Mark, Thanks for the help on Thursday. Clark said it was WFO from the get go and they ended up plugged and then some. Fish are still being caught in good numbers 100 plus miles south of WP, so it ain't close to over. All of Ilwaco boats are shutting down, but I am pretty sure you guys have a...

10/3 CR tuna. 48 fish in 3 hours with newbies.

After a slow Friday, I was not too optimistic about Saturday. We ran to 46.00 x 125.00 (The Corners) and got a bait stop going within 5 minutes. It never slowed down and around 3 hours later both our boxes and a big kill bag were full of larger tuna. The commercial guys 10 miles outside of...

    9/30 CR tuna. WFO.

I got a text from my guys around 2 that they had a 1.5 hour bait stop and were "beyond plugged". They were around 60 miles or a bit more NW of Ilwaco. We have had very solid fishing for a few weeks and it appears to be getting better. This could be on hell of an October. Mike C

    CR 8/27 tuna report. WFO.

I don't think it matters much. A buddy 40 miles south and 90 miles out said it is WFO everywhere outside the 125 line- like the 125.04 our out to the 129.

    CR 8/27 tuna report. WFO.

I just heard back from my captain. WFO. Jumpers everywhere. Landed 46 PIGS and lost another 90. Mark Coleman's crew killed them as well. Pretty much anywhere on the 125 line was WFO. A commercial buddy had over 1,000 at 3:30 PM when I talked to him. I can't wait for boat call tomorrow...

    8/19 CR/WP tuna. WFO.

Greg, We have two huge refrigerated fishboxes that are cold enough to freeze fish solid if we are not careful. Henriques boats are made for tuna, so they have huge boxes and cockpits. We are sitting out the storm, but should be running again on Monday, lets hope they moved in a little closer...

    8/19 CR/WP tuna. WFO.

I just heard from my captain that it was "wfo x 4" today (first time he has ever said that), and they were running in with 70 plus tuna. Fishing was as good as it ever gets at 46.10 x 126.10. Coleman had pretty much the same fishing a lot closer to home. Another buddy did 50 plus at the...

Ilwaco tuna 8/1-8/3. Great to decent fishing.

Fishing is hit or miss right now. Wed we ran up to 46.50 x 125.30 and did not see a fish all day. Thursday my captain ran south to 45.20 x 125.20 and it was WFO and they plugged the boat. The good news is that fish seem to be moving up and in. Mike C

Ilwaco tuna 8/1-8/3. Great to decent fishing.

There were good numbers of fish at 46.30 x 125.30 before the wind started blowing. They were hanging down at 15-25 feet and only came up for 1/2 hour when it went WFO. Running Wed and will try and post up a report. Mike C

Ilwaco tuna 8/1-8/3. Great to decent fishing.

More weird fishing today. TONS of tuna and bait on sonar 15-25 feet down at 46.30 x 125.30. Today was the most bait balls I have seen in my 16 years of tuna fishing. It blew up for 1/2 hour from 1:30-2 and then died. We put 13 on the deck before it died. Mark Coleman clobbered them out of...

Ilwaco tuna 8/1-8/3. Great to decent fishing.

Yesterday was more of the same, but a sloppy ocean and lots of wind made converting hard. My captain is headed to the Astoria Canyon today, as Coleman has been doing good there. Let's hope they moved up, as 80 mile runs get old real fast. Mike C

Ilwaco tuna 8/1-8/3. Great to decent fishing.

The tuna are around in good numbers SW of the CR (45.20-46.10 x 125.10-40), the farther SW you go, the more fish there are. We ran into a bunch of jumpers on 7/31 and put 40 in the boat with three VERY good fishermen (one guy got 10 on iron) and a couple of guys who are still learning. We...

7/23 CR tuna report. WFO. It is on.

65-80. The braid not what breaks, the topshot is, we generally run 40 lb fluoro, but my captain brought his meat stick yesterday and was getting bit better than anyone on 60 lb. We have caught tons and tons of fish tying hooks straight to braid when it is WFO. What kind of reel is that? It...

7/23 CR tuna report. WFO. It is on.

Good fishing yesterday and today, despite the sloppy seas. Our crew put 36 on the deck yesterday (including a BFT) and 30 today, despite 17-22 knots of wind, which pretty much killed our bait bite, due to the 1.2-1.7 knot drift. It is only going to get better from here on out. Mike

7/23 CR tuna report. WFO. It is on.

