If you need an affordable saltwater reel that packs enough punch to get just about any species back to the boat, check out the PENN Defiance. Although it’s light on the wallet, PENN didn’t go cheap on this reel. This conventional reel sports a sticker price of only $79.95 and features a graphite frame and sideplates along with a forged, machined and anodized aluminum spool that cuts down on weight.
Defiance is built with stainless steel frame rings and uses a level wind so your line lays on the spool evenly. The reel features a machine-cut, marine-grade bronze main gear with hardened stainless steel pinion and HT-100 carbon-fiber drag washers. Four shielded stainless steel bearings with instant anti-reverse give the reel a smooth operation. The spool sports three easy to see line capacity rings so you can take inventory on the amount of remaining line and a large knob on the handle provides comfortable retrieves.
Defiance is also available in an economic combination package matched with a PENN one-piece tubular glass rod with solid tip, plated stainless steel guides and graphite reel seat starting at $109.99.
Defiance is available in four models, each with 15 pounds of maximum drag. Model DFN20LW weighs 17.8 ounces with a gear ratio of 4.3:1. The 18.8-ounce DFN25LW has a gear ratio of 4.3:1, and the high-speed 6.0:1 DFN30 weighs 19.3 ounces and retrieves 39 inches of line per turn. Model DFN40LW weighs 21.6 ounces, has a gear ratio of 3.6:1 and retrieves 26 inches of line on each crank. The 30 and 40 LW retail for $89.95.
