The Rooster is more than likely headed there next week.
90J and a Trinidad 30 or Talica 16, depends on the species.
But it’s so fun.
Tons of fish out here, they just won’t bite
Every trip I go on, I’ve seen it work for Bobby for 7 years, it’s easy enough to do quickly for me, and it works.
Up 3 feet and an overhand...
There’s only one place I can think of, Guadalupe.
It wouldn’t matter in many cases, Bill. A few weeks ago we rolled up on a foamer and the bait ran to us for cover and the tuna followed. We had...
I love that sharing rail space on a 90-110 foot vessel with a crew member is a downer to some people. How much space does one man take up?
The term “bring in the mule” wouldn’t be around if it weren’t for deckhands reeling in 95% of people’s fish when asked to do so.
Actually, it is. Last week, for instance, we had an Angler who was “Mute” he had little to no hearing and could not talk, he always used sign...
I’ve gladly handed off countless amounts of fish to passengers whom are having a tough day, never done it prior, never fought a fish on a 9ft...
It wasn’t an insult by any means. You had high expectations of catching tuna, when you didn’t, your bar was lowered for a successful trip, by...
The only person lowering the bar, is you. You had high expectations on what you saw online and made that your bar of having a good trip.
But I’ve been seeing online that the BF fishery is wide open with straight 60-80lb tuna, we shoulda tried for those. Captains will take...
I haven’t read all 22 pages of this thread but most Overnight Operations have what’s known as a “Night Driver” who’s sole responsibility is to...
Thanks, Bill, bummed I wasn’t able to fish June Heat with you this year.
Yeah I’d say it works. 75 over 200 and 3 over 300 would say it’s pretty solid.
Water was 63 when we were there. It Was good Yellowtail fishing, but not great. We had to spend 3 days at the 23 to try and put together a...
I love Pappy’s overhand knot.
They wouldn’t book the trips if there wasn’t a demand for them. The recent 1.5s added to the Roosters schedule are almost sold out.
Finally, someone with some common sense. You want to spend 350 and sleep in a coffin in a sauna, feel free. For an extra hundred bucks you can...
A 1.5 is damn near 500.00 after you get done with everything. I think the long trips are and “ebb and flow” type of thing. The last few years...
I like a wee bit of mono for “stretch” in pro-longed battles. Less chance of that smaller hook pulling 4 feet from gaff on lighter line.
Nope, never, all the fish are on the stern, always. The bow is for chucking plugs on 9footers.
If you’re flying, you can have the processors pack you 50lb boxes and stick them under the plane for only the cost of extra baggage.
I’d get on any boat you can that fits your schedule. They all talk to one another and most of the time are fishing is the same zones.
I don’t think it changes the gear one bit, either way you’ll want a few smaller rigs, a medium sized one and a larger rig.
300 bucks a day to the Panga driver
Boats are coming out of maintenance, the fishing down south isn’t “straight cows” and you can really only talk about Bluefin fishing so much....
Trust me, a majority of it still stays on the boats.
The limit is 6 on trips from 3 days all the way up to 16.
I’d go with a Valient or a Talica
I’ve always been told they swim better in the prop wash. They work, I won’t say they don’t, I’ve seen them get out fished on any given day.
What I’ve noticed on the smaller vessels is the availability of rod storage. I’d narrow it down to the least amount of set-ups that have the...
The Albacore are back, oh wait, looks like the maintenance didn’t go so well.
Shoot, this year a trip was lucky to get more than 2, let alone 30. There was a few hits for great fishing, sure. But overall I’d say it was a...
40lb fly line rig
60/80 fly line rig
What about a Boss 600, Goka? The valiant isn’t the fastest reel on the planet either.
heard stories but never seen it myself, the chef before I came around worked in a Sushi establishment in Hawaii and taught me what I know...
I’m sure I would have heard about it by now if someone came down with something in the previous 6 years, but I haven’t, so I’ll go with the latter...
Wahoo turns to Mush after it’s frozen and thawed and mush doesn’t make very good sashimi. Our wahoo goes into the RSW and chilled for a few...
