Blackfin tuna are a popular tuna for anglers all over who have access to their highspeed feeding frenzies and fun fights on lighter tackle. Capt. Rush Maltz of Odyssea Key West Sportfishing and Co-Host of the Local Knowledge fishing show shares his tactics, tackle and fishing gear to tap the schools of blackfin that roam his home waters of the Florida Keys and Key West.
“I like to keep it simple with a light spinning outfit and live bait. I black my wells out with live pilchards or similar bait and set up building life offshore of the reef. When the tuna find us, we free line live baits on Seaguar’s 40# fluorocarbon and a small 1/0 Mustad hook. This is a deadly combo for these speedy tuna.”
