a little and allow the eyelets to work their way into the split ring. Then...

That's exactly what I was thinking, basically a cut down trash can inside filled with saltwater and ice. Match the salt content to minimize osmosis and keep the fish really cool, target is 30 F. Trinidad 20a and 14a smoothness gone after one trip?

Runout refers to the degree to which a piece of rotating machinery spins off-axis, IE how far skew the long axis is of a spinning bar with the direction perpendicular to the orbit. When the load on the drag stack is reduced, you don't feel anything. When you apply that load what you're feeling...
  127. RideHPD

Trinidad 20a and 14a smoothness gone after one trip?

Crank the drag down and under load you start to feel the runout in the mainshaft. It's pretty normal. If there's resistance when cranking then a bearing is blown, but just being able to feel the gears so to speak sounds normal. Pop it open and try to remesh the gears and you'll notice it more.

Or an 8 or 10, they work great too with 50lb braid. At the very least not with a levelwind, the fact that it's non-disengaging really roughens up the effective drag output from braid snapping over itself.

best STRONG circle hook for blue fin?

The problem with small hooks is that the gap is so small that on occasion the hook point can bury itself in the jawbone. Have you got behind the rifle and see what the chassis feels like prone, seated, etc.? They feel very different, and you might find your tastes change once you shoot it for a bit. Still may love the KRG, but it's something to be aware of. Personally, I hate chassis now and prefer slanted...

    Fish processing prices?

It's not, 53% comes from 35lbs/65lbs, and that fish was smaller than the 65 weighed. 35/58 puts me just over 60%. That's really what I'm saying, even with generous margins for speed and wounds, I still don't see where that amount disappears from unless they're not including bellies.

FWIW, I weighed out the last bluefin I cleaned to see what my yield was. 58 lbs gutted turned into 35 lbs of skinned and trimmed filet with no blood meat, and that was before I spooned the carcass. Whole weight on the biggest of the bunch was 65lbs, so even being as conservative as possible...

Yea that's Oliver Ngy, rod's an SS Ulua and IIRC that lure's a 3.5oz Trigya Pencil and he still got about 30-40 yards. That's the situation I'm talking about when the fish walk to the boat, then it really doesn't matter. You want a smaller reel.

Tac 20 and 25 are the same frame size, 25 is wider. What makes the Mak and VISX reels so strong is that they're overbuilt, including the spools. Line Weight to Fish Weight?

    Line Weight to Fish Weight?

You're making this way too complicated. Fish as heavy as you can get away with. Heavier line, more drag a bait has to pull around, the slower it swims. Often you need to step down to get them running, anglers with better bait handling skills may be able to get bit on heavier line. For bigger...

That's wildly inaccurate. You can get somewhere between 450-500y of 100lb JB hollow on a 16 which is pretty much the same diameter, and for sure 600 yards of 60lb JB Hollow will fill it. Basil's number for the 20 is either 600 or 700y of 100lb JB.

I'm talking about 3oz+ floating lures, where surface area creates a different casting impulse than bombs or irons, irons are easy. Distance isn't even the problem, albeit more is always better. I can still get 80 yards (measured) relatively easy while on solid ground. The problem comes from a...

Has anyone tried it? I've been playing around with the Tac12 I use for that purpose and so far it's made basically no difference. I've consumed pretty much every bit of info on the subject but I think it's a simple physics problem, in that there's too much inertia for a latent system to be...

    Trinidad 14a capability

The H rated rods are perfect for 30, I use an 869 myself with a Trini 16A. That said, IMO, 30lb is where the bigger Trinidad's (16N/16/20/30) start to outweigh the smaller ones (10/12/14). To the drag is smoother in that range and they have more cranking power.
  416. RideHPD

    Trinidad 14a capability

The rod's a bit light for 30lb, it's a 12-30, the sweet spot is 20lb. I use the MH for 25lb and even that rod doesn't quite have the backbone for 30lb. It'll be fun for schoolies but not really the right rod for the job.

Speaking for the Axis, I'd go up a bit. The X2H is great for 60lb, and can still fish 80 decently, but you're pretty deep into the backbone by then. I'd go with the X3H, that's really where you're getting into a rod that can actually do the job.

If just for wahoo jigs maybe look at the 869XH Hybrid, that rod is really popular for that application. 820XH Axis would be good for it too, the longer Phenix rods have a bit better tip bend to them for casting jigs.

Buy a handle for a Trini 16/20/30 and put it on the Tranx. Tranx 500 has the Trini 10/12/14 handle, which is shorter. You need to be conscientious of where the handle is so you don't kick the reel into gear casting, but you get all the torque back for the HG. Makes it almost too easy.