I sashimi Wahoo almost every trip and never have given anyone “peanut butter Shotgun”
PV is tough right now. Just fished it for 6 days and got 3 bites for 40 anglers.
The fish wasn’t cared for properly and more than likely over cooked. I’ve eaten and prepared numerous large BSB and they turn out great if done...
Calstar 7470H and an Accurate Boss 600.
Light loads and fishing on the uptick for the season, if you ever want to go, the time is now.
It’s better than being at work.
I’d do multiple trips on an overnight/1.5 on different moon phases.
They were at Jamie bank where everyone gets signal, we will see how the WiFi hold up at the bank as all of the boats use the same WiFi service.
In the case with 80lb, I think more are lost, than gained. You’ve gotta hook em first, and sometimes they just won’t eat the rope. Quite the...
Flat Clam weather and Cabo within sight, I love that fishing destination.
80lb was also the cause of a lot of losses on that same trip.
The water that is made on the boat is better than the water that you’ll bring on the boat, waste of space IMO.
Still slower that the Rooster...........
People knowing what they’re doing and stepping left/right is a huge factor. I was sawed off on my Grande BFT this summer as 15 flat-falls ended...
This year in November there was zero sign of Tuna there.
I think we got more Super Cows, than cows, honestly. Finished the trip with 3 over 3 and the possibility that we should have broken the boat...
Talica 16 and 80lb. Took him, his brother and JT WAY more than an hour. Hell of a fish, not to mention the brothers Romaine boated a 290 with the...
9 fish, 90-175. Slower today. Don’t stress the reports, just go fishing.
I guess the old adage of “Assume” has gotten me. Not here to argue or pick a fight just mentioning something I thought was peculiar. Carry on....
Next time you write a report for the internet, you may want to leave out the part where you fished where you shouldn’t have been fishing. Just...
I’ve been at the bank twice this season so far. One trip we had WiFi for about 3 minutes, the other we had it for a few hours. It works when it...
Plenty of room on the Red Rooster Fly:Fly into Cabo. Lower Banks/PV. Father/Son trip of a lifetime.
Pappy got a cow on the June heat trip with one.
If you don’t mind paying 15 bucks a pop, the Pelagic socks are pretty nice.
5 cows, handful in the 150 range and a couple handfuls of fish over 100. The goal of the trip was to get everyone a 100lb+ fish. I think we were...
Some are bullet proof and continuously swim and catch some are the “one and done”.
2 wahoo rigs
That’s all you really need.
They’re extremely fragile as I’ve seen many catch one fish and then become completely useless. IMO they get bit because they are deeper in the...
When they’re biting you could troll anything and they’ll get bit.
It’s still slow, Small fish and a shot at a big one in the AM. Looks like it’s gking to be a slow year for sure.
“Mike, I’ve havemt seen the bank this dead in decades”
My rent payment/life is dependent on Long Range Sportfishing, id think I have valid points.
As many people have stated, it’s a service...
I wish that were the case, unfortunately, it’s not.
Yes, The fishing sucks down south currently and unless something changes, unfortunately, I could see more trips being canceled.
Actually my father was a long haul truck driver so I know all about it, try again.
Why should it matter what we made on a yearly basis? If we...
It’s none of your damn business what we make on a yearly income for being away from our families 2/3 of the year.
Stick to the variety trips.........you’ll catch something if the fishing stays in its current cycle. Or fish PV on a shorter trip, if it sucks...
Well for your and I’s sake, let’s hope the ocean decides to do a complete 360 and we have something to be thankful for next Thanksgiving.
If you can’t afford to tip 15%...........you shouldn’t be fishing.
Here’s some info, Lower banks was dry as could be, Bank was dead as I’ve ever and I just returned from the toughest 15 day I’ve encountered in my...
Plenty of room on the Red Roosters long schedule. We are rolling South with 14 people next trip and are running all of our scheduled 15 day...
We have that as well on the Rooster.
Does this mean they are still weeks away or they’ll be shipping ASAP?
I’m guessing no WiFi as KVH changed their service map last year on the fleet unknowingly.
Any idea when the 500x will begin shipping?