Tuna have finally shown up in good numbers. Coleman has been killing them for around a week. This week we had a 20 fish day, a 29 fish day, and then all hell broke loose and Captain Clark and our crew had a wide open bite yesterday and put 71 on the deck, most on bait. A buddy nearby got 79...

Are there any big, fast, 6 pack charters out of San Diego?

Ali, I wasn't going to say anything but people got pretty far afield. We have gotten pretty spoiled fishing for albacore in the NW where we leave the dock at 7 AM, run out at 27 knots, and can plug the boat and be back in 6-8 hours- speed and tuna go together well. My captain, Clark Von...

Are there any big, fast, 6 pack charters out of San Diego?

We run 27-28 knots every day the ocean lets us (75% load on our CAT C-12s) in WAY worse seas and our bait does just fine. I don't mind the slow, multi day boats, but I suck at sleeping on a boat, so I am usually pretty worn out after a couple of nights, plus it is way easier to justify a family...

3/19 CR bottom fishing report. Excellent fishing.

My crew and I were tired of sheltering in place and decided to take Shake N Bake on a shakedown run for bottomfish. Is April too early for SD tuna?

Rod, Thanks for the info. We are going to wait and see how the season shapes up before we make a decision- we already booked the New Lo Ann for the fall and might just have to make two trips. If SD fishing keeps up, Shake N Bake is going to get a new winter home in SD. Mike C

    Saturday Tuna Report

Maybe because most of us don't really have the gear and the knowledge to tow someone safely. I remember when I was a kid that a number of deaths on the CR bar came from boats under tow. The Sea Tow guy in Ilwaco, back in the day, had outboards and a ton of military experience and he towed in...

Decent, Great report. I have noticed that more than a few times this year when I fired up the CATs to get moving we hooked up. The "bump" (putting in gear for a second to blow bait under boat out) has worked hundreds of times for us. There are very few boats sexier than a B31- I have no idea...

Mayday during WTC/DCC. Anyone know how it ended up?

Last Saturday I heard a boat call the CG and tell them they were taking on water around 46.20 x 125.05. We were crossing the CR bar, so too far away to do anything. A few minutes later a mayday went out and Cape D sent out 47' as we were passing the station. I am guessing it ended up OK, as I...

Tuna Tuna Tuna ready to go

It picked up today around the 125.23 west out of the CR. We got 23 with 5 guys fishing and Opportunaty was close to 100 with 3 guys (they stayed late and are running in in the dark). There are lots of fish in the Astoria Canyon right now and they are just starting to bite. Mike C

Its on. Tuna died out of the CR today.

They finally showed up today. A buddy got 44, 34 on the troll and 10 on iron, around the corners. Imagine what he could have done on bait. They are definitely within the reach of Westport, if your boat is not too slow, and an easy run from Ilwaco. Some were caught as close as the 124.36 W...

    2001 Luhrs 34C - Awsome Sportfisher!

Tailchaser, Good looking boat at a good price. Too bad you never got a sword on her. I disagree about a lower station. I have one on my Bertram and I never use it. With a full enclosure, I can't imagine running that boat from down below, as the visibility is so much better from the bridge...

Look for good surveyor in San Diego

I am making an offer on a late 80's Viking and if the deal goes through, I will need a good surveyor. I am coming from up north and don't know a soul in SD, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike C PS- If anyone has any info, good or bad, about a 48' Viking named "Magic"...

    NW "money" tuna tournament

Bold, The norm up north is around 22 lbs. It is more of a numbers game than a size game, as it is very rare to see an albacore over 30 lbs. Anyone headed up should contact the port of Ilwaco regarding guest moorage, but there should be plenty of slips. Fuel, livebait, and ice are all...

    NW "money" tuna tournament

If anyone wants an excuse to head north for NW albacore fishing, here it is. Looks like we are going to have our first "money" tuna tournament in the NW this year. Ilwaco is at the mouth of the Columbia river and features some unreal albacore fishing. Plenty of guest...

    2 Accurate Twinspin 30's. $550 each

I have two twinspin 30's in excellent condition. One has not been used since it was serviced by Accurate last year. The other has been used for albacore around 15 times since new. Great reels, just going with something cheaper, as my crew has donated two rods to neptune and I can't bear to...