    Overnights fishing BFT at night??!

Plenty of boats were doing it, but leaving around 4pm and getting in around 10pm. It's not that it's not possible to fish before 430-5am, just saying that the boats aren't looking for fish before then most often. They may happen to drift over some, but not common. That's been my experience with...

    Overnights fishing BFT at night??!

Could be wrong, but as far as the SD fleet goes I don't think they're even close to the BFT neighborhood. That and if they're overnight boats running every day, think the billed capt is sleeping until the am to meet CG reqs so they're not even "fishing" until 5ish.

Star drag as pictured, yeah? I figure something like a standard carbon jig stick considering lure weight.

Read some of your reports and was curious, what rod/reel/line set up have you been using for that size class? The pictures and write ups have been wonderful, despite the suffering.

Major Surf Event - Be Careful

    Braid line and backlash

    1 and only 1 Popper???

I don't know if you're going to find one, it's going to have to have a pretty large diameter to weigh that much and still displace enough water to float. If you do it's going to be a pretty expensive lure most likely.

    Braid line and backlash

I use 100lb JBHC to get back some capacity. There's another reason why the heavy braid casts better I'll illustrate now. I had a hunch about this for a while but proved it to myself recently. My "oh man this is gonna hurt" popper set up uses a Talica 12. I've tried 60lb JBHC to 100lb ppro...

    1 and only 1 Popper???

I tend to side with Jaimie in that I'd rather fish a bit smaller popper. My suggestion would be a Halco 135 over a 160, probably in that bonito colorway. There are some bigger yellowfin around now, and they've been eating the 160 pretty good, but if they get on microbait, they may only want the...

    Braid line and backlash

There can also be heat damage to braid away from the break/tangle that's not visible. Can be a risk, IMO good to go with heavier braid to prevent them and have more room for safety.

Looking for a Big Bluefin INDICATOR...

Robert's really giving you the best advice as far as improving your fishing. If you want proof socal archives the counts. Find the best trips so far this year, then look at the days prior. I'd bet at least 40% came right after a period of subpar counts and lower rider numbers. Find the days...

Looking for a Big Bluefin INDICATOR...

I'll play a bit nicer. From home you can look at temp, chloro, wind, and swell charts. More time on the water and you'll learn what conditions will look like in the future, and what the forage situation will look like. From there you can come up with a pretty good idea with what the fish will...

    Knob on Trini/Tranx

The EVA can make you more prone to blistering, as some can be a bit abrasive when wet. Like Dan said, depends on how you hold it. Soldering Rings - The Movie!

I was looking at the wrong brazing chart, for 57 upper end looks like 750C, and there's a temp differential between the base and solder based on heat capacity, but even still, it really shouldn't be an issue either way. I'd rather not have a super hot ring hanging around any longer than need be...

Offshore Fishing in SD after a large hurricane swell

Holdfasts release at 75F, so whatever kelp might've been ripped out is probably already adrift. Hopefully we get a push of warm water up the line and that wahoo the Pac Voyager got won't be a one-off. One can hope.

    Soldering Rings - The Movie!

If it's just getting hot enough to melt the solder you're not even getting to 500C, I really don't think you're getting any cracking. The strength should be more than suitable either way, water quench more just for safe handling.

Wahoo on Rapalas aboard long range boats

Think you meant 4X, the ST-66 are 4X, and the heavier ST-76 are 5X, don't think they make anything stronger than those. The 76's are gnarly. IMO it's better to take the time to make sure the point is down, I've had the points stick in the body on occasion when oriented the other way. And it's...

Depends not only on proximity to the nearest tower (so best range changes as you go up/down coast) but also atmospherics, so changes day by day. Under 10mi at best, usually seems to be about 5ish.

FG knot viable instead of wind ons in a pinch?

It's not just a pinch solution, you can find plenty of people in the LR forum that prefer it over wind-ons. I've tied it with 130 hollow and everything below, you just need to apply more tension when weaving the wraps. Hollow instead of solid, more tension. Hard fluoro instead of mono, more...

How to fish the Flat Fall

The 3 hook limit they talk about in that Q&A is for freshwater, as pertains to A-Rigs for freshwater bass. For salt you're allowed as many as you want, as long as you're not rock fishing, then you're only allowed 2.

If it's a Salas, what Larry said. Salas let's paint get in the holes, clean those out so the jig spins well and it'll work a lot better. I'll give another hint; for those not using clips, you should. Every jig swims with them, some just better than others.
