There are more than 40 million anglers in America, and according to the American Sportfishing Association, 25 percent of them are women. And, that number has consistently grown over the years. With that in mind, we at BDoutdoors.com thought it was high time we give the ladies some more exposure on the website. So, without further ado, we’re happy to announce our latest department, called Chicks Who Fish.
Each month we will interview a lady angler and get her take on what makes fishing so great. For our first installment, we spoke to Navina Jaensch, who lives and fishes in the Central Florida area.
Q: That’s an interesting name, where are you from?
A: I was born and raised in Baden-Baden, Germany, but have lived in Florida for the last 13 years.
Q: How long have you been fishing?
A: I started fishing about 10 years ago. My dad used to take my brother and I charter fishing on our vacations, but I really got into fishing more seriously about four years ago.
Q: OK, so who was it that really got you into fishing?
A: My best friends Billy and Matt. They asked me to fish a kingfish tournament with them. After that I was hooked.
Q: Where do you fish most?
A: Out of Port Canaveral, Florida.
Q: What do you love about fishing?
A: I love how relaxing it is — it’s just you and the water, and of course the people who you chose to go fishing with.
Q: What is the catch you are most proud of?
A: I would have to say my foul-hooked, 60-pound cobia just because it took so long to reel in and the whole time I thought I was going to lose the fish.
Q: Do you think women are better fishermen than men?
A: I think that women can be better anglers because they listen to what they are told, but in the end it’s all about how much time you put in. I think the more time you spend on the water the more experience you have.
Q: Ever think of buying a boat of your own?
A: Honestly, no! My dad always told me the best boat is your friend’s boat. Ha ha.
Q: Do you do any other water sports?
A: I don’t really do any other water sports, however I do love to hunt. I just bought my first bow this year and I have to say it’s one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.
Q: Wow, so you’re a true outdoors woman. Now that’s cool. To you, what is an ideal day on the water?
A: Honestly, good friends, calm seas and a boat load of fish!
