BILL POOLE TOURNEY JULY 29-31
Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute's (HSWRI) Bill Poole Memorial Angling Tournament, in honor of legendary long-range fishing pioneer and sportsman Bill Poole, will kick off on Friday July 29 and run through Saturday July 30, with a gala awards barbeque and fundraiser the following day, Sunday July 31.
Proceeds from the contest go to furthering HSWRI's white sea bass stock replenishment program — the largest in the world. Since 1983, HSWRI has released more than 1.8 million juvenile white sea bass back into the ocean, ably fulfilling its mission to “return to the sea some measure of the benefits derived from it.” White sea bass populations were at critically low levels when the HSWRI program began. Today, thanks in part to HSWRI's efforts, the white sea bass fishery has staged a remarkable recovery and is considered vibrant.
Ingrid Poole, Bill's longtime spouse and now owner of the Qualifier Excel, is pleased with the new arrangement. “Bill was mindful of the ocean's limits from very early in his career,” she noted. “He encouraged his passengers to keep what they needed and leave the rest for another day. This is the perfect event to honor his legacy.”
This year's tournament will be expanded to include most major inshore and offshore species. Anglers will compete for a wide variety of awards in both senior and junior divisions. Special prizes will be given for any white sea bass captured alive and donated to HSWRI's broodstock program. As in previous years, this will be a family-oriented, non-money tournament designed to encourage sportsmanship and ocean awareness.
Those who don't choose to fish may still purchase tickets to attend the Awards Barbeque Banquet and Raffle/Auction on Sunday July 31 beginning at 11 a.m. The banquet — held at HSWRI's bayside headquarters — will feature delicious cultured fish tacos, prepared on site by local chefs, up close encounters with some of SeaWorld's exotic animals, guided tours of HSWRI's hatchery and breeding programs, and a deluxe opportunity drawing/auction sponsored by some of recreational fishing industry's top personalities and manufacturers.
Don Hansen, founder of Dana Wharf, will be receiving the Bill Poole Memorial Award, given each year to someone who has dedicated a lifetime to the outdoor sporting life. Jock Albright will be receiving the Milt Shedd Memorial Award, given to someone who has made a significant contribution to the white seabass program.
All proceeds from this event benefit HSWRI, a 501(c)-(3) non-profit organization and world leader in white sea bass stock replenishment. For more information contact Rick Maxa at 619-708-5077 or Karen Terra, (619) 226-3881 or firstname.lastname@example.org or visit www.hswri.org.