I stand corrected. Alijos Rocks
Water Temps at an all time high, buffer zone in question, will be an interesting winter, exploratory trip anyone?
Is a guide available to what stores will be receiving the different colors available.
Prob down at the 13 fathom spot
Don’t forget Uncle Lisi
29 other Anglers and Seven crew.......
14 is non exsistant, 20 is light. Eeeesh
Did you see him in a dream? He’s moved on from the industry as of right now. I wish him nothing but luck in his future endevours and will miss...
Now this sounds like a story I’d like to hear.
Stuff happens and schedules change in this industry. It’s part of the gig, you’ll be in very good hands with Mike. He doesn’t fish as well as I...
Sorry, boys, I’ll be at home. I’ll see you at the dock on sat though.
I may be there, I may not. Sill schedule changes.
Jeff has the better surface surface irons in his quiver for sure.
I predict people will be getting their eggs scrambled.
Oops, this was supposed to be in the other thread about a 3 day trip catching a scooter.
I can see it now, the internet will be selling trips based off of one random Wahoo more than likely plucked off of a kelp patty. Wide open...
I love number 5
Flip a coin because either spot could be hero or zero at this point of the season.
Change the split rings on them, they’re junk.
It fell on its face a few days ago, I was told it’s the first days of the new moon is when fishing is best.
Totally, it won’t be the last time it happens to me or anyone else. But like you said, when chasing trophies, it just stings that much more.
One thing I think people are missing is the comfort factor and the price of overnight trips in this conversation. I just got back this morning...
All crew has one of those jackets, not the 200lb club version, but the same jacket none the less. Yes, Paul was generous one year and gave me a...
20 lb school sized Yellowfin or 200lb Bluefin....tough choice.
You best bet when they start biting better everyone will be fishing them.
It was a 50/50 mix of people that I talked to today prior to the boat leaving on a 7 day.
Some wanted a fish of a lifetime, some wanted to catch...
The couple cows that the Red Rooster got on the way home in March were on leftover big baits from the buffer zone. I know this was ages ago, but...
The boats have backed off of posting numbers concerning their catch at Lupe for very good reason. It’s going good, otherwise 3/4 of the fleet...
The same thing that has always worked.......Sardines.
I don’t see a need for numerous hooks, I’ve seen jigs with 5 hooks on them this year get bit, then inevedibly get dumped. IMO I’d rather have one...
Sorry, Steve, can’t work them all. I have a feeling you’re about to have an awesome 3.5 days at Lupe. Get yourself a Cow Yellow for me.
What his friend didn’t tell him was that their is only 20 people on the trip.
Less Passengers equates to higher fees.....duh!
Ha ha ha only on BD can a man be looking to book a trip on the 105.
I’ll be there, see you 4 Prime Ribs from now!
Why didn’t you just go fishing on another boat and have the intrepid transfer the money?
I’ll be there with a smile on my face.
Thank you to everyone and their kind words.
It’s not easy what we (sport fishing chefs) do, but we love it, otherwise we wouldn’t do it. It’s...
Why are you digging for a story that isn’t there? It’s been told by many, and now the evacuee herself.
Bobs, went to his parking, let’s be real.
Thanks again, everyone.
I know it was a tough trip to say the least, but sometimes, that’s how the...
Shoot, #28 has 5 fish in the picture alone.
It’s changed, you’ll see on Sat.
7 crew on board, if crewman A knows your on your second set of tags, you move on to crewman B, when B tells you No, you ask the galley assistant,...
If a boat limit is caught prior to you having your limit, someone is being a bad angler.
Which is how a 200 fish over limit is very easily achievable, the fact that individuals weren’t fined in this case is absurd.
That’s where you’re wrong. 2 dorado count as 5 fish towards your 30 fish limit.
If every angler on this specific trip caught two dorado on the way home their numbers are drastically changed as far as limits are concerned.
We will miss you, soda, but your health is way more important than one trip!! Get better and we will see you next year.
Spinner blades equate to slowing the bomb down, which in turn, equals less bites. The faster you wind, the more bites you get.
Cut the blade off, it slows it down.
