I’ve taken a little ribbing over the last seven years about my decision to stay covered up in the sun. But I’m not doing it for looks or approval, but more out of a fear of skin cancer. Now, if I have skin exposed to the harsh Florida sunshine, I feel like it’s burning a hole in me.
Now I’ve not just worn any old long sleeve shirt, one has to choose something cool or heat stroke will get you long before the cancer can. I’ve tried a variety of long sleeve technical shirts and have had varying success. I was convinced that LL Bean’s Tropic Wear shirts were the best until recently.
Now I have a new favorite shirt for hot weather. AFTCO Cumulus means protection from the sun and bugs!
AFTCO has produced a variety of performance shirts and technical woven shirts as they call it. I really do like the AFTCO Samurai and Ninja shirts as they have a hood of comfortable proportions and great for protection. I’ve found that the Samurai is also great for snorkeling, as the mask strap can be worn over the hood offering protection on one’s head and neck while facedown in the water.
But my new favorite fishing shirt is definitely the AFTCO Cumulus Long Sleeve Tech Shirt. These shirts are so breathable and lightweight that on my last trip, I found myself washing it in the shower each night so that I could wear it again the next day. Of course in the tropical sun, I favor the lightest colors so that the shirt reflects the solar blast instead of soaking up more heat. Of the colors available, light blue or white are the go to colors for me. White shows dirt pretty quick, so light blue wins.
The Cumulus shirt is vented in the back and offers a perfect cut for unrestricted movement for casting or gaffing. The pockets on the chest are zippered to make sure nothing falls into Davey Jone’s locker. I really like the snaps instead of buttons as they don’t snag the cast net as buttons will. They also built in a soft triangle of microfiber lens cleaning cloth in the shirt tail to give your glasses a quick wipe.
The AFLITE material blocks 98% of UV rays; much better than sunscreen.
Did I mention the bugs? The last few weeks we have been catching up on badly needed rainfall here in Central Florida, but the trade is the massive influx of mosquitos and no see ums (biting gnats). Long sleeves are essential, because bug spray isn’t cutting it.
Since the Cumulus shirt is not hooded like the Samurai shirt, I couple it with AFTCO’s latest Grouper Sun Mask. These new masks are stretchy and light weight with laser cut breathing holes which help reduce fogging in your sunglasses. This and a hat completes the full sun and bug protection required by our summer conditions. Of course long pants and socks and shoes are a must as well.
