Is a ring preferred to a small swivel, or is a swivel simply unnecessary? I make mine both ways and have yet to decide if the swivel helps.

I did fly fish but the places we fished would have required much longer casts than I was capable of; a spey fisherman might have been able to do it. I used pretty much the same tackle I used for fishing king salmon in rivers up here and caught fish on wobblers. For some reason, I had no strikes...

Only slightly off topic: If there is no bait to make at Hurricane Bank, why are the fish there? I know the crew can often take fliers at night at the Bank. Is that all there is?

Could it be the RP knot with 7 wraps down and 7 wraps up? John Collins does use the RP not, or at least he used to.

You bend the rod to apply pressure; that is, the rod bends before enough pull is put on the drag and line goes out. This effectively increases the pressure on the fish. When wahoo fishing, many people use a stupid tight drag so there is no need to bend the rod and the fish can be cranked...

I'm curious: How was the Boccaccio? I personally don't think much of them on the table. Silver Grays -- a very common rockfish in SE Alaska -- aren't especially tasty either.