Uhhhhh, I lost my tags and need a new set. 40 fish later.......
If you have rain gear, bring it. I saw more rain down in the lower zone this year than I have in my previous 4 combined. All day monsoon type...
What ever they’re named, they’re delicious.
If only we could get 20lb’ers
Although we always have the most delicious option, Threadfin Sculpin!!
Someone call the of
Wahoo is on the menu for enchiladas and tacos.........but only if they’re there and I can get a few.
Soooooo, besides Budlight and Diet Coke, what would y’all like to eat?
It’s been a gnarly year down south.
I prefer the fly-home trips, as a matter of fact, I work my schedule around them. June Heat will be he only ride home trip for me this year....
I love it when people love to criticize marijuana, yet have bottles of “happy pills in their state rooms.
Ugh, does this mean I have to come back to work? I’m really enjoying the married life in Cozumel.
The new Nomad trolling lure has been the “IT” lure of the season. It’s out trolled other lures by vast numbers.
Unfortunately, he also caught the biggest YFT on the Rooster.
The cows bit leftover “big baits” from down below, we had a nice stop of biting bluefin on the sardine as well. These schools were going to be...
This was the tail end of the Loftus and Martin trip. Fishing down below was tough, real tough, Aaron made a decision to finish up fishing the...
I’m not sure how local 180 miles is.
Many people are forgetting one thing....A sometimes bumpy three or four day trip home.
Or maybe the internet/phones were down because of satellite coverage?!? Some people may be reading too much into this.
False: The internet service provider for the Long Range fleet decided to change their service area, thus negating a huge area down south. They...
Nice write up, Joe. On the recent Accurate trip Gary Teraoka didn’t use one inch of florocarbon and had a great trip.
See you in June.
Bring everything you have for your tackle box, we will find you a spot that you are happy with. Multiple boxes are on the deck each trip, yours...
What is your exact question about said rack?
I prefer to call it my meat stick, it catches everything.
Wahoo Sashimi is excellent
Depends on the jig and how willingly you're able fish it with the knowledge that it may never come back.
You may as well make jerky out of it at that temp.
I've learned my Wahoo fishing techniques from Bob Cherry.
95% of the time you're getting bit right next to the boat, Mike. Why cast it so far?...
Yes, I did send my Tn 40 to Shimano, they were broken into and my reel was stolen. I was given a Talica 16 for the stolen reel.
I'll buy you all a beer.
I'd pass on the Tranx, if you want a bass reel, just buy a bass reel.
7470 H and a Trinidad 20 is my slaying combo.
I cut every spinner off. Spinners = Drag
The big, ugly, metalic head, the 7 strand wire leader it comes with, its hydro-dynamics and the bland skirts. That's what's wrong with the Bombs,...
Just because the boat has a permit, doesn't mean it's going there.
If you haven't bought Wahoo bombs already, buy the ones available on the Boat. Those catchy bombs are a joke IMO.
Don't forget to bring your...
Ball Bag Powder
You'll also have to crap in a bucket and roast outside all day.
Bring your water bottles for the deck.
Hate to burst any bubbles, but Cheffy won't be changing any sheets, he will have the BIG BOY pants on and working the deck.
Great rental gear is available via Maria in the office. don't let the tackle shops have their way with You by selling you stuff that you will not...
The boat sure is looking nice.
Maybe a portion of the problem was the high expectations of a fishing trip, to a place, where soooooo many threads predict great fishing will...
No, but there should be.
I must be missing something........
This is the trip to be on if you enjoy a delicious cup of coffee. Not much Folgers will be brewed on this trip, if any at all.
No problem, buddy. Ooooooooook
I got you, soda. I'm the one who does the ordering anyways. How many would you like for yourself?
How much do you make?
Lord knows we receive "the whole shaft" sometimes as well, with the weather and all.
I'll be there. Don't forget the Orange and Black bombs.
Said no one who has ever worked on a boat.
If you can afford to pay 4K to go fishing, you can afford to tip the crew.
1 trolling rig
2 50lb jig/bomb rigs.
That's all you need.
Accurate super 12
Separate names with a comma.
