Luck is a strange thing. It can go from bad to incredible in a heartbeat. (Then again, it can also go the other way.)
After losing his ass on a craps table during a Las Vegas getaway, Michael Medina, a 25-year-old production planner from Los Angeles got an email that would completely change his angling life.
The person emailing Michael was BD’s Brant Crenshaw who was trying to deliver some incredibly good news — Michael had just won the fishing trip of a lifetime as the big winner in BD’s Race to Prince Edward Island sweepstakes.
When Michael got back to California he finally saw the message and called back with very little time to spare. BD was about to forfeit Michael’s trip and give it to someone else.
“I wasn’t sure what the email was talking about,” Michael says. “I kind of brushed it off till I got back to L.A. That Tuesday I opened up the email and it said I needed to call or the prize would be forfeited. Luckily I called. If I had waited one more day I would’ve lost the trip.”
Michael has been on BD for several years now and says he likes to go on the forums to check out the calico bite and white sea bass action. His favorite spots to fish are the Southern California islands, where he goes each spring and early summer.
“When the calicos wake up, it’s always fun,” he says. “You never know what’s going to grab the end of the line as you’re picking away at ‘em.”
But Michael has never battled anything close to a giant tuna, which is exactly what he’ll be doing as he joins the BD crew in Prince Edward Island for the best bluefin tuna action in the Atlantic Ocean. You need to see the size of these giant tuna with your own eyes to truly believe it. Check out this Impact Zone photo gallery from BD’s 2011 PEI adventure.
Michael admits that he’s pretty green when it comes to offshore fishing. His biggest trip so far has been a two-day out of Southern California, but he’s eager to do more offshore fishing and has been planning to jump on a five-day for a while now. He’s never fished the East Coast, so his trip to P.E.I. is sure to open his eyes to the world of big-game stand-up fishing. As the big winner, Michael beat out tens of thousands of other entries.
“The biggest fish I’ve ever caught is probably a 40-pound white sea bass,” Michael says. “I definitely have my work cut out for me. This is bigger than anything I’ve ever done. I’ve got to start lifting weights.”
The prize package includes three days of fishing with bluefin tuna pro Tony McDonald from Tony’s Tuna Fishing, airfare and transfers from all accommodations, meals, tips, tackle and fishing expenses. Michael will also get to fish with the best possible gear on the market today, including a custom-built fishing rod by Salty Dawg made on a United Composites blank and featuring the best AFTCO guides and butt on the market. Michael will also be using a brand-new Okuma Makaira two-speed reel, Seaguar fluorocarbon, Mustad hooks and Costa sunglasses.
While Michael might not be up to the task of battling these giant tuna, his gear surely will. And with the coaching from BD’s team and Captain Tony, we’re sure Michael will do just fine.
“I still can’t believe it,” Michael says. “It won’t sink in until I step on the boat. I felt lucky when I was in Vegas, but I lost big on the crap tables. All my good luck came through Bloodydecks!”
