Smaller tuna have a smaller % yield, anything over 100# should be around 40-45%. Smaller grade fish usually around 35% maybe a tad bit more.

I like to experiment with different ways of doing things, I have some single strand wire I'm going to try also. But probably the easiest way would be to just use a 175# harness, the ones with the black boot as opposed to the red boot. I've had better luck with those.

The one thing I will say in my defense of being a wahoo tackle hoarder, is on my trips I freely let everyone on board use my jigs, bombs, marauders, cowbells, and dtx's, and I tie some sweet single strand bait leaders for those don't have any.

The fever will keep getting worse! All my wahoo, jigs, bombs, surface iron , wire leaders, wire, crimps, tools and all wahoo related goodies are in 2 tackle bags. Combined weight about 175 pounds! And I'm getting some of the Jri bombs also, it's starting to be borderline insanity!

Cal sheets probably has the best line winder on the west coast, Ray Lemme made it. He was able to get 525 yards of 80# izor solid on my tac 16. He was able to get 70 more yards on it than the place where I bought it.

I advise to get the bigger tiburon T-bar handle too with it, my tac 20 with blueprinting, a lower low gear, upgraded dogs and handle were a tad bit over $300. I have that on a 8 foot uc raptor wrapped at bob sands. Really sweet lupe combo, great for throwing bombs and jigs for wahoo also.

I made one a few years back out of a purple and gold flatfall, put a jobo hook on it, and wrapped a purple and a gold mylar skirt around it. Caught a wahoo on it at alijos. Casted like a bullet and sank fairly quickly.

We had a gold glow color nomad that had 21 wahoo, and was still usable. Not much color left, but was still swimming. You couldn't keep the wahoo off it!

I had a stud wahoo at Guadalupe that had one half down it's throat too!

The only thing I would recommend is using a 175# harness, no changes to the hooks or anything else. Trolls deeper with the lighter harness. I think next time I may use 80# floro instead of 100# to gain even more depth!

They worked well, one guy had his clicker off, went in the galley for a second and was bit. Don't know how far the fish was drug before it came off, plus I saw one other come off when the angler had slack line. But they accounted for 35-40 trolled wahoo with stock hooks.

Larry Brown had a write up about the Nomad's on a Red Rooster trip he was on. Apparently the large Madscad caught several wahoo while trolling, and quite a few on the large Dtx minnow. You can look at the Rooster's Facebook page and see it.

I used them last year on my 10 day on the Royal star, they got bit every rotation. The Black/purple and Orange /black got bit equaly as well at alijos. There weighted and swim well. The deckhands liked them.

In regards to the smaller bait, according to everinham bros bait report, there are 5-8 inch sardines available at dana point. That bait is most likely being caught closer to dana point. Hopefully the bait situation changes for the better fairly soon.
