World Record Swordfish Caught In Five Minutes
Editor’s Note:The crew of the Bad Company just got to experience an epic fishing moment recently. Boat owner and angler Anthony Hsieh pitched a bait to a tailing sword and fought a quick epic battle to land it in under five minutes. Capt. Steve Lassley recaps the story for us below.
“We departed 7/11 on a 4-day trip. Our primary focus on this trip was a local swordfish for Anthony. When we are targeting a particular species we will drive past all kinds of game fish. On this particular trip those pesky 250-pound bluefin kept popping up. Finally on the second day of looking at them we decided to catch a few early in the day, we couldn’t take it anymore.
Anthony made the comment “If they get right in front of us we’ll bait them”. Well with just a little twist of the auto pilot control those darn things were right in front of us…. We weren’t disappointed as they piled on everything we cast at them including our swordfish outfits. We caught several and broke a few others off getting overly aggressive so we wouldn’t waste any time looking for Willy.
On the third day, Eliseo spotted a swordfish and when Anthony cast it immediately charged and inhaled the bait. After one feeble jump and 100-yard blistering run it started quartering towards the boat. I cut off the angle and intercepted the fish about 30-feet off it’s course line.
At that point Anthony pushed the drag up and had some serious heat on the fish, you can see the stutter steps and getting dragged around some, over 40#’s of drag with no harness. The fish does a couple switch backs and then makes a real bad move and we are on it. Eliseo creams it with a gaff I built just for swordfish. Nicknamed the 45, as in 45 caliber. After a couple hectic moments on the gaffs (4) we drug it in the boat. Game over. Under 5 minutes from bite to gaff.
We Cast baits at 4 swords for 1 bite.
Every time we go fishing we are practicing for that moment. Anthony and I have caught so many hundreds of marlin together we are kind of like one, he knows exactly what I’m going to do and I know what he’s going to do. The bulk of the marlin we get are in a couple minutes or less…..
Congratulations Anthony on a great fish! Let’s get some more…..”
