I agree with everyone else I have been on 3 5 days on the shogun and honestly cant say I have any complaints at all have always caught fish and been comfortable. The food is excellent and Aaron and Russ are both awesome captains.

Don't think you'll be disappointed can be very slow at times real key is just keeping a bait in the water and a positive attitude.

The bunks are all nice and dry I have never seen a drop of water in any of the bunks or rooms.

It was upto 70 degrees at times, there was wind upto probably 12 knts at times and it was definitely fairly chilly in the evening. One morning we did have a slight sprinkle for a few hours. Now that I am back in nor cal and its raining everyday I am definitely missing it.

It was definitely a great trip pretty sure everyone onboard had a great time. I have been doing that trip for 3 years now and theres a great group that comes back every year. Can't wait to go back again.

My guess is that the tuna were probably all just shy of 100lbs

I fished 80 on a phenix black Diamond hybrid 700xxh on a recent trip to the lupe worked perfectly landed fish upto 140lbs with ease.

Thanks for all the reply's guys already looking forward to the trip next year. Surprisingly the trip has already sold out, glad I got on it again. Not sure if we will fish the lupe again, but I am sure it will be a great time.

I have both of those rods personally I feel the xh is more versatile the h is too light for any yoyo fishing. I use my xh for yoyo and throwing iron and bombs for wahoo also I fish it as a 50lb bait stick. I have seen tuna over 100lbs landed on the xh.

Personally I'd go with the 600 regular non narrow version for the increased line capacity of heavier 80 or 100lb spectra. I am by no means an expert that is just my personal preference.

I'll second the 700xh being too light get a 700xxh also makes a awesome rod for lighter dropper loop fishing aswell.

I have 3 jx raptors I use one for surface irons one for yoyo with 65lb spectra 25 yards of 50lb and the last one I use for a 40-60lb bait rig. My favorite reel I have the HX as well but prefer to fish the smaller jx feels better in your hands.

I bring alot of jerky smoked fish and candy bars and share with the deckhands there always super applicative and thankful.

I like my jx raptor for catching yt off the bottom get the head coming towards the boat then hit low gear and the rail super easy. I see guys smoking them on single speeds but when the bite is hot I like having the low gear to keep from getting fatigued.

Yea I hear that barbless are alot more friendly for catch and release on yourself, however the amount of yt that you will loose makes it a toss up. I will be on the new years trip again next year. Looking forward to your report and good luck!

No offense but if your not sealing a wood lure its not going to be worth a shit because it will absorb water like a sponge. You need to seal the wood with primer or oil of some kind.

No bolt cutters both hooks both barbs one pull each hook shank had a piece of spectra tied to it and he jerked them both out at the same time.

Captain Arron rigged the hook up with some 200lb spectra and did the line method and jerked it out. Looks nasty and bruised up pretty good but all wad well and it didn't hinder my fishing ability.