I have two twin spin 30's that are in excellent shape and have been used around 10 times each. One was just serviced by Accurate and has not been used since it was serviced. These reels are bigger than I need, so I never use them. $600 each or might trade for some twinspin twelves. Mike C

Another thumbs up for Renegade Mike!

If anyone is thinking about fishing in Cabo, Mike is your man. I was down there for a couple of weeks on my own boat and had a tough time finding fish at first. Mike was kind enough to tell us what we were doing wrong and where to head. Thanks to him we got some good numbers of schoolie...

San Jose del Cabo Fish Report Dec. 17

Floatflyer, I was fishing for yellowfin on the pacifc side (just short of Jaime and out a little) and although we did not have sardinas, we got pretty good numbers on small clones. By accident, we discovered that the red and white 2 inch clone was the hot ticket and we were in double digits on...

    Mexico saftey put in perspective

Getoffmyback and the rest of you who won't come to Mexico, thank you. If it wasn't for people buying into the hype, I would't have been able to rent a brand new, three bedroom penthouse in Pedregal for the price of an average hotel room back home. My slip probably would not have been half...

    Mexico saftey put in perspective

I just ran across this xtranormal video that puts things in perspective. Gringo Gazette TV - Safety In Mexico Numbers don't lie. I spend 3-4 weeks a year fishing in Cabo and it has definitely changed since last time I was here. Everyone is more friendly and everything is cheaper. I think...

    Fishing with Dreamweaver

Mlcjj, Nice striper. Where were you guys at? We were 10 miles east of Jaime and ran into a big school of 15-45 lb yellowfin. Lots of biters until a swarm of boats showed up. As slow as marlin fishing has been, 5 hook ups is very, very good. Mike c

Tuna are still out there. 10/3 tuna report.

Mark, You must be paying more attention than me, as I had not noticed the lack of frayed fins. You are definitely on the money with that, as in years past I have seen a ton of frayed fins. We have caught good numbers this year, but have not been over 50 fish a trip since late July and early...

Tuna are still out there. 10/3 tuna report.

Went out of the CR on Saturday. Hitched a ride on a friend's 36' Yellowfin. Nothing like running out for tuna at 40 knots. Warm water everywhere and a flat ocean. Could never get fish going on livebait and caught 15 of our 19 fish on swimbaits. Scarab Chris was fishing his 36' Scarab on the...

Jailer and Tinman, Where were you guys at? I ran up north from Ilwaco to 46.30 x 124.42 and it was pretty dead so we trolled all the way back down along the .42 line to the 46.11. Never found good numbers and only got one fish to go on livebait. Very few people in double digits out of the...

The stripers have showed up in Cabo

After a few real long boat rides to the Iman and Gordo banks, we decided to stay close and just fish for marlin. The first few days were frustrating, as we watched Extraction and some other boats catch marlin while all we did was drowned bait. I was really frustrated, but Extraction told me...

Extraction, Thanks for the report. Good to hear that they are close by- I have watched marlin crash bait near there when I have stayed that Pueblo Bonito Pacifica (an incredible spa/hotel). Is it a livebait show like it is at the Gate? Last year was the first year out of my own boat and I...

    CR 8/27- who is fishing?

Martin, Swimbaits accounted for a little less than half our fish, which is pretty good, considering the more experienced guys were using livebait and the newbies were mainly using plastics. If you can find the anchovy pattern swimbaits, buy a bunch, as they are hot right now. Mike

Where to stay in Westport for tuna tourney

Chasin Tail, The shotgun shoots great, but it has been somewhat of a safe queen. It is the nicest gun I own and I am too afraid I am going to ding it up. I end up shooting my beat up Beretta O/U most of the time, but next time I go bird hunting, the red label is coming along. Mike

    Some live/dead bait questions

Chumming worked pretty good for us last year. Most days we plugged the boat (we try and stop at 30) on the first bait stop. A big part of keeping the stop going was throwing out crippled anchovies. Nothing beats watching tuna boiling 2 feet of your swimstep. Mike C

Wavedancer, You can never have too much bait aboard. Last year we went through almost all of our bait (two scoops) at the OTC on our way to a 57 fish day. This year we are bringing three scoops of livebait (40 gallon livewell) and a bunch of dead bait to chum with. Dead bait is easier to...

How do you cure live bait?

James, If you are buying your bait in Ilwaco, you should have no problem keeping it alive.
