Bryan Zulka from the El Gato Dos Sportfishing has been fishing the Tern paired up on the matching Valiant rod and offers his experiences to date. “On El Gato Dos we have been using the Terns, both 400 and 500 size since they were available and they have performed flawlessly on yellowfin tuna to 65-pounds, yellowtail to 39-pounds as well as being great on rockfish. On our 9′ jig rods, the 500 size casts much farther than any other reel we previously used and is now our go to for local yellowtail on the surface iron.
These reels are butter-smooth and make the ideal combo when paired with the Accurate Valiant rod. We chose the 7’6″ BV-X76MH, and loaded the reels with 65# braid to the top, which we prefer for early season rockfishing. In summer we will peel of some of the braid so we are casting and fishing mono above the braid. Another plus is that the factory rod clamp works great, even on deck hand style rods. The Valiant rods are light and we are not afraid of breaking them under the load of a large fish. These are surely to be a hit on local tuna this summer.”
